Day #17 of 30 Day Film Challenge.
Favorite Film Sequel
First, thank you for all of your comments. Sorry I've not been replying - no real time, and I can't focus on much at the moment on anything - work is about all that I can currently manage. And that's giving me headaches.
Hmmm - when I went to find my movie on youtube, discovered it's playing at various movie theaters. Which is odd. Are movie theaters open now? Are they playing it because they can't find anything else? Has my computer decided to jump back to the 1980s...because can I go too? (There's a few classmates I'd like to neuter or smack upside the head.)
Oh. Apparently it's the 40th Anniversary of this particular film or it was in May, they had to wait until now to celebrate - because, well, we were all locked down in May. We are still now - just not all of us, and in various stages.
Anyhow...this is the rare sequel that I actually preferred to the original film and in this specific series? It's actually my favorite film in the series, period. Most sequels tend to be let downs. Unless they are stand-alone films like the Marvel films. Few build well on their source material. And in the case of this film - not only did it build well on the source material, it expanded on it, and overtook it - and out shone it. If it hadn't, I honestly wonder if we'd have had the franchise that we do today.
Another tidbit on this film? I saw it in 1980. I was eagerly anticipating it. And remember my brother and I persuading my father to take us. We saw it at the Midland Theater in Kansas City, a huge theater, about an hour from our home - on the balcony. It's the same theater that we saw the silent film presentation of Napeolean, and various musicals. It was an event, and it was amazing.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), dir. by George Miller
An unexpected triumph: 20 years after Thunderdome, Miller storms back with the best entry in the series, the most fully realized version of his testosterone-poisoned dystopia. Tom Hardy is fine as Max, but Charlize Theron dominates the screen as Furiosa, the most iconic role of her career.

Date: 2020-09-17 09:56 am (UTC)Man, I miss our little chats after school and as I was getting my stuff out of my locker, which happened to be just outside her classroom, between classes. She never favored me grade-wise, but she did take me to a poetry workshop at a local university with another promising girl. That made me feel so special. She also asked to keep my (fanfiction!) completed alternative ending assignment for Romeo and Juliet to use as an example for future classes. I told her she could have a copy of it because I kept the originals of all my writing, and she nodded and said, "And well you should."
Back to Empire and Jedi, though: You do know that you and I have extremely unpopular opinions in that fandom, yes? Most of the Star Wars fans hated both sequels because they were all about the gen action like the dogfighting X-wings and TIE-fighters. They didn't care about all the romance, betrayal of friends, etc.; and they certainly didn't care about the Ewoks. In their minds, the Ewoks were a premonition of the ridiculous Jar Jar Binks who was to come.
Ah, to heck with them. You and I know good cinema when we see it, correct? Good cinema plays on all of the emotions, while at the same time having just enough special effects to draw us into the story without overwhelming the story (as they did in the prequels and subsequent remakes of the original trilogy). Fans of the adorkable, unite!

There is no question the first film was revolutionary in so many ways, and to me at least, all but demanded more of the story be told. What were people expecting? The exact same rush as the original? Or was it like many works of art, the artist simply has a different vision than you might have, and that makes the artist "wrong" and you right?
Dunno, but I thought the trilogy was very well done overall, and frankly I expect the machines sent us Donald The Magnificent(TM) as the first step in eventually making batteries out of all of us!
Neo! Where are you, we need you now!
