February Daily Meme - which I can't remember to do on a daily basis so I do it all at once...

1 – Serpent Day: How do you feel about snakes? Would you ever keep a snake as a pet?

They are fine to look at, either behind glass or far, far away, but no they are not a pet for me.

2 – Optimist Day: Do you consider yourself to be an optimist or a pessimist?

Neither. It depends on the day. Some days I'm more optimistic than others, also depends on what it is.

3 – Take a Cruise Day: Have you ever been on a cruise? If not, would you want to? Cruise ships cause major environmental damage: a large cruise ship can have a carbon footprint greater than 12,000 cars, while passengers on an Antarctic cruise can produce as much CO2 emissions on a seven-day voyage as the average European in an entire year. The industry is a major producer of waste, with the total amount of rubbish produced by a large cruise ship exceeding a ton per day. And let us not forget that they are also essentially floating germ/virus labs (even before Covid). So do you still want to take a cruise?

Kind of a judgemental and slightly self-righteous question. I wonder if the maker of this meme - realizes that all modes of transportation are pollutants and have their negative side? In varying degrees of course? Or that for some - cruises are the cheapest way of traveling? My co-workers do cruises - with families. And it's no bigger a pollutant than say an RV.

In our car obsessed society, I find comments like this to be kind of hypocritical. Do you drive? Do you fly in a plane? Greta Thornberg found planes such a huge pollutant she sailed instead. What about trains - electric and among the least, but still a major pollutant. I know this because I've hired people to remediate dangerous chemicals from the ground left behind by the diesels that still travel carrying our supplies to and throw.

Bikes are probably the least - but they are dangerous, and if not just a plain old bike (ie are motor bikes) - have their issues.

No, I've never taken a cruise. I've flirted with it, but the idea of being stuck on a boat with a thousand people isn't really something that appeals to me. And, I get sea-sick easily.

4 – Ice cream For Breakfast Day: Have you ever eaten ice cream for breakfast (or for any other meal)?

No. It's neither filling, and my stomach would have a conniption fit. I can't replace a meal with it. And I do like ice cream.

5 – World Nutella Day: Do you like Nutella? How often to you eat Nutella?

No. It has a high level of sugar in it.

6 – Chopsticks Day: Can you eat with chopsticks? If yes, how often do you use them?

Yes. But only with Asia food which is kind of designed for them.

7 – World Ballet Day: Have you ever been to a ballet performance? If not, is this something that might interest you? Have you ever had ballet lessons?

a) Yes. b) Been to numerous ballets, I love ballet. c) I took ballet as a teenager and in college. I sucked at it. But I also enjoyed it.

8 – World Opera Day: Are you an opera buff?

No. Unless it's Gilbert and Sullivan...but even then, not really.

9 – Read in the Bathtub Day: Do you read in the bath? Have you ever been reading in the bath and dropped your book into the water?

I tried a couple of times - the appeal is lost on me. I get too hot. I'm not a fan of baths. And yes, I've gotten the book wet - hence the reason that reading in a bath never works for me. Plus being overheated makes it hard to concentrate. I don't find baths relaxing at all.

10 – Umbrella Day: Umbrella or raincoat? Do you carry an umbrella or raincoat “just in case” if the weather looks doubtful, or do you take your chances? What types of umbrellas do you like? Do you keep umbrellas in different places, e.g. one at work, one in your car (if you have a car), to avoid being caught by unexpected rain?

Umbrella - actually often both. I live in NYC, an umbrella by itself is kind of useless - it rains diagonally in NYC. I carry an umbrella with my bag always.

11 – Make a Friend Day: How easy is it for you to make friends? Do you have many casual friends, or just one or two close friends?

Not easily. Both.

12 – World Marriage Day: In your opinion, is marriage an outdated institution or has it stood the test of time? Should we seek to preserve it, or might there be a better alternative for committed couples?

Marriage is a personal thing. No one should have the right to judge whether it should be eliminated, changed, defined or redefined.

13 – Clean Out Your Computer Day: When was the last time you cleaned out your fans and dusted off your motherboard? Have you looked at your graphics card to see if its cooling fan and fins are clean? For that matter, when did you last clean out or even opened the case? Or have you ever cleaned out your computer or had someone clean it out for you?

I have a laptop. And no, we don't open up the lap top and clean it.

14 – Organ Donor Day: Are you signed up/registered to be an organ donor? Do you regularly or occasionally donate blood?

Yes. No - don't like needles, and can't always find a place.

15 – World Hippo Day: How much do you know about hippos? Have you seen one outside a zoo?

Dangerous animals - most dangerous animal on the planet or in the top ten.
Stay clear. Hippos are vicious.

16 – Innovation Day: Are you the creative sort who can easily come up with new innovations, or are you better at following-up with developing other people's ideas?

Ideas yes - for stories, and I'm resourceful. Inventions - no.

17 – My Way Day: the day where you are encouraged to do whatever you want, however you want. Have you ever treated yourself to a day like this? What did you do?

Every weekend. Whatever I please or am in the mood for. Sometimes I just nap - like I did yesterday.

