1. The national news has become a constant irritant. I can't watch it, I can barely read it. I can't talk about it. There's no good news that I can see. It's frigging depressing, when it's not enraging.

On Twitter...the X-men fandom was having fun with the following complaint:

X-Men Daily!
[profile] letsxmen
Someone in my mentions said X-Men Red is too SJW. I am like literally..They have been that for their entire existence since the time they were created. they fight for Social Justice. Their stories are about fighting for and protecting a society that hates and fears them.

Well, yes. It's impossible to be an X-men fan and not be liberal and into human rights and social justice. That's pretty much the whole point of the X-men.

And let me think...what would I rather be? A SJW or a bigot? Hmmm...decisions, decisions.

2. Feeling sick today. Stupid IBS -- hit me with gastritis from hell around 1 am in the morning. Woke me up and everything. And I was enjoying my sleep. Then followed by a bit of a vertigo headache. I managed to swallow two gasx, drink a package of miralax, and take advil/decognestant. All of which worked to relieve my symptoms by about 3AM. So I slept about three to four hours.

Was a nifty wake up call. I'm now officially off cheese, and all grains. Also nightshades. Sugar. Chocolate. Alcohol. I'll do fruit, just nothing that has added sugars like well baked goods, chocolate, candy, etc.

I'm going to eliminate things...and see if I can heal the gut and get past the IBS.
The only thing that worked with IBS in the past was going off all of this stuff and going paeolo.

Meditated on my resistance to the diet today...and how to accept it, and why I was resisting it. It's fear mostly, and grief. Fear -- because society isn't understanding of dietary problems and restrictions, and rather judgemental. I have nightmares about not finding anything to eat - going to a restaurant or a party or an event, and there being absolutely nothing available for me to eat. (And no bringing food with me everywhere I go is NOT a viable option.)

You would not believe how carb and bread based our society truly is, also sugars. Grains and sugars are in practically everything...it's easier going off dairy actually.

I can substitute almond flour and coconut flour, but they tend to be more expensive.
But admittedly more available then in the past.

Anyhow, I've no choice, have to give this stuff up or kill my digestive system.
So, I did it before, will do it again. It is easier now than it was previously. Because there's a lot of other people on similar diets -- Keto, Paeolo, etc. I just have to get past the fear, denial and grief and move on to acceptance.

3. Well, the gas situation in my apartment complex is moving forward. They are testing each floor and the apartments on each of the floors for gas leaks. So far most of the sixth floor had them, the basement, and a couple on the fifth and fourth floors. So this is going to be an extensive job to replace and repair.

But, on the plus side they bought four new electric dryers which take $1.50 and 55 minutes to dry. (Gas doesn't take as long as electric, apparently.) And the hot water situation is fixed. It's just the gas stove and oven that are out. (And well, the heat doesn't work...so this does have to be fixed before November. Which is why they are hurrying along. I actually feel sorry for them. It's not their fault these leaks happened.)

Super's wife called to ask if they could have access to my apartment tomorrow to check -- and I said of course they could. They have a key. And they've worked in my apartment before when I wasn't here. It's impossible for me to take work off for it.
So this works best. And I'm not worried about them stealing anything. I trust them.
Like I said, they did it before now.

4. I'm reading two interesting books at the moment.

* The Mighty Thor: Thunder in Her Viens (Thor 2015- 2018) -- which is by Jason Aaron, and is a graphic novel. It's about Jane Foster picking up the mantel of Thor, while battling breast cancer. Thor himself is nowhere to be found. Odin (who is still alive in the comics) has imprisoned his wife (also still alive in the comics) and has a warrant out for (female) Thor's arrest or the false Thor. Because heaven forbid there be a female Thor. (He doesn't know it is Dr. Jane Foster -- who is also a Senator in Asgard.) She looks nothing like Thor. She is bald and withered and fighting breast cancer. As Thor, she's muscular, blond, and amazing. Also every time she becomes Thor she undoes all the chemotherapy -- because the hammer rids her body of all poison, except of course Cancer, which it considers a part of her.

Loki in this version has joined the Dark Elf Council -- and has agreed to kill (female) Thor. Loki is a bad boy again, with insane Daddy issues. His father, a Frost Giant, who was presumed dead but isn't -- is not pleased with Loki. He abandoned Loki. Loki traveled through time to try to kill him -- after he was battle wounded, so he considered that cowardly -- not that he tried to kill him, that he was proud of, Frost Giants do that, but how Loki went about it. They are trying to bond, or rather Loki is...

