Day 6 of 30 Day of Halloween Challenge

The prompt is Scariest horror movie soundtrack

Hmmm..

And the rejected score determined by the movie studio to be too scary for audiences. They made William Freidkian remove it - because it scared the audience so badly.

My pick:

Psycho (1960), directed by Alfred Hitchcock; score by Bernard Herrmann

Herrmann is a legend among composers, working with Hitchcock during the most successful stretch of Hitchcock's career. Even after they split, Hitchcock acknowledged that Herrmann's Psycho score was essential in ratcheting up the tension in the movie.

I'm not going to link the shower scene or even the opening credits; let's go for a deep cut:

(Herrmann alternates between a swirling, agitated score to reflect Marion's state of mind and a soothing, "gliding" string arrangement for road travel music. )

**********

Now my favorite Herrmann score, the one that really gives me a chill, is The Day the Earth Stood Still (that theremin--wooo!). But that's scifi, not horror, and does not qualify for this meme.

I don't watch horror movies so nothing to contribute.

I don't know if the rejected score sounds scary to me--but it sure is loud and dissonant. Not something I would voluntarily subject myself to.

Lalo Schifrin did the excellent "Mission Impossible" TV series theme.