18 – Battery Day: How many things in your house are unusable without batteries? (If they don't run on mains power.)

Two. And only one is anywhere near a necessity.

19 – World Whale Day: Have you ever been whale watching? Tell us about it.

Yes. There's not much to tell. On a ship, watch the whales in the distance, some come close. See them spout water. It's kind of chilly. I've done it in Maine.

20 – Love Your Pet Day: Do you have pets? Tell us about them – cats, dogs, other species? How many?

No.

21 – International Mother Language Day: What is your native language? How many languages do you speak fluently or near-fluently? How many languages besides your native language have you studied?

a) English, b) one - English, c) one - French, and no I do not speak it fluently. My side of the family has no affinity for languages. We study them and can't speak or write or read them to save our lives. Between us we have studied sevent different languages? French, Spanish, Russian, Latin, German, Hawiian, Cherokee... and none stuck. People who can learn languages well take it for granted that everyone can. No, we can not. I know this for a fact and I will die on that hill and take you with me. Folks process language differently, no two people process it alike. We process the sounds, the symbols, all of it. What works for one will not necessarily work for another. Why people don't get that is beyond me.

22 – World Yoga Day: Do you do yoga? How do you benefit from it?

Yes, well kind of. I've tried it repeatedly throughout my life. But I have issues - mainly I have a curvature of the spine which makes it impossible for me to do floor exercises effectively and yoga and pilates are kind of into the whole floor exercises thing. Also six foot and big - which again yoga and pilates works best for smaller people, the ground isn't as far away. I have five feet of leg. Long arms and long legs - make yoga and pilates kind of awkward.

But, I do like the breath control, and chair exercises. Basically I do everything but the floor exercises and the crazy bends. Very important to listen to one's body in yoga, and ignore other people, or you could seriously injure yourself. People have a tendency to think if they can do it, you can - all evidence to the contrary. And feel the need to bully - if you run into a bully yoga instructor? That's not yoga.

23 – Digital Learning Day: What are the benefits of digital learning compared to other methods of learning? What are the disadvantages?

Cheaper. I don't like watching people talking to me on camera or lecturing, it irritates me. I am an interactive learner, lecture - quiz method is kind of lost on me. I need to figure it out on my own and then get told in person what worked and what didn't and why. Or have class discussion and give and take on it. Watching someone on youtube or on some online class lecture me and show me how, then try to copy them - isn't going to work for me. I'll go to sleep, my attention will wander, I'll do something else.

My guess is this is what happened with my niece and various others? She was all gung-ho on education and wanted to learn, then the pandemic happened and she went a year with online or zoom courses, and lost interest. It bored her. Education works better when it is interactive.

<b24 – International I Hate Coriander Day: Do you love or hate coriander? If you don't like it, what don't you like about it?

Why? Who did this meme? Clearly it's someone who does a lot of cooking? And hasn't figured out that they don't have to use spices they hate?

I had a discussion with co-worker recently about how her family and friends couldn't figure out how not to use the spice annatto. And I thought, why? I'd never heard of it, and don't own any. I never use it. I decided it was a cultural thing. Coriander must be a cultural thing too?

I wonder about people. I truly do. They get so worked up about trivial things. If someone you care about is allergic to or hates a spice - don't use the spice.

25 – Real Bread Week: Real bread refers to any type of bread that has been made without the use of processing aids or any other additives and includes any type of additive-free bread (e.g. pita, paratha, tortilla, oatcakes, roti, bagels, etc.). Do you, or have you ever, made bread? Do you use a bread maker? If you always buy rather than make bread, do you look for bread that at least claims to be additive-free, made from organic flour, etc.?

Definitely a foodie did this meme. Or a cook.

I don't eat bread. I can't have grains. Or much in the way of carbs. Have I ever made it? Yes. Have I used a bread maker? No. As to the rest? When I made it - it was organic, additive free, and from almond flour. And still didn't agree that well - probably the yeast.

26 – Carpe Diem Day: Are you good at seizing the day? If not, what holds you back?

Depends on the day. My mood. And how well I slept the night before. Of late? Not that well.

27 – Pokemon Day: Are you or is anybody in your family a Pokemon fanatic?

No.

28 – Tooth Fairy Day: Did the tooth fairy visit you whenever one of your baby teeth fell out? If you have children, did/do you have the tooth fairy visit them when they lose teeth? Why or why not?

Yes. (the second part of the question is not applicable).

</cut>

Well that was easy. If a tad negative. Just put the word No for about 75% of the questions. Also, it's a weird meme. For one thing, someone out there hates coriander. No clue why.

If by coriander they mean the herb - green coriander/cilantro - rather than the spice, it does seem to be the Marmite of herbs, or possibly contains chemicals that taste awful to some people but not others.

I heard it tastes like soap to some people? I have a friend who’s affected that way. In the U.K. we call the herb and the spice coriander so if a British person wrote that it would mean that.

To some people - myself included - fresh (leafy) coriander tastes like soap, and ruins anything it's mixed with. This is a genetic trait. However, I like the ground coriander spice.
