1. Work was a mixed bag. I had a telephone negotiation that consisted of five men yelling at me or over me. We settled nothing. And right now, I've decided I do not care and am going to work on other projects instead. They can all go frak themselves.

Chidi has developed the habit of singing the praises of his friends in the workplace, if they are in hearing distance or not, whenever we talk. I finally told him it was a tad excessive and I really didn't need to hear how great this person was for a full twenty minutes...Sort of stating the obvious, also redundant. Chidi was put out by my statement and told me I was great too. (Yes, but you say this about everyone Chidi for twenty minutes..I'm wondering if this is a self-help guru thing -- if you say amazing things about folks you will attract luck and beautiful things in return?) During this discussion, I discovered via another co-worker (who is in her twenties) that they now have "ax" throwing contests at local bars in Brooklyn.

Chidi: A is a fantastic ax thrower.
Me: Where do you do this ax throwing?
A: In bars...
ME: Why do I have the feeling you aren't kidding about that?
A: Oh no, it's a real thing.
Chidi: I'm not sure I'd want to be in a bar with ax throwing, unless they locked you in a separate room to do it.
A: Oh some of the bars do, but the Brooklyn one's don't.
Me: Good to know, will be sure to avoid in the future. (Not that I've been inside a bar in years..I did this in my early 40s, lost interest in it after 45 -- going to bars, not going to bars with ax throwing -- there was no such thing back then..in the dark ages of 2010 and even if there was -- I'd have avoided it. Honestly, maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure alcohol and ax throwing should be mixed. Sounds a mite dangerous.)

2. New Television series

The only ones I remember from extensive list are:

* Carnival -- this is the new steampunk fantasy series premiering on Amazon (which got ahead of Joss Whedon's steampunk fantasy series). It's about the fae living amongst the Victorians. Stars Orlando Bloom. I think it's premiering at the end of this month.

* Watchman -- which is the creator of Lost and the Leftover's take on Alan Moore's iconic Watchmen series. This one takes place years after the Watchment took place, and features aging versions of the Watchmen in subsidiary or supporting roles. With Jean Smart, Regina King, Jeremy Irons, and Don Johnson in lead roles. I think it's premiering in November on HBO.

* His Dark Materials -- the Philip K. Pullman miniseries based on his books, also premiering on HBO on a date yet to be determined. Stars Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, and Lin Manuel Miranda

* The Witcher -- premiering on Netflix (no, it's NOT based on the video games, it's based on the Polish fantasy novels, and stars Henry Cavill (of Tudors and Superman) in the title role.) It's about a soceress, a monster hunter, and girl with magical powers teaming up to handle a difficult world that has been invaded by demons. Witchers were trained to hunt down the demonic monsters.

* Stumptown -- about a femal ex-Marine private eye, named Dex, who reminds me a lot of VI Waschowski novels...she's tough as nails, and the show is quite noir. Also is that Chadwick Boseman playing the Detective? He looks like him. Coby Smulders plays Dex. It premieres September 25 on ABC. (ABC is promoting the hell out of it.)

* The Good Place (Sept. 25 on NBC)

*The Mandalorian (Nov. 12 on Disney+) -Disney+ is launching its streaming service with a splashy debut: The first live-action Star Wars TV series ever made. Game of Thrones actor Pedro Pascal stars as the titular Mandalorian, a gun fighter who hails from Mandalore (the home of fan favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett) and operates at the outer edges of the galaxy between the fall of the Empire (in Episode VI) and the rise of the First Order (in Episode VII). The story will exist in the same universe as the Star Wars movies but, as far as we know, characters like Rey and Han Solo will not appear in the show. Carl Weathers, Gina Carano, Werner Herzog, Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito and Taika Waititi will round out the cast of the series, written by Iron Man and The Lion King director Jon Favreau.

*The Crown (TBA on Netflix) - an entirely new cast takes over the roles, including recent Oscar winner Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II. The next two seasons will cover the years 1964-1970, during which Elizabeth’s sister Margaret (now played by the legendary Helena Bonham Carter) reportedly began an affair and Elizabeth’s son Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor) met his eventual second wife, Camilla (Emerald Fennell). Season 3 certainly promises the potential of more palace intrigue than ever before. (The guy who played the bad guy in Outlander has taken over the role of Prince Philip, and the guy who played the older Exorcist in the Exorcist series has taken over the role of Magaret's hubby.)

Right now, I want a mindless show that is light and fluffy and I can't find it. I want to laugh and like the people. What I have is Reef Break (no), The Hot Zone (no), The Good Fight (definitely not), Blood and Treasure (sigh), Legion (ugh),
The In-Between (eh..), and Victoria.

Sigh. I need help. There has to be something out there that doesn't feature characters I want to strangle.

3. Still struggling with book. But hey I finished the last chapter. And am now at 610 pages. Ugh, revising this thing, should I choose to do it, is going to be a nightmare. Also every time I add to it -- I have to scroll forever -- apple laptops are not conducive to scrolling.

I feel like I'm whinging. This is because I am whinging. Sorry.

Also getting a headache due to shift in barometric pressure -- another huge storm is rolling in, due to hit late tomorrow. Chidi advised me of this as we were heading towards the trains.

Ax throwing and alcohol is definitely something I'd want to avoid.

Hope your headache goes away!

The reboot of Charmed is on Netflix, and it's very fluffy and silly. And I'm enjoying it more than I thought.

Also, the Four Weddings and a Funeral series is half-loaded on Hulu (5 of 10 episodes now available), but I can't guarantee that you won't want to strangle characters; the first two episodes are a bit rough that way. But people look very pretty and it's fairly mindless as well, although lots more cussing and infidelity than Charmed...

Good luck with your search! I'm looking forward to The Good Place returning. Also, I may try The Witcher for the weird factor, and for the pretty people. Depends on how violent it is; I'm a wimp.

Re-watching The Good Place sounds like a great option, to be honest. I did rewatch season one, but haven't rewatched season two yet. So I might be doing the same thing soon enough.

Minor correction. The video games are also based on the novels and were developed in Poland. The monster hunter is the Witcher, Geralt. The sorceress, Yennefer, is one of his girlfriends, but very much her own woman. I presume the girl is Ciri, who is a protege of the Witcher. They all have magical powers of some sort. The tone is dark. (Depending on how the TV show wants to handle it there could be serious drug use implied.) Folks in their world tend to fear, even hate them more than admire them. Kind of like bounty hunters, they get called in when something much more scary than them shows up. At least in the games they are thought of by the locals more as mercenaries than heroes and have their own agenda, beyond what the locals want them for.

It just means the story lines aren't going to be exactly like the games. (So fan boys need not start whining.) I've never read the books, but I assume that like the games they are full of confusing politics. No doubt they are hoping Game of Thrones fans will like this series as well. I don't really care for the games, but the characters are interesting and it is a very rich and mysterious fantasy world, so I wouldn't steer anyone away from the TV series based on what I know.

I suspect this is why Mike and I plowed through Death in Paradise (plus it was leaving Netflix). Yesterday I was putting away the jigsaw puzzle we were working on while watching it and realized how strongly the two things had linked themselves in my mind.

Have you tried the Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries?

We're rewatching The Good Place. I, too, am in need of fluffy, non-irritating TV. Comedy is hard to come by in the time of Trump.
