1. Apparently Bridgerton is the most watched Netflix Series EVER!
The link provided above also discusses why black actors and actors of color need to be seen in more historical dramas. And the excuses for not including them, don't quite work any longer.
2. I was amused by a fight that broke out at scans daily over the toxic Snyder fandom. They were arguing that Snyder's fans on social media aren't toxic. Amused, because everyone else believes they are, except for well the fans themselves.
I think when humans get obsessive or obsessive/compulsive about something they love or have convinced themselves they want, are bored, and frustrated about other things - it's kind of a cocktail for toxicity. I've seen it in every fandom. And it's by no means relegated by gender.
I am ambivalent about Zack Snyder's films. They don't really work for me - but I also don't enjoy video games. And get bored watching action scenes or fight scenes after a while. Snyder basically just does action sequences, and paintings. I find his films exhausting. I've seen a lot of them in theaters with girl-friends over the years. CW and I saw The 300 and The Watchmen in the theater, she was dating Frank Miller at the time.
ME: Isn't Frank Miller married?
CW: Well, yeah.
Me:So how are you dating him exactly?
CW: Well, it's more friendly dating - we've not slept together.
Me: Good to know you draw the line somewhere.
CW: What? They are separated.
This was about twenty years ago. I did not understand what she found attractive in Miller.
CW: Have you read anything by the comic book artist Frank Miller?
Me: Yeah. Quite a bit. Why?
CW: Well, I've been kind of dating him - and promised him that I'd check his stuff out.
ME: It's violent, dark, noirish, and misanthropic. But he's good at dialogue and the art is interesting.
CW: Cool. Let's see 300! Plus pretty men!
After seeing Sin City with a male friend (cjlasky), who hated the film, I liked it better than he did ...
CJlasky: God, that's just overdone.
Me: It's kind of a male romance novel
CJL: This explains why I didn't like it..I don't like romance
Me: Well it's not supposed to be deep, it's noir and fun. You have to admit that the graphic art style of the visuals was kind of interesting.
Anyhow, Snyder didn't do Sin City - that was Rodriquez. But similar style.
CW loved 300, I was ambivalent. We went to the comic book store afterwards and looked at the graphic novel by Miller - and it was page by page Miller's style and work. She was blown away. I appreciated the style - I just found it kind of boring and over the top, and like some romance novels I'd read - where women are kind of idealized along with men.
CW was less impressed with Watchmen, although we both agreed it may well have been the most literal and the best use of Halleguha by Leonard Cohen that I've seen to date. Also, All Along the Watch Tower - it had a great soundtrack. Also the visuals were fun. But the plot was hard to follow - than again so's the plot of The Watchmen.
MD, another friend, and I went to see Man of Steel, and MD and I saw Batman vs. Superman. We liked Man of Steel better - it had more story, less action. Batman vs. Superman was a bit too heavy on the action.
I've discussed these films with cubical mate, and the woman I saw Black Panther with - she preferred Justice League, Batman vs. Superman, and Man of Steel and Suicide Squad to the Marvel films, and Nolan's movies. She found those to be less interesting and not as rewatchable. She worked in film - and editing. It was an interesting discussion.
But, I still prefer the MCU films - I like dialogue, and humor. The video game and big fight sequences don't tend to thrill me. But others love them.
3. Netflix has been busy, busy, busy building content.
It has now added Zack Snyder (Army of the Dead - a zombie heist film), Tim Burton (Wednesday's school days at Neverdale), and has Ryan Murphy and Shondra Rhimes. It's also busy doing a live action series based on Avatar:The Last Airbender.
It wants to be all things to all people.

Date: 2021-02-25 03:08 pm (UTC)1.Netflix has released some numbers for “The Queen's Gambit.” According to the streaming service, 62 million households watched the series within its first 28 days of availability, making it Netflix's most-watch scripted limited series ever.

2. Netflix's Bridgerton was watched by more than 82 million accounts in its first month, making the soapy period drama the service's biggest series ever, Netflix said Thursday.

And in marked contrast? Only 1-2 million people rank films and television shows on IMBD, Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, which is a small percentage of that viewing audience. 82 million watched, but only 1 million reviewed it - and per the articles below? 70% were white men.
Problems with IMBD Rating System
Why you should ignore the ratings on critic sites
Don’t be tricked into thinking that movie-ranking sites give some kind of objective rating on how good a film is. All three of the above sites are skewed pretty heavily towards the opinions of men.
Take IMDb’s top-ranked film for example – The Shawshank Redemption. Its score of 9.3 is based on the votes of around 1.86 million IMDb users. 1.2 million of those votes came from men. IMDb does tweak its rankings to lessen the influence of particular demographics, but men often make up over 70 per cent of the voters for any film.
And it turns out that men tend to look much more favourably on films with more masculine themes, or male leading actors.
A look at the ratings for Sex and the City demonstrates how divided the voting audience on IMDb is. Over 29,000 men gave the film an average rating of 5.8, while 43,000 women came up with a score of 8.1. A straight-up averaging of the scores gives it a ranking of 7.4, but IMDb’s maths leaves it with a final score of 7.
IMDb breaks down the voting demographics for all of its films. Take a flick through them and you’ll see that men consistently rank masculine films higher than films that feature female leads or more traditionally female themes.
Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t come off much better. In 2015, Meryl Streep attacked the website for featuring way more male critics. Back then, there were 168 female critics on the websites’ approved list, and 760 men. A 2016 study from San Diego State University found that only 27 per cent of ‘top critics’ on the site were women.

Date: 2021-02-25 03:32 pm (UTC)There are certainly times when that's not true, as you point out. But that's why I chose Queen's Gambit as a comparable show: both would seem to appeal to a similar audience. Maybe I'm wrong about that and QG appeals more to men. But to avoid that problem entirely, Little Women is at 7.8 and Bridgerton at 7.3.
