Aug. 18th, 2019 04:40 pm1. Hmmmm... The Rocky Horror Castle has been turned into a hotel where you can book the ultimate rocky horror experience -- it's also apparently close to Legoland.
Okay. Makes sense I suppose.
2. A discussion on FB about Veronica Mars, and why anyone would ship Logan who was such a jerk. Various people challenged the person stating that Spike was similar to Logan and also a jerk.
I had to restrain myself from stating, that a lot of people felt Veronica and Buffy were jerks. And honestly, being a jerk is in the eye of the beholder.
Then someone posted that "Shippers were evil".
Well, no. Just because someone doesn't further our world-view or our desires, doesn't make them evil. Does shine a light on our self-interest and not necessarily in a way we'd like. Also, if it weren't for shippers -- the show wouldn't have been continued, there'd be no movie, and no fourth season. You should frigging thank the shippers that you got Season 4 Veronica Mars, or for that matter any season past S1. It was not a highly rated series -- it like Buffy, survived because of the shippers.
Cult tv/genre nitch tv survives because of its fandom. Star Trek wouldn't have made it past it's three seasons if it weren't for the fandom. Star Wars wouldn't have made it past Return of the Jedi if it weren't for the fandom. Farscape wouldn't have gotten that finale four hour movie if it weren't for the fans. BattleStar Galatica v.2 wouldn't have happened without the fandom. Doctor Who would have lasted past two seasons with the fandom. Supernatural wouldn't be going on for fourteen seasons without its fandom. Angel wouldn't have made it to S5 without the Spike fandom, or the Angel fandom. Buffy wouldn't have made it seven years without its fandom.
Don't hate shippers and fans -- they are the reason you have more content. Love them. Thank them.
But alas, I can't post this because the post with the discussion is long gone from FB -- which is a good thing. The Universe is keeping me from getting into another unnecessary, insanely time-consuming and soul-sucking skirmish on the internet. I've wasted far too much of my time fighting with people I've never met face-to-face, have never heard their voice, don't appear to know anything about me -- on the internet. It's depressing really. This is not the way to make connections. I doesn't make me happy. (Actually the fights make me miserable. I've no idea why I engage in them.) And they usually end badly.
I may try to do a free trial of Hulu later in the fall, when more television series that I'm interested in pop up on it. Veronica Mars S4 isn't enough. Also I'm really NOT in the mood for it at the moment. I'm a moody television watcher.
3. Started binge watching The Expanse -- I was about a season and a half behind. I'd stopped approximately around episode seven of S2, way back when it was airing live on Syfy. I'd seen all of the first season and first six episodes of S2, which basically cover the first novel in the sci-fi series by John SA Corey. I'd read the first book in the series "Leviathan Wakes" which covered it. But couldn't get into the next books -- also lost interest. I don't know why. I just couldn't focus on it when it was on.
Then this weekend, I found it was the only thing that sparked my interest. Everything else -- I just couldn't get into. I don't know why. I honestly have no clue why certain things spark my interest at various points in time and others don't. I wish I did -- because it would make it easier to find things to read and watch that don't put me to sleep or annoy me, and I enjoy. But alas, this key information is kept from me. I have to accidentally stumble upon it.
Anyhow -- right now I'm loving some of the new characters introduced. S2 is pulling me in better than S1 did. I'm also finding that my initial dislike of James Holden (from the novel Levithan Wakes) was well warranted. He is a self-righteous jerk who crosses all sorts of moral lines to support his world-view. I do however like everyone around him, particularly Naomi, and the new Botanist. Also Amos is growing on me. Bobby and United Nations Security Council member Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo) are among my new favorites. I love both of them. The male characters are less likable.
It's described as an anti-hero show on Wikipedia, but it doesn't really feel like one. It's not as violent or gritty as Westworld or The 100. Also there's a lot of fascinating hard sci-fi and biological science fiction that I'm enjoying.
This season is admittedly darker than the first season -- in that more innocent people are ruthlessly killed. A lovely woman is spaced -- I was upset about that. And another man, a relief worker who is shipping supplies to the survivors is killed in cross-fire. Also upsetting.
At any rate, I'm interested and gripped by it. So will most likely make through S3. Then have to wait until S4 emerges.
Meanwhile, I can watch other related sci-fi adventures on Netflix. There's Another Life starring Katee Satcliff, that appears to be horror/sci-fi.
4. On a personal note...Wales is doing poorly. She's going into the hospital tomorrow for a battery of tests on her heart. She contracted an infection that she didn't resolve quickly enough and it's gone to her heart. She's unemployed, and estranged from her family. Her mother just went into hospice again in Kansas City area.
She called to tell me about that, and ask about our upcoming thirtieth college reunion. We've decided not to go -- mainly because there's not much planned, and the people we'd want to hang with most likely won't be there. I do not like the people who are planning it.
Also, it's costly and she can't afford it.
She told me not to worry, it's just a lot of tests. She has heart arrhythmia and will require some changes. I know better than to get too involved -- boundaries.
But.
Sigh. I knew going in that 2019 was going to be hard year. Just wish it would get easier for everyone around me.
Okay. Makes sense I suppose.

Date: 2019-08-19 07:29 pm (UTC)I liked The Expanse. I'm glad it found a new home on whatever streaming service picked it up. I assume we non-streamers will get to see season four sometime during my lifetime. Though I am still waiting for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to be released on DVD so maybe not... I've even contemplated buying Emmy screeners off EBay.
That's fair...although I'm hard-pressed to think of a character this doesn't apply to at one time or another in this series. The hubris of humanity, in general and in particular, is a recurring motif.

It's Amazon -- so possibly. But S4 has yet to appear anyhow. There's only three seasons currently available.

But at the point that I'm watching he has blinders on, and is completely unself-aware. While the other characters keep smacking him upside the head -- saying WTF are you doing dude? People are dying here -- get your priorities straight!
