No Title Comes to Mind...
May. 23rd, 2022 07:57 pmI'd suck at writing headlines for newspapers, wouldn't I?
Decided today that if there were more Mr. Spocks in the world than Captain Kirks, life would be a whole lot easier for me to navigate.
I mentioned this to various folks, including mother who steadfastedly ignored it. Only sci-fi coworker got the reference.
Me: You may actually understand this reference...I wish there were more Mr. Spocks than Captain Kirks in the world, it would be easier.
Co-worker: Absolutely agree. No doubt in my mind. (in short he got it). I despise Captain Kirk and even more so William Shatner.
Me: Yeah, he's a narcissitic drama queen.
Co-worker: Has to be the center of attention, it's all about him. And he's still going strong. Nimoy and him were not friends at the end, and he didn't attend Nimoy's funeral.
Me: No, Shatner was much like his character - a bit of a Diva. I liked the other Trek's better than the Original.
Co-worker: So did I. I just recently was able to see all of DS9.
Me: I had issues with that one. For one thing it was impossible to find when it was on -
Co-worker: very true and until recently not around at all.
ME: And Ron Moore likes religious allegories and I could do without it. He did it on BSG, he did it on Caprica, he did it on Outlander, and he did it on DS9.
Co-worker: There wasn't that much religious -
Me: The Bajorians
Co-worker: Oh right the Emissary -
Me: Why I disliked it. I've little tolerance for that trope. I gave up. Although I did come in and out and saw episodes from all the seasons. Even met some of the writers at a party when I first came to NYC. Not the show-runners, the episode writers.

I don't want talk about work, so I won't. I've still a bit of a brain fog, I keep forgetting things - it will be on the tip of my tongue or in my head one minute, then gone the next.
Trying not to worry about it. Could be menopausal.
Wales: You realize you're probably super immune now?
ME: No, I don't buy it.
Wales: Come on -
Me: Because of my workplace. I know too many people who have had COVID three times. I have a project delayed twice, because the attorney got it three times. Really sick with it too. He got it in fall of 2021, was out five-six weeks. Then again in May and out four-five weeks.
Wales: But you had a mild case, right? I did -
ME: What was your case like?
Wales: Oh muscle aches, dizziness, and tired for three days then I was fine. Kind of like the flu - but no cough, or cold like symptoms.
Me: Well, mine was a bad head cold, with a 99.9 fever, brain fog, shortness of breath, lost my voice, sour throat, a bit of a cough, headache, and fatigue feeling as if the wind got knocked out of me.
Wales: Oh, I didn't have that bad - no wonder you're being cautious and don't want it again.
Plus stupid work place isn't being helpful. AA had a cold today or so he says, yet he was at work with cough, runny eyes, and sneezing and feeling miserable. I had to interact with him. I did wear the KN95 throughout and kept six feet apart at least. Also found out various co-workers had COVID three times.
I'm doomed. If I die - it's the fault of my workplace.
Meanwhile, commute isn't getting much safer. According to the news this morning there was a heightened police presence on all the subways, because of another shooting. Said something about a man pacing back and forth on a subway car and randomly attacking someone. Learned later that the man randomly pulled out a gun and shot an financial analyst from Goldman Sachs in the chest - the guy was 48 years of age and going to Brunch on Sunday via the subway.
That's the fifth shooting on a train in under two months. (The others haven't really been advertised, we just see police actions. Plus the ones wielding knives.)
**
It was cooler today. In the 70s. Made commuting more pleasant. Also trains weren't as crowded. Everyone was probably afraid to take them after the shooting on the Q on Sunday. (It happened in the city, not in Brooklyn, as far as I know. I've not really looked into it. The last one happened in Brooklyn.)

I want a vacation. I'm currently day dreaming of going to the Maldives or Belize. I want to go somewhere tropical with lots of pretty things. And not that many buildings.
This is why I'm daydreaming of it...saw the below photo on Instagram or FB...

I want to go, hang out near the water, swim, snorkle, write, read, listen to music, and relax. I'm willing to go by myself at this point. Frak people.

Date: 2022-05-24 01:14 am (UTC)I liked that the original Star Trek explored various science fiction ideas but, yeah, not my favorite captain. (Recent job interview asked my favorite ST captain.)
DS9 has some good stuff. I usually enjoy Odo and I liked the Dominion arc. The religious Bajorans were the most tedious aspect indeed though at least their deities existed.

Date: 2022-05-24 02:18 am (UTC)Mine was...well it was Picard, until Discovery, now I'd say it's a toss-up between Burnham and Georgio.
I want warm clear water and soft sand, with sunshine, and trees...sigh.

Date: 2022-05-24 01:29 am (UTC)Figure out a place to go that looks like that, and give me the dates and I will go in one renting one of those cabanas with you :D

For fuck's sake - it doesn't matter if it's *covid* or a *cold* - why the hell did he show up at work in person? Stay the fuck home when you are sick. Period. Nobody wants your sickness, regardless of what it is!
EDIT: I also would do better in a world with more Spocks than Kirks!
EDIT#2: Um, that particular room on stilts is $1000/night :D $1300/night if you want dinner included!
Maybe let's find a slightly less awesome place where I don't have to sell a kidney ahahahahaha.

Oh damn. I was hoping the $382 deal bit was legit, but alas no. Actually tickets to the Winter Garden's Music Man were going for $552 a seat, which - the world is far too expensive. Who has $552 for theater tickets???
I've heard Belize is cheaper. I agree I can't afford $1000 a night either. Or $1300 a night. If we split - that's $500, eh, no. Because consider air fare, visa, etc.
Sigh dream vacations.
Maybe I should just talk my mother's cousin into giving me her time share in Hawaii, and I can drag you along to drive. ;-)

Agreed. I asked him why he hadn't called in sick. (I get it - the forms are hard to hand in and he probably doesn't have much in the way of sick time - but seriously.) Other co-worker told him to get tested again (he has 10 at home tests, and there's PCR tests in the lobby). I told him to stay him and call in sick. Frigging hell - I had to interact with him.
I also would do better in a world with more Spocks than Kirks!
Exactly.

Are you guys not able to work from home at all, as an alternative to coming into the office and sneezing and coughing all over people?

Date: 2022-05-24 12:28 pm (UTC)Sigh. We did work remotely off and on for about two years (March 19 2020 to February 14, 2022), but our idiotic head honcho decided we needed to come back into the office en mass to support those who can't work remotely and prove to our customers that it was safe to ride the trains. (The hazards of working for a big government funded transportation agency that is run by political appointees - they care more about public perception than their employees; add in unions and the fight over overtime, and well..) Right now they are trying a pilot hybrid program, IT in May, Management in June, and hopefully union employees in July, with 60% in the office.

Date: 2022-05-24 05:30 pm (UTC)I haven't seen TOS but I used to follow Shatner on Twitter and had to stop. He is definitely full of himself, or at least that's how he came off.
Oooh, pretty picture. I want to go there now too.

Date: 2022-05-25 01:00 am (UTC)Shatner is such a prima donna. I picked up on it while watching Boston Legal, and then old Trek - where he over-acted. No one else did. Just Shatner. Shatner had theater training and didn't quite get how he needed to tone everything done for television, also he thought Trek and TV was beneath him, which is kind of ironic if you think about it.
Yeah, the calm peaceful nature of the photo appeals to me. I want to go somewhere peaceful and calm, away from this noisy world.
