How about... Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Hoeg.

I devoured that book in the 1990s.

And then saw the movie - which wasn't as good. Read the book, the movie was kind of disappointing.

The book is better than the film - it goes into detail about different types of snow, and is more scientific.

Interesting, I've never heard of The Pavilion, should check it out.

It was written in the forties. Very creepy and atmospheric.
