1. Checked NY1 and the protests in Union Square and outside Barclays tonight seem tame, and non-violent thank heavens. This means no "National Guard" being deployed, and no curfew being imposed. Also, it furthers the protestors cause. In addition information has been released by the media that many cops have stood with the protestors and are supporting them, proving that not all police are bad or racist. They aren't. An African-American police man went out of his way to help me years ago, when I thought I lost my wallet. He convinced me that I most likely left it at work, to not cancel everything, to wait, and he gave me enough money to get a subway pass to get home and back again. It was an act of kindness I will never forget. On my commute to and from work up until March 17 - I passed police all the time, and rode the trains with them - they were men and women of all races.
I never saw them treat anyone with anything but respect, and I rode trains with people of all races, and most of the time on these trains, I was the only white person (although my skin tone is not white - it's more of an olive peach tone and I tan easily). I never felt in danger.

I think it is important not to generalize. We humans have a tendency to generalize about things and make assumptions. We are also very self-righteous in our rage, but often not very kind. Once again - I beg of you to be KIND first, and mindful. Rage is a useless emotion - it has a tendency to burn the house down.

2. The Great - Seen about seven episodes so far, and it's disappointing. Nicholas Hoult's Peter the III is a bit one-note. And Dakota Fanning's Catherine is well, engaging, but slow to action. The best thing in the series is her maid-servant who like myself is growing impatient. The humor is a bit on the slapstick side and not all that...well, I have yet to laugh.

So, I'm thinking of giving up on it.

3. Disney Plus is the gift that keeps on giving...apparently it has full collections of all of the Marvel Cartoons, and all the X-men animated cartoons. Between it, Hulu, and Netflix, I am in animated heaven. If I get HBO Max - it may be hard for me to do anything but watch cartoons 24/7. This is not a good idea. So I am ignoring HBO Max.

4. Speaking of Cartoons - I decided to watch another of the Steven Universe episodes. Two in fact.

The first dealt with Steven's friend Lars - and magic moss. I found it oddly comforting. Everyone was afraid of the moss. Steven said that his mother planted the moss. Lars told Steven it was his fault and his idiotic mother's fault. Steven said that his mother saw the beauty and good in all things, and perhaps they were looking at the moss in the wrong way. So working together they take the moss up the mountain, discovering that's where it wanted to go along - so it could bloom into beautiful rose quartz flowers that fluttered across the city.

Reminded me of the first or introductory reading at church this morning, which stated that it was important to remember that the only way out of this was together. We all had to work together to get through it.

In this episode - Lars has to work with Steven to make friends. And they have to work together to get to the top of the mountain to release the moss.
The moss is only evil, because it is frustrated, kept from what it needs to do. Just as Lars is frustrated and a bully to Steven, because he wants to make friends with these people but feels like they don't want him. He bullies Steven to make friends with them, but this doesn't work. Steven tries to help him - and then he wants to leap into a dangerous situation to be friends with them, Steven stops him. Leading to Lars finally agreeing to work with Steven to save his friends, Steven and himself - by helping the moss reach the mountaintop and be freed. Lars stops thinking about himself and puts Steven and the others first, he becomes mindful of their needs, and aids the moss in freeing itself and blooming, thereby freeing himself as well.

Again at church this morning - the wisdom story was about a selfish monkey who wanted to make friends. The selfish monkey misunderstands the Golden Rule - "Do Unto Others as you would have them do unto you" - when his valley floods - he attempts to save the fishes, by bringing them into the tree with him. When the waters recede he is surrounded by dead fish. His friend explains to him that he misunderstood - we should do unto others as they need to have done unto them - be mindful that their needs and concerns are different than ours. And instead of telling them to be like us, be mindful that they are not us and have different needs, and different desires.

Very comforting story.

The second one about Onion - was similar, Steven tries to understand Onion by relating Onion's issues back to himself, it's not until Steven looks past himself and talks to Onion and realizes that while Onion does have similar issues they are also very different. And Onion - yes, needs the Little Ranger Action Figure more than Steven but for different reasons than Steven needs the action figure. Their situations are different.

What a lovely children's cartoon series. I highly recommend it.

I get what you say about "The Great". I'm surprised that I like it that much and expect the whole thing to start to annoy me because there are a lot of things I would find annoying in a different mood. I think I saw 6 episodes and have yet to watch the last. I had hoped to actually see her on the throne but I guess they save that for season 2.

I really enjoyed Fleabag but I wouldn't even recognize it as comedy if it wasn't labeled as such.

Never got into 30 Rock because I didn't even understand what was being satirized. Unbreakable Kimmie has made me laught out loud but there are some episodes I couldn't watch (basically everything with Jon Hamm and the terribly unfunny court scenes).

I'm glad you liked those episodes! Lars and Onion are somewhat contentious characters in SU Fandom. (Not everyone warmed up to them...)

Steven Universe, in general, can be very soothing in troubled times.

COMING UP:

"Lion 2": Lion takes Steven and Connie to the movies, with some very interesting detours. Steven's first hint of Rose's many secrets...

"Steven the Sword Fighter": The first of many great Steven/Pearl episodes. (Zach Gallison and Dee Dee Magno Hall are amazing together.)