The battle is the beginning of The War of the Realms, with the Dark Elves killing the Elves of Light in Alflam. There's a lot of fantasy mythology and established world building -- that I didn't know about and am figuring out as I go. (Because I really don't want to spend lots of money and time, reading and getting all the back issues. Or for that matter wading through them. It's not that hard to figure out -- I'm good at doing it and find it to be fun. It's one of the many things I love about convoluted serial plot lines -- is jumping in the middle of it and figuring it out.)

Anyhow, the art...omg, the art is amazing. I'm impressed. It takes a lot to impress me in regards to art. Russell Dautman is the artist. And he deftly shows the differences of each realm and world and creature. Also this has got to be the best drawn Loki that I've seen -- and I've seen a lot of them. Including Alan Davis' version in the 1980s.

I'm enthralled. This one is free via comixcology, the other volumes may not be. (They like to sucker you in, the bastards.)

* We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix which as previously reported, I scored for $1.99 via the Kindle Daily Deal.

(I get my book recommendations from DW (in this case Smart Bitches) and Good Reads, like everyone else.)

This is about a heavy metal band that broke up badly, and one of the lead guitarists, Kris, who bottomed out...is trying to bring the band back together again to seek vengeance against her ex-partner who stole her music, her songs, her hard work to make it big.

It goes into detail about heavy metal bands, tours, playing the steel string guitar and how it can make your fingers bleed. One of the better fictional novels that I've read about the music business and playing music. (Not that I've read that many.)
And the characters are quite vivid, and all are down on their luck. We shift from Kris' perspective to a waitress in Hooters style bar, who is a computer animation grad but can't find a job in it, and has over $25,000 in student loans to pay off.
She's a huge metal head, and metal gets her through the day.

In between each chapter there's interview footage with the metal bands and bits about the industry.

It's rather innovative, and to be focusing on women or in a female perspective in regards to heavy metal (which is often considered primarily straight male) is rather cool and somewhat subversive. I'm digging it. (Yes, I've been reading the book and reading comic reviews -- and my writing style or blogging style has a tendency to mimic whatever I'm reading at the moment. Hence the reason I have about six writing styles I can pull out of my head. I write like Proust, when I read Proust. I write like this when I read fanboy geek or heavy metal noir.)

5. Remember when I was whinging about how many frigging streaming channels we have in the US? Well...they've added more.

To date...we have:

* Facebook (yes, you can watch television shows on Facebook, I know...)
* Apple TV (apparently Apple didn't appreciate the fact that it didn't have a streaming channel to compete with everyone elses..)
* Google Play
* Roku
* Amazon
* Netflix
* Hulu
* DC
* HBO NOW aka "NOW" (it's just a channel now, it is soon to become a full service streamer)
* Starz (ditto)
* PBS
* AMC
* British Television
* Sling
* Netflix
* Chiller
* Shudder
* Romance Classics or something like that
* Hallmark
* OWN
*CBS All Access
*ESPN
* Epix
* Fandango
* Youtube
* DirectTV
* AT&T

Coming soon...

Disney +
Warner
T-Mobile (it wants to compete with A T & T.)

See what I mean? And I have only covered half of them. And none of them are free.
This is why we're all watching different things. It is impossible for anyone person to access all those services. Honestly there may well be such a thing as TOO much content, and too many distribution channels.

And some of them have over 1000 television shows. Help. I'm drowning in content.

6. It's hot here, but it will be short-lived. (Also hot depending on your point of view. 90 degrees isn't that bad. There places around the world that are in the 100s.) The news stated this morning that they can't call something a heat wave when it's not really more than two days, we'll get thunderstorms on Wed, and a cooling trend -- dip into the lower 80s. (Now if I were in Martha's Vineyard and this was the weather report, they'd be whining about it being a heat wave. LOL! Wimps.)

I hope your IBS does improve. It's awful stuff to live with.

I was given access to Netflix by the son of a friend. I also have Amazon Prime, so I can get a lot of stuff on Amazon. I also have HBO because for some reason my cable service is offering it for free these days. I've watched ZERO of it. Maybe that's why they're offering it for free?

I so don't know shit about what things do these days.

Today I had a 3 year old show me how to make movies of my photos on my iphone. I'm now being shamed by generation barely here. (grin)

I think this move to put content behind a paywall is going to backfire, eventually. It's good for creators at least--so many platforms means more people getting work.

I'm still not buying anything except for cable and that is only so that my family can watch sports (NBA, WNBA, and Australian Football). I kind of miss television but not as much as I expected. I think my taste is out of fashion. I don't like antiheroes. Or superheroes. Except for the X-Men--a favorite from childhood, and Wonder Woman, just because.

What a relief to have hot water again. This gas leak situation is serious.
