1. Ah perimenupause...the gift that keeps on giving. Bloody tired of peri-menupause.(Been suffering from it for about ten to fifteen years now.)
Let's face it - I'm well past child-bearing years, bring on the menupause already.

If you too suffer from hot flashes, a nifty tip? A cold pack on your diaphragm or the center of your chest just below the neck -- takes care of it in minutes. My Aunt gave me the idea.

2. My niece is taking a red-cross life-saving course and going to start teaching swimming. Apparently the pool at her school is also open to the public to use. (Honestly don't know when she'll find the time -- she's taking advanced courses and has a lot of homework.)

Niece and brother are with parents at the moment. On the way down, my fourteen year old niece was stopped by the TSA and patted down twice and rather invasively, and taken to the side, because they'd found explosive substance on her hands. (It was from the chemicals in her hand cream...so be careful of hand creams.)

3. Reading meme?

Currently Reading

I've decided the romance novel I'm currently reading is meant as a parable. Either that or it's so bad it's good - and I can't put it down. (Have you read a really bad written book, but it's so outrageous and funny that you can't stop? And it's just fun? I'm giggling on the train.) It's exaggerated in so many ways. Also, every once and a while the writer pauses to inform us what the people are wearing -- which is rather bland. "She was wearing a tan skirt and suit, with a very chic scarf" and I'm thinking, okay, I wouldn't be caught dead in that. What is it with romance novels and descriptions of clothing? (And by the way the historicals are better at it.)

In addition ...the heroine manages to survive three full days of labor, barely, flatlines for 2 minutes and 44 seconds, and the baby almost dies. Uhm...

Mother: Yes, that's apparently possible.
Me: Really???

The heroine's parents die in a plane crash. So she decides she has to immediately fly home to help the Genie with the arrangements. (Yes, it's an actual "Genie" as in Aladdin.). She's living with the hero. Does she tell him? Well...she calls his office, but apparently his secretary is gone for the day or days and there's no receptionist or anyone to leave messages with or voice mail. (Which is odd. Considering he's head of a multi-million dollar company or billion dollar company.)
And she calls his mother, but no one can take a message and again no answering machine -- so she relies on his sister, who hates her guts? Then his brother pops up, who also hates his guts, and she leaves a note with the brother to tell him where she's gone. After the funeral, she mopes for months, escaping into books -- because he hasn't called. (She didn't leave him a number to reach her and her's is unlisted.) She finally figures out this is a problem and flies back to London to see him -- and instead runs into the venomous sister who tells her that he is dead. And, she believes the sister without checking further? Really?

Prior to this -- her relationship with the guy consists of sex and eating. He's at work all the time. Insists she give up her job and move in. She gives it up and tries to find one in London, all the while she has a mortgage to pay and credit card bills stacking up from expensive shopping trips. He's under the impression she's insanely wealthy from the way she looks and holds herself. So he doesn't know she's in debt and she doesn't tell him -- even though she's moved in with him.

They don't exchange numbers. Nor does she go to his office to inform him that she has to leave the country for a funeral.

I'm laughing my head off at the absurdity of the plot. This is either a parody of a romance novel or the writer doesn't subscribe to earth logic.

Then, when she comes back into the hero's life, he's convinced she left him in the lurch and rejected him -- only to find out that she nearly died having his kid, is in financial arrears, and is in physical pain. It's pure melodrama. No that's an understatement. What it is -- is a magical Genie's take on a romance novel. Note to self -- if you ever meet a genie? Do not make ANY wishes. Particularly any regarding romantic heroes...metaphors are entirely lost on Genies.

What I finished reading?

This weird mercenary/scientist sci-fi novel that was selected by the Smart Bitches Book Club...and..well..it's bad. Really bad. Boring. And not fun. I was rather disappointed by it.

What I plan on reading next

Either "What the Parrot Saw" - see last post. Or "Where the Crawdads Sing" -- also see last post.

O.o to the handcream thing. I'm not sure what's more worrying, that TSA is so over aggressive or that hand cream has content similar to explosives.

I feel lucky about my peri. It's been going on for less time and so far no hot flashes. But it's good to have that tip.

Also, looks like we have still more to look forward to:
https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20190311/17502341774/foia-documents-detail-dhs-cbps-rules-free-rollout-biometric-scanning-program.shtml

The push is on to implement biometric screening at major US airports. The DHS has been pushing this for awhile, telling concerned travelers all they need to do to opt out is not travel. The pilot programs don't seem to have produced anything in the way of actionable results, but the administration's insistence that the US is surrounded by terrorists has dropped a lead foot on the DHS's gas pedal, resulting in an accelerated process that ignores both concerns about biometric scanning tech and the concerns of the traveling public that will be subjected to it.
