Basically stuff I don't want to put in my lockdown updates.
1. It's Well Past Time to Rethink Auteur Theory and the Way Actresses Are Treated
Goes into some depth about Stanely Kubrick's treatment of Shelly Duvall, who gives rare interviews now. Why? Well she made the colossal mistake of doing the Dr. Phil Show - and they ripped her apart, and gave her a nervous breakdown. (I don't watch Dr. Phil and never have. Also I have not forgiven Oprah for giving Dr. Phil and Dr. OZ, two shark oil salesmen, or fake doctors that destroy millions of lives daily - a platform.) So, in this rare interview with Roger Ebert years back - she discussed how Kubrick bascially manipulated her performance - he would scare her to death on a daily basis, make her cry, etc. And Angelica Huston who was dating Jack Nicholson at the time and watching this unfold - was appalled by how the two men ganged up on her. Stephen King famously loathes the movie and calls Duvall's performance the equivalent of a screaming dishrag.
Also discusses how Hitchcock tormented Tippi Hedren on the Birds, traumatizing her to get a performance. Hitchcock was a sexual predator, and manipulated and tortured his actresses.
2. ABC Daytime Back on Broadway
Basically Daytime Soap Actors doing Theater performances.
3. Zack Snyder Director's Cut of Justice League will Debut on March 18 on HBO Max
Okay, for everyone who doesn't know the story by now? Zack Snyder was the showrunner for DC's Superhero film franchise, taking over from Chris Nolan, with Nolan's brother writing or co-writing the scripts. Snyder, as far as I know, was a professional and people liked working with him. No problems were sited. Anyhow - he is known for his visual style - his films basically look like paintings. And the Russos borrowed heavily from his slow motion painting style action sequences for their Marvel films.
Anyhow, he directed Justice League, but had to leave before post-production was completed - when his daughter committed suicide.
On March 12, 2017, the suicide of his daughter Autumn prompted Snyder to withdraw from post-production work on Justice League in May 2017 to be with his family, which resulted in Warner Bros and Joss Whedon completing the film.
Following his daughter's suicide, Snyder began a philanthropy career directed towards suicide prevention and awareness. Snyder promoted this effort on social media by selling shirts and merchandise related to the Snyder Cut and, in December 2020, announced that this effort had raised more than $500,000 in charitable donations.
Here's the trailer for The Snyder Cut of Justice League.
I saw the Whedon/Snyder version of Justice League - and ...it was jarring. I know people who loved it - I didn't. I found the mix of the two directors to be very jarring. And hiring Whedon to be a mistake - their styles are kind of discordant. Whedon sucks at action sequences and visuals, but is great at quippy dialogue, Snyder is brilliant at visuals - his action sequences look like paintings. They are stunning. And his style was borrowed heavily by the Russos. Actually the Russos who did Endgame and Infinity War would have been a better fit than Whedon. I think Hollywood finally figured out that Whedon is not a very good director. Which was echoed by Nick Frost in an interview on the Nevers - he didn't like Whedon as a director - he said he had no clear vision and no idea what he wanted to do, and got irritated on set.
The Snyder cut is four hours long - and appears to be epic - like Infinity War. It is nothing like Whedon's version - Whedon cut Snyder's film to ribbons and reshot a lot of it. Leaving portions with the Joker, Alfred, etc on the cutting room floor. Superman was barely in Whedon's cut. Cyborg was also barely in Whedon's version.
I am admittedly curious - because it may fill in some of the gaps. Warner apparently has no interest in continuing it with Snyder. But the guy who is running Warner right now - may well be on his way out? We'll see what AT&T does.
4. WandaVision
This series is getting more interesting as we go. Apparently Wanda pulled a new Petro from another verse - it's the Quicksilver from The X-Men films. (The previous Peitro was better looking and fit the Petro in the comics. But this actor is a better actor and more engaging.)
Also it's doing a great job of parodying and paying homage to situation comedies through the years. We are now in the 1990s and showing how the 90s did sitcoms.
And there's the horror element - which has a Twilight Zone vibe.
Wanda appears to have lost control of her powers. And it's interesting that she has no name. But they paid homage to the comics by dressing Wanda and the Vision in the 1980s comics attire.
I enjoyed it.
5. Buffy Panel 2011 Panel - this is the panel where they make a few interesting off-hand comments about the work environment that is disturbing. Among topics casually thrown out? DB wandering about naked on the set of Angel. The long work hours on Buffy because they had the budget.
Most of the time they don't - but every once and a while, they let something slip. And I'd go, WTF? Oh god. Did they just say that? Dear god. I'm glad I'm not an actor and don't do that for a living. Frigging hell.
Most of these people have become close friends at the conventions.
