Jun. 29th, 2019 05:16 pm1. So, I've been watching Songland -- a reality show competition, where various song-writers pitch their songs to a popular performing artist, who then chooses that song to record on their album.
It's pretty good, albeit frustrating in places -- because often the artists will remaster or re-write the song in its entirety to fit a specific artist.
There was this song that Remmi performs for the Jonas brothers, which has a really haunting lyric:
"But now you are a soft light, you are flickering on in the back of my mind...
and now I'm in love but I still dream of you every once in a while..all I want is another chance to let you go.."
Really cool lyric. And what do they do? They remove it, rewrite and focus on the really boring lyric:
"I don't want to be alone tonight, I don't want to be alone tonight.." which I find jarring and I'd have gotten rid of.
But they went with what they related to and was "Safe".
"I don't want to be alone tonight -- I don't want to be alone at night" -- isn't that interesting and has been sung.
This is my problem with a lot of pop music, country, rap -- so much of it is repetitive or the same. I was also reminded of why I don't like the Jonas Brothers.
They're boring.
A good song should take you by surprise.
Here's the remastered version Do You Think of Me -- which isn't original at all and sounds like an Imagine Dragons song.
Very annoyed. I may hunt Remmi up and get the original of that song, and ignore everyone else.
I shared the above with mother over the phone.
Mother: I feel so out of sync, I don't the know names of any musicians, movie stars, etc.
Me: Well, you aren't missing much.
Mother: I used to know them, but all the artists from my generation are dead now, well the ones I liked or I've forgotten them.
Me: This was a song for the Jonas Brothers -- not sure but I think you've heard of them?
Mother: Oh I have. I don't like them.
Me: Neither do I, and Songland did not change that impression at all. Did really love this female singer though -- she had a great song that they completely ruined.
2. Scary ass ten minute storm flew by. Okay, when did NYC become part of the tropics? It blew a bunch of tree limbs off the roof and almost into my window. Then poured. Lightened, thundered. And now it's sunny again. I'm wondering if this is why I'm irritable. Either that or the gazapacho soup I got from Whole Foods is not agreeing with me. Possible, it's heavy on tomato and I need to stay away from nightshades.
3. I vented about doing laundry on Facebook in my usual snarky way and got attacked by my cousin. (Who I've never seen and have no idea what she looks like, or heard her voice.) So I called my mother to vent about my father's siblings kids.
Mother: What did you say?
Me: Pretty much the same vent I gave you which you thought was funny. How I tried to laundry in the basement of my apartment building on a hot day. That there were these families with kids doing it -- who should be at the beach and have all week. And a few appear to be just hanging out down in the hot basement playing for no reason whatsoever, taking up space. There's a park nearby. And a beach not that far away.
Plus we have two people, two siberian huskies, a kid, a live-in sister, a surf board and two bikes, and the people are about 6 foot each..in a one-bedroom apartment that is 750 sq feet, they also have an SUV. What the heck.
Mother: And what did the cousin say?
Me: How I should open my heart to these people, and have no idea what they are going through.
Mother: Okay, I've met your cousin twice in my life, once as a small child then as an adult. She's projecting her ideology onto you. She lives in a nice house, with a huge pool, has two kids, a housekeeper, and chose to give up her denistry practice so hubby is supporting her full time. She also has her own washer and dryer. She's liberal -- so probably projecting and has no understanding of your situation at all.
ME: Ugh. Spoiled rich brat -- should open her heart to her cousin.
Mother: What did you do?
Me: I deleted the post. My problem with FB is the pesky family members who I wouldn't know if they passed me on the street and I don't like all that much. I deleted the post, because I know me, if I left it up -- I'd eventually rip her a new one, and that's never a good thing. (Particularly since the rest of her family is on FB with me.)
Mother: How do you delete posts on FB? I can't figure out how to do that.
Me: It's really easy, although defriending is a challenge -- I couldn't figure out how to get rid of her, so gave up.
My misanthropy continues. I may need another day to dispel it from my system. (Note to self -- stay off FB.)

Date: 2019-06-29 11:39 pm (UTC)I can sympathize with your mom. I find that I know very few people in music anymore -- I mean, even the Jonas Brothers are, what, 10-15 years old as a group?
We have our own laundry room these days but for years I had to use one in an apartment complex (which in itself was more convenient than having to go to a laundromat, which I had to do a few times when dryers weren't working). That situation sounds really annoying for you and I share your puzzlement. A basement laundry room would definitely not be my choice of a place to hang out. Maybe a well lit one during winter but that's about it.

Apparently they are making a comeback or getting back together? And one of them has married Sophie Turner (the GoT and Dark Phoenix actress).
But yeah, they were a boy band back in the early 00s? I think. Or 90s?
I can't keep track of people in the music world any longer either. I sort of stopped trying after about 2008. So all the new bands? I've no clue who they are. Songland isn't really featuring them though -- it's been John Legend (from Jesus Christ Superstar - the television version done about a year or so ago), Megan Trainor (all about that bass), w.i.llam from the Black Eyed Peas (1990s and early 00s band), Kelly Ballerina (who I do not know and have never heard of -- she's apparently a pop country star, hence the lack of knowledge), and the Jonas Brothers (whose music I haven't exactly listened to either.)

Will state that I much prefer the basement laundry than lugging my laundry down three flights of steps and three blocks to a laundramat. I also got in the habit of having them do it -- except for the delicates. (I'd lug it there and they'd wash it. I did delivery option once or twice, but not fond of it.) Now that the delicates are becoming half of my wardrobe (everything has to be cleaned on gentle wash or cold gentle wash and dried on PP or low), I'm not sure I could have someone else do it.
While to be fair -- the basement laundry is nicer than you'd expect, it has books, it has toys, it has a scooter, and it has seating (not comfortable seating) -- put there for the people who come down to do laundry with kids -- the place to play with toys and things is a small corner of the room, slightly back from the machines -- again intended to get the kids from being underfoot.
And this works fine if the parent is only down there with the kid to do laundry. It doesn't work if they are there to play, laundry be dammed and other people are trying to do laundry around them -- and they are taking up the chairs and space. Also one of the kids in question had no intention of sticking to the play area, and had decided to play with the scooter in front of the machines. LOL! I'm like -- people? Go to the park. It's cooler. Hello. Plus exercise!

Date: 2019-06-30 04:38 pm (UTC)Good to know. Thank you.
I deleted to keep myself from responding and making it worse. (Been there, done that, one too many times.) The trick is to ignore and not respond at all. Which is what I did on Good Reads. Responding to negative comments is sort of like feeding the energy or the trolls. Always better to walk away from a pointless fight.
