Day 24 of the 30 Day Song Challenge - a song by a band that you wish were still together..

There so many. I guess the operative bit would be that it's impossible for them to get back together? Also, some bands really seemed to be more about the front man than anything else. And had run their course - I may miss them, but I'm not sure there's much juice left.

People have already posted a lot of songs by The Who, who I adore. I actually met Roger Daltry during a marketing event. And got to see him reunite with a manager or band player he had a major falling out with. I also got a lot of inside intell on the Who by their friend and marketing manager rep, Martin Lewis. I don't remember any of it, by the way. And I found him less impressive in person. Actually the only member of The Who that impresses me is Eric Clapton, who created even better music post Who.

Feel somewhat the same way about the Runaways and the Doors. I thought about the Doors - but really that was just Jim Morrison.

Okay enough of that.

I'm going with...a band that I felt everyone gelled perfectly together and was insanely versatile - as this song proves.

And..mainly because it's a happy tune and makes me smile, and I kind of want to smile at the moment. Whether it really fits the rules of the meme or not? Eh. I'll let you decide.

Pink Floyd, "Wish You Were Here"

Near the end of the documentary on the making of "Wish You Were Here" (the album), there is a spellbinding moment when Roger Waters and David Gilmour (interviewed separately) both play the opening notes of the title track on acoustic guitar, and tell the interviewer how they built the song together.

It is a beautiful moment of artistic collaboration--but it still makes a devoted Floyd fan sad, because it was one of the last times Waters and Gilmour were truly on the same page. Their relationship deteriorated all through The Wall and Animals; by the time they reached The Final Cut, Gilmour and Mason were all but session players in their own band.

Is it too late? Could they reunite and produce something approaching the old power? Probably not. Richard Wright is gone now; Gilmour doesn't seem interested in continuing the name; and Waters is too used to running things his own way. To quote a member of your band above, all things must pass.

How I wish
How I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls
Living in a fishbowl
Year after Year
Running over the same old ground
What have we found?
The same old fears
Wish you were here

You saw Gilmour's Floyd. Musically, they were fine, but you never got the impression they had anything to say.

As a solo artist, Waters has the opposite problem. He has plenty to say--and you get the feeling that if he could yell at the audience for two hours and still get paid, he would dump the music in a second.

Technically, this band is still together, but at this point only its most famous lead singer is still left, other band members having passed away or gone on to other projects. Had the privilege of seeing them live in 70's, which featured the band's "classic" lineup.

It was occasionally joked (kindly, I assure you) that Annie Haslam could sing notes that only dogs could hear. An exaggeration, yes, but... it wasn't just a matter of hitting some very high notes, but that she could deliver them with perfect pitch and intensity. A five-octave range? Not an exaggeration.

There's plenty of videos out there that show her showing off that range, and some even remind one that while she may have been the star attraction, the band was superb all around also, and their arrangements, which like the Moody Blues, freely borrowed from classical styles, were quite memorable.

This vid is kind of neat in that it's a fairly short, "unplugged" version of one of their more famous tunes. VHS picture quality, but matters not, it's delightful in it's simplicity.

And here's a sign that great music keeps getting rediscovered by those who come after. Never heard of these folks-- seems largely like one fellow who is a serious multi-instrumentalist, plus a female vocalist who does Haslam proud in her rendering, which is very demanding.

Cool!

:-)

The seed that you plant today
Tomorrow will be a tree
And living goes on this way
It's all part of you and me

I remember seeing Renaissance as part of a triple bill with Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. Fairport (post-Sandy version) opened; Renaissance came on after intermission and everybody went to the bathroom. (Really, people? Really?!)

Annie was wearing a dazzling, sequined dress that she designed herself (of course) and they ran through a solid set of their 70s catalogue, notably avoiding their aborted recent attempt at synth pop (thank god).

I love the clip. If Annie wants to bring them back with a fresh spin, an acoustic take on the big, symphonic numbers could be interesting...

I'm going to disagree with you here. All the bands you mention had a particular group dynamic in their "classic" lineups, and they were much more than their lead singer or lead guitarist.

For The Who: they weren't just Daltrey on vocals and Townshend on guitar; the rhythm section of Entwistle (on bass) and Moon (drums) were a key part of their sound.

The Stones aren't really the Stones without Charlie Watts on drums; and I miss John Deacon on bass for Queen almost (almost) as much as I miss Freddie. (Deacon wrote both "Another One Bites the Dust" and "You're My Best Friend.")

Renaissance, in its classic 70s incarnation, was a five person band with Annie out front. All five members wrote music, especially on long form cuts like "Scheherezade." Yeah, now it's Annie and a Buncha New Guys, but that wasn't always the case.

I cannot take Adam Lambert seriously as "Queen" lead vocalist. Brian May is one of the greatest guitarists in rock history, but I kind of resent him for misusing the brand name for this half-baked oldies show. (Yeah, I know: the Queen name is a ton of money.)

I don't think there is anything in the meme that forbids wishing there was more from a group in its prime that can't actually get together anymore due to sheer time like the Beatles. Otherwise you'd be limited to very recent groups.

Let me present a couple of groups (not actually bands) I really enjoyed that broke up for two different reasons:

The first, the Ames Brothers were a quartet of quite homely men with beautiful voices. Really enjoyed them when I was a kid, and was sad there would be no more when they broke up because of the usual pressures. The lead singer, Ed Ames, went on to some success as a single act, but he was up against guys like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in his genre and the continuing rise of Rock. He eventually became an actor and may be best know by people about your age as Fess Parker's Indian sidekick on the Daniel Boone TV show.

The second, Joe and Eddie were a couple of African-American, folk and gospel singers who enjoyed when I was a teen. They broke up the tough way when Joe was killed in a car accident.
