Me: Been wrestling with office equipment all day and project managers. They are winning. So I'm going home to watch some carnage on Game of Thrones.
Finally saw Game of Thrones, The Long Night, Episode 8.3. It surprised me. I knew there was about three - four different ways it could go down. And while it did pick one of them, and for the most part followed as I'd predicted, the last fifteen or twenty so minutes surprised me.
Okay, first of all, wasn't at all surprised by whom they killed off. Or who lived.
I knew the main characters would survive. Although it was a tad surprising Brienne made it -- I honestly thought they were going to kill her off -- but I guess not?
Jamie also apparently made it through -- which I suspected. (I still think Ayra may kill him and use his face to kill Cersei. That's what I'd do if I were writing this.)
Not at all surprised about Dany, Sansa, Tyrion, Jon, Bran, Davos, Ayra, The Hound, and the Dragons.
And we all pretty much predicted that the Mormounts - Lyanna and Jorah were goners.
So too, Eddis, Gendry (at least I think he's dead, not quite certain), the Giant Killer (who loved Brienne), Berric (at least I think he's dead), Melissandra, Samwell's wife and kid (pretty sure I saw them die), Greyworm and all the Unsullied and Draquai (sp?) - Dany's army, and I think the translator (hard to tell). Varys is still alive - but I knew he would be, as is Jamie Lannister (at least I think he's alive). Theon died -- but we knew that was happening.
Everything went down much as I expected -- the surprise was Ayra killing the Night King. That I did not foresee. I should have. But they did a really good job of misleading me to think the Night King would either succeed or Jon would take him out. I knew Dany wouldn't -- too easy.
The scenes with Ayra were by far the best in the episode. From her cat and mouse game with the Walking Dead in Winterfell to her scenes with Melissandra, and finally her take down of the Night King. Well down and it tracked beautifully with her character arc -- she may well have the best character arc in the series.
The other character with the best scenes was Tyrion in the crypt. His scenes with Sansa were a stroke of brilliance.
I honestly thought Dany was the weak link here...but that's just me. I did love the scenes with the dragons. Jon and his dragon fighting the Night King and his dragon was beautiful. Then the Night King showing how utterly unbeatable he appeared to be -- when he survived dragon fire and was able to awake all of the dead. (Yes, hiding in a crypt seemed like a good idea at the time, I guess. But when your enemy is a necromancer -- possibly not? I'd have sent the women and children twenty miles away from Winterfell (just saying).
Suffice it to say -- if it weren't for Ayra? They'd be dead. And Dany breaking with the plan to save her people -- sort of put them in jeopardy. I honestly think Jon may be the better leader.
While I found most of the fight scenes difficult to follow, it was hard to tell who was getting killed half the time. I honestly don't know if Jamie made it, I think he did? OR if Brienne made it? It was hard to tell. There were some wonderful moments -- most were inside Winterfell itself. Also some lovely bits with the dragons.
And...
Those last twenty minutes were a work of art --- from the sequences of the individual fighting to Ayra's take down of the Night King, to Melissandra's silent walk into the frozen waste land, where she shudders and dies. Beautifully filmed.
Much better than expected. Did not disappoint.
ETA: I found something that tells us who died in the last episode.

Apparently Ghost did make it out alive. Berric did die, as did Theon, Melissandra, Eddis, Lyanna, and Jorah.
Also, various bits were foreshadowed previously. And yep, I'm right -- Ayra is going to kill Cersei. She kills blue eyes, green eyes, and brown eyes. The blue eyes are the White Walkers. Cersei has green eyes. The brown were the guys who did the Red Wedding.

Date: 2019-04-30 01:55 pm (UTC)Some of those you think dead are still alive, I'm pretty sure: Tormund, Gendry, Greyworm, Missandei, Gilly, and little Sam are all still alive (I think). Yes, Jaime is still alive.
I really liked the episode, and you hit on the 2 main reasons: Arya and the scenes with Sansa and Tyrion (though I don't ship them and think putting them together would be bad).

Date: 2019-04-30 02:11 pm (UTC)Yeah, I watched it on HBO Now as well -- the streaming version. But while I could see everything, I couldn't figure out who got killed. Went online - and yep, weirdly, Tormund, Gendry, Greyworm, Missandei, Gilly and little Sam survived. (They should have been killed. For such a huge battle they didn't kill that many of the main characters or main supporting characters.)
I knew the major ones would make it -- because hello, three more episodes.
Arya and the scenes with Sansa and Tyrion (though I don't ship them and think putting them together would be bad).
Sansa and Tyrion won't work together -- for well the reasons Sansa stated, they have opposing agendas. Both want power. She wants it with Jon, and he wants it with Dany. They are only united in their desire to defeat the Night King and Cersei. (Also, I'm willing to predict that Tyrion doesn't make it to the end. And Jon sits the Iron Throne.)
I don't ship any of the romantic relationships on GOT. Gave up on that ages ago. ;-)
I don't think Jon and Dany will work either - for the same reasons, Dany wants power, Jon doesn't really care but the people following him want him to take it. (which means Jon should have it.)

Date: 2019-04-30 04:57 pm (UTC)Gilly and Sam may actually be safe. Mainly because the writers like them and don't want to kill them. Also their deaths don't further plot, really. If they were to die -- it would have been in this week's episode, the Long Night. At this point, I just don't see them in danger any longer.
I honestly thought they'd kill off all the non-essentials at this point. I don't know how Grey-worm made it out or Brienne or Tormund or Sam or Gilly...but (shrug). The one's they killed -- I knew were dead. No way Theon and Jorah were making it out alive. Surprised Gendry did -- but that may have to do with his claim on the throne? Brienne also surprised me, as did Tormund.
My list was:
Sam's family Missandra Grey worm Brienne Tormund Jorah (definite) Theon and his army (definite) Eddis (definite) Melissandra (who I forgot about frankly but when she showed up, yep) Gendry Lyanna (definite) 90% of the Unsullied Army, and all of the Drofaci (sp?) I also figured most of the people in the crypt except for Sansa and Tyrion would die...
The writers of the television series aren't as bloodthirsty as GRR Martin or me for that matter. LOL!

Melissandre said -- "blue eyes, brown eyes, green eyes - you'll kill them all", and how Arya killed the guys from the Red Wedding (whose names I've completely spaced). Ayra will kill Jaime and take his face, then kill Cersei -- and we won't know until she rips off Jaime's face.
