1. My difficulty with fandom regardless of the fandom - is I don't care if the characters are happy. They aren't real. I just want a good story. Happy characters is often boring story. Be nice if they ended happy - but I just want a good story arc. Fandom seems to only care about their favorite characters. The other thing fandom only seems to care about is if the series espouses their own worldview and preaches it. If I wanted a sermon - I'd go to church. I don't like to be preached to. All I care about is a story - and a good story shouldn't be put a political message first, that's not story, that's allegory. I find allegorical writing boring.
2. I did get laundry done on my day off. Had the equivalent of four heavy loads. Actually more like five - but had one huge washer - for the the towels and sheets.
Split the clothes among three smaller washers. And used three dryers.
I was down there by 6am, having gotten up at 5:45 am. Also made my bed up clean, then proceeded to go to sleep during...VoX Machina. I think I slept for an hour - resulting in grogginess all day.
Game plan tomorrow - is to go to a museum or take a long walk. We'll see if I make it? I'm lazy. I could go to a beach...but I don't really like sand. And my idea of beach going is walk it, play in water, go home. Bro has gone to Martha's Vineyard again. We appear to be taking turns. I went in 2015 and 2019. He's going in 2022 and 2023.
I'm feeling very lazy and uninspired at the moment - due to lack of sleep. Also I have to make dinner - and not enthused.
3. I finished Vox Machina finally - it's good. Just two seasons at the moment. Onto the Witcher - which I have to watch from the beginning again, because I can't remember it. I'm also considering hunting down a English version of Cowboy Bebop animated series. (I don't want to see the live action version.)
Vox Machina is an adult fantasy anime - with a heavy Dungeons and Dragons vibe. I have a feeling I may have enjoyed that game in another life.

4. Ah, finally found it again...Buffy and Spike find their Happy Ending in the Last Slayer Comics but with a Dark Twist.
Fans who adore the pairing of Spike and Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be glad to know they have a happy ending — but one with a dark twist. In a post-apocalyptic London overrun by vampires, an elderly Buffy starts mentoring the true last Vampire Slayer, Thessaly, daughter of Willow and Tara. As her Watcher, Buffy rekindles her former romance with Spike, who also serves as Thessaly's Watcher.
These events, fully explored in a prior miniseries, lead into into BOOM! Studios' latest Buffy-starring ongoing, which begins with Buffy: The Last Vampire Slayer #1 by Casey Gilley, Oriol Roig, Gloria Martinelli, and Ed Dukeshire. While serving as co-Watchers to Thessaly, Buffy and Spike can finally be a couple without distractions.
Spike Supporting Buffy Side by Side

BOOM took over from Dark Horse, and is sans the misogynistic Scott Allie, Joss Whedon, et all - so what they did? Reboot the verse, and did it sans the rapes, attempted rapes, and all the misogynistic tendencies. In this verse, Buffy ends up with Spike, in a healthy relationship of equals no less, and no sexual violence. Or references to it. In this verse, it didn't happen. In this verse, Tara and Willow ended up together. Buffy married Angel, he walked out on her, and they got divorced twenty years ago. Now, she's in her fifties and with Spike. They are co-watchers to Thess, Willow and Tara's kid, after Willow and Tara are killed. It's actually a good comic. I like it better than the Dark Horse comics, better art, and better writing.
5. The X-men comics have reinvented my favorite female character again - it's kind of where I got my fandom internet name from...

This is basically Kitty Pryde of the X-men, who can phase through and disrupt technology, along with walls, is wickedly smart, and a ninja.
She goes by the nickname "Shadowkat". It was originally shadowcat in the old comics, but finally it's correct, Shadowkat. People have been misspelling my pseudonym forever. It's annoying, but I handwave.
Actually they always misspell my real name as well or use the wrong version or shorten it. My mother has the same problem with her name. So whenever someone claims that people are mispronouncing or misspelling their name because of a racial or ethnic basis? I laugh at them. Folks, no. I've had my name misspelled, mispronounced and shortened since I can remember, and I'm sorry - it has zip to do with racial basis. And mine is easy to pronounce and spell - it's a common name.
I mispronounce names all the time - because of dyslexia and audio dyslexia.
There's always another explanation. Don't make stupid assumptions based on your own bias and fears.
6. They are torturing my other favorite character in the X-men comics. Actually I have a lot of fav's in the X-men comics - it's why I read them. I have a 100 characters in those comics that I adore.
But, hey, at least they didn't kill him. So there's that. No instead they've sewn his eyes shut, and broken his back.
They allegedly killed off a bunch of characters, but no one in the fandom believes they are dead. (It's comic books - no one dies permanently in comics. They just die for a while.) Also two of them are the stars of their own miniseries in the fall. Iceman has his own miniseries, and so does Jean Grey - and both were killed rather graphically in the comics. Jean was reduced to a skeleton, and Bobby was melted down to one. Then they come out with cover solicitations for mini-series - and these are shown before they are allegedly killed off. (Kind of reminds me of when Buffy killed off Spike, only to have the WB advertise his return on Angel for the fall. season, around the same time.)
If it's a soap, a comic, or a supernatural soap - don't count on the death's lasting long. They'll come back if the writers want them too, and the actors are available and/or can be re-cast. If they aren't available and can't be recast, and its not a comic book or animated series? Sorry they are dead. Blame the pesky actor.
6. Almost done with Blood Sweat and Chrome - Mad Max Fury Road - despite what you may think - I'm not a fan nor obsessed with the film in any way. I saw it once. Thought it was a good, if insanely violent and at times cringe-inducing action film, and that was it. I just like books about movie making.
Anyhow, there's a lot of congratulating each other in this book. Which is annoying. Yes, I know you enjoyed making the film and did a good job, stop telling me how brilliant you all are - it was a movie, it's not developing a cure for cancer or ensuring people in wheelchairs can take the train to and from work. It's just an insanely violent and highly expensive movie. Get over yourselves already. That's the one draw-back of these books - they like to brag a bit too much. Notice it in film and television commentary as well. I swear the movie and television business attracts a lot of folks who require constant validation and self-promotion.
However...it is interesting. One of the reasons it's such a good action film, and among the best ever made (depending on one's point of view - let's face it this is all very subjective), okay most realist action films ever made - is that they didn't us any CGI. It's all real stunts. The stunts are real. Choreographed, and they created and made the vehicles. They actually filmed in the Namibia Desert and in sand storms. No blue screens. No CGI. No F/X. The film is a hyper-realistic dystopian action adventure. The car chases have stunt men and actors driving the cars. Charlize Theron is driving that truck. Nick Hoult is strapped underneath a car. Tom Hardy is strapped in front of one.
That's a hard film to shoot. It's also weirdly feminist. They actually asked Eve Einsler, the writer of the Vagina Monologues, to consult and help the women get into character about being sex slaves and the trauma involved regarding that.
Miller's intent with this film was to hand the reigns of the action genre to Furiosa from Mad Max. She's the lead of a gritty, dystopian, action flick.
Also, it wasn't a toxic set - it was a collaborative one. So it worked better. They had safe guards in place.
And they went out of their way to get good lesser known actors to play these roles. Many were Australian and British actors. Some were from previous Mad Max films or had worked with Miller previously.

Date: 2023-08-08 12:59 am (UTC)Not just for the sake of romance. Otherwise it becomes boring.
The happy ending has to be "earned" - and it should be open-ended to truly work. I kind of like Queen Charlotte on Netflix - because it had that feeling to it. It can be done well. I tend to leave my stories more open-ended, because it feels more true somehow.
