Jul. 28th, 2019 09:39 pm1. Character deaths in soaps and comics..
Soap fan Poster: They can't kill the character off. That would be a huge mistake. Twitter would go crazy.
ME: Why would that stop them? Twitter goes crazy on a daily basis. And soap opera writers (heck television writers) are notoriously and annoyingly blood thirsty. (They just killed off a REALLY popular character on Veronica Mars and fans went nuts on Twitter.)
Poster: True. The Walking Dead does it all the time.
Me: At least with a soap there is an outside chance the character will be brought back from the dead in the not too distant future. (Heck if they could bring back a child who was killed in a hit and run, and whose kidney was donated to another character...anything is possible.)
Comic book poster: I can't believe they killed off my favorite characters.
Me: Well, I wouldn't worry too much about it, the next writer will most likely undo it.
Comic book poster: They shouldn't have killed off your fav's instead.
Me: They already did. More than once. It's gotten a bit old, actually. They killed them off, brought them back, about four or five times now. Yours have only been killed off once or twice...to date, this is just the third time.
Comic book poster: They shouldn't kill them at all.
Me: Well it would help if they didn't keep bringing them back constantly...should be some permanence to it. Is there a character that hasn't been killed off and brought back?
Crickets.
I'm sorry I can't get all that upset about television and comic serials killing off characters. The writers do it too often. The shock value has worn off. Also the fact that daytime soaps and comic book writers are notorious for bringing characters back from the dead -- can be rather comforting.
2. Ten Things I'd say yes too...
Hmmm, right now I don't feel like saying yes to much of anything. I can however think of several things I'd say no to.
I am admittedly moody. So this attitude is bound to change at some point.
3. Back to work tomorrow. I want another day. I'm barely making headway in finishing my novel. Beginning to think I should stop -- but the characters keep talking to me, so no.
Also want more sleep and more time to be lazy.
Don't we all.
It's at least really quiet at the moment. One of the many things I love about this apartment is how quiet it usually is. I don't hear traffic. Or really much of anything outside of my air purifyers and own appliances. It's quieter than most houses I've been in. I found my friend's house very creaky and noisy.
ETA: Just realized today was the scheduled beach day/party by the woman from my church. Eh, no. I couldn't have done it. I really needed a day to just chill and be away from people. Also it was hot today -- in the upper 80s and low 90s. And humid.
Not much of a beach person to begin with. I love walking them. Hanging out on them - on a towel, in a bathing suit, with lots of people -- not my thing. Sand. I don't like sand. It gets in everything.
4. Finished the first six or so episodes of "The Good Fight" S1, so all caught up now. (Watching it on CBS, not CBS All Access.) I'm guessing it gets better in later seasons? Because the first season is annoyingly all about the Ponzi scheme. This aired around the time of the Bernie Madoff scandal.
It has moments of brilliance. Elspeth is good whenever she's featured. And Matthew Perry makes a good villain. (He has not aged well. Very jowly. Of the "Friends" cast, he's aged the least well.)
But, it's not worth subscribing to CBS All Access to see the rest of it.
I'm not sure how the Europeans are seeing these shows? Maybe the same way we're seeing your shows? A lot of European series pop up on Netflix or Amazon, with a few on BBC America, AMC, or PBS. BBC America and AMC get the best of the British stuff, as does Netflix. PBS is seriously lagging in that department (they don't have the money).
The US has one too many subscription streaming services for its own good. I can't keep track of them. There's at least 50 the last time I checked. And more being added daily. Also services that contain them, such as Amazon Fire and Roku.
It's all very confusing.
And the channels almost have too much content. You wouldn't think this would be a problem, but alas it is. It's impossible to find things on these services, and you only find easily whatever it is they decide to rec or advertise to you based on previous shows you've viewed. So, for example? If you went on a bit of an Anime binge, like I did last year, you will suddenly get nothing but anime suggestions. To find anything else -- you have to search for it.
The other problem? They have a tendency to cancel or remove content without warning.
So one day, the 100 might be available, the next it won't. Or movies like Iron Man, then they are removed.
Buffy also might be available one year, but the next its not. Highly unreliable service.
Is this true of the European services as well? And how about elsewhere?

Date: 2019-07-30 11:07 pm (UTC)And the publishing industry is tough. But I'm willing to fling myself against the brick wall at least a bit. (grin)
