Naturally the number of ratings will be a small sample of the total viewership. The question is whether (as with a poll) those who rate a show reasonably reflect the audience.
There are certainly times when that's not true, as you point out. But that's why I chose Queen's Gambit as a comparable show: both would seem to appeal to a similar audience. Maybe I'm wrong about that and QG appeals more to men. But to avoid that problem entirely, Little Women is at 7.8 and Bridgerton at 7.3.
