ME: Looks like the Amazon deal is off.
Co-worker: No, the Governor wants it, it will happen.
Me: Not if the company pulls out.
Co-worker: They won't just a bargaining tactic.
And he was so smug about it.
Cubical Mate: Amazon pulled out!
Me: Send me the link! So I can to tell GT...who smugly told me it will go through.
(sends me the link)
Me to Co-worker aka GT: Turns out I was right!
GT: We shall see.
Mother: Looks like Amazon pulled out.
Me: GT doesn't believe it.
Mother: No, they definitely have. They got surprised by the negative response from the community and don't want that. So decided to just build their presence in NYC through other avenues, while putting their headquarters only in Virgina and Nashville without hunting a replacement for NYC.
Very happy about this. Having high tech jobs coming to Long Island City, Queens is not a good thing. That's about 25,000 more commuters coming into a very crowded city that already has 85,000 people commuting into it daily, with over 12 Million residents. And we do not have the infrastructure to support it. Also it would push for less affordable housing, jack up rents, jack up the cost of living (which just no) and not provide jobs for the people already there. Hence the reason that people were actively protesting the idea.
Take that Mr. Mayor and Mr. Governor -- it was, by the way, the only thing they've both agreed on.
Amazon was smart -- since I'm a huge user of Amazon and I was considering discontinuing if they moved here.
2. Blackface and comedy..
Has anyone seen Hannah Gadsby's Nanette ? Go see it if you can. It sort of addresses why this type of comedy is harmful to our societal soul.
Then when you've finished? Watch S1 and S2 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maizel who looks at it from another perspective and addresses the historical complexity of the painful nature of comedy.
Comedy by it's very nature tends to be offensive and painful. The funnier the joke, the more likely it is to be painful to someone. I have to say that when I make fun of things -- I do it to stave off pain. It is a defense mechanism. My sardonic wit is my way of handling the world around me. If I don't take it too seriously? It can't hurt me. I call the President the Doofus. Life is absurd. The Universe has a wicked sense of humor.
That said, comedy can also further racist tropes, homophobic mindsets, and sexist fallacies. It can lead to violence and discrimination. It's good to be mindful of the situation. I think what Hannah Gadsby was trying to convey was "mindfulness" and "empathy" was lacking in a lot of comedy. That comedy used in the wrong way can build a wall instead of a bridge into another's point of view. We're supposed to laugh with not at.
Blackface regardless of the intent, demeans another race, one far less privileged than the one putting on the black face. It's not all that different than a skinny person wearing a fat suit for Halloween. If the intent is to demean, then there is a problem with the comedy.
Demeaning comedy or embarrassment humor -- often insult humor, a lot of slapstick, and parody doesn't work for me. It makes me cringe. Sexist jokes are a constant in the workplaces that I've been in and yes they make me uncomfortable. But one learns over time how to respond -- which is either to ignore the person, or make a very snarky witty reply in response.
Me: Can't throw a ball to save my life.
Co-worker: So you throw like a girl?
Me: No actually more like a boy from what I've been seeing of your catch sessions. Kathy is by far the best, and she's a girl.
I've learned how to ream with a one-liner.
This does not work with Lando. He and I will go four rounds much to the amusement and at times aggravation of our co-workers. I've learned to ignore him and not take it seriously.
Co-worker (looking at resume I have) Watch it Looks like a terrorist
ME: Watch it, your prejudice is showing. Might want to reign it in, before anyone sees.
He didn't much appreciate my comment.
Time has made me less tolerant of certain things and more tolerant of others.
3. Saw the doctor today. Got up at 5. Was actually up at 4:27. Anxiety gives one loads of energy. And getting to and from Doctor's appointments after work tends to cause anxiety. This one was scheduled at 3. The earliest train I could take was 2:14. I have to take a train, walk ten minutes, get on a subway, go two stops, then walk 15-20 minutes. I think I did it in 10. The train was not fast. It got in at 2:35. The subway -- left at 2:54. I barely got there in time. But hey, no waiting.
They saw me immediately!
Doctor told me to eliminate cheese from my diet. Also reduce rice as much as possible and pull back on sugars. She said the problem with being gluten-intolerant was the gluten-substitutes have a high rice and suger content, and rice turns to sugar in the system. It's fermenting and causing an overgrowth in the stomach.
Resulting in other symptoms. She suggested that I get rid of cheese -- which causes constipation and the rice as much as possible, nothing else for now. The other problem with the cheese is it was causing high cholestrol in one area and low in another.
In addition take Senna tea to clean out my system.
Interesting. I like this new doctor. Much smarter than the last one. And easier to get to. (Believe it or not.) She's about 45 minutes from work and 30 minutes from home.
Also, apparently work is causing my blood pressure to spike -- specifically? My boss. I need to find a way of dealing with that. She said the meds were working though. To walk more (I already walk about a mile to two miles a day) and to scale back on carbs, sugars, and eliminate cheese. Also to learn not to let external things affect me. To focus on my breathing when they do. I told her that I was using the Headspace app, she said she was using it too.
Also saw the PT, who I've mixed feelings about. I liked his boss better, but he's not around. So, I'm coping.

Date: 2019-02-16 01:50 am (UTC)Arlington isn't as congested, doesn't have over 5 Million living there already, etc.
I know the area they were planning to put Amazon in Long Island City area of Queens, and it made no logistical sense.
Co-worker (GT) and I had lengthy discussion about again today -- he believes the reason it fell through is not enough of the right palms were greased. He believes our government is corrupt as they come. (I don't know he might be right.)
