Feb. 25th, 2011 11:09 pmHee. Just grabbed the latest Kim Harrison, Pale Demon, which according to the starred reviews at Amazon is the best one yet - it's the Great American Road Trip with a witch, an elf, and a pixy through a world re-worked by magic. Harrison does witches, elves, and pixies better than anyone else out there - that's her forte. Most people write them in a rather traditional fashion, Harrison plays with the trope a bit. Jenks, Trenton, and Rachel are like characters out of a Elmore Leonard story except thrown into a fantasy by a female writer.
I'm half-watching Grey's Anatomy, which is low on the Cristina and high on the Meredith and Lexie lately. But suddenly we have her - yay. I love Cristina. Her line last week?
Meredith: If you are my godmother, and Derek or I die, you are more likely to become a parent. But with Callie's kid - you have to wait for three people to die to get to the kid.
Cristina: Wait, just so we get this straight. There's no me taking care of any children. That's what boarding schools are for.
LOL!
This week.
Owen: Well, I figure you will figure out eventually that there is more to your life than your career and you will want kids one day and your career is secondary to that, that you want more.
Cristina (who is in her 30s): So you think what, I'm going to grow up and decide surgery and the career I've committed to isn't that important? And change? Uh no.
[ETA: decided not in the mood for Grey's, gave up, and watched Big Bang Theory instead - which had me cackling with laughter. Mr. Sunshine now - but it's not cutting it. Still not funny and still trying too hard. Perry seems to be trying to oversell the laughs, as if he's saying to the audience - see this is Funny! Uh no. If you have to "sell" it, it's really not. Saw Being Erica earlier - weak episode that centered on Adam. Best part was the line - if we are dissatisfied with our life can we change it? Well, yeah, but it takes work. Unless of course you are a character in a tv series then everything sort of pops into your path as if by magic. Making me sort of wish I lived inside a tv series. ]
I'm looking forward to the Kim Harrison novel that I just bought via Kindle (took five minutes and was cheaper than the hardback version via Amazon and the one via B&N, plus no waiting). I'll have to wait until June 26th for the Dresden novel. What's with that? Usually Butcher's newest books come out in March. Why the six month wait? Is it because we got Side Jobs in the fall? With the Kindle - I no longer have to splurge on the hardback book and lug it around with me, then have it take up room that I don't have on my bookshelf. (I'm not patient enough to wait for these books to come out in paperback - it's hard enough waiting for the next one to come out in hardcover. They are the only series books that I do this on at the moment. I know why - they are genre blenders. And I adore genre blenders. They also blend four of my favorite genre's into one neat package. Mystery/Fantasy(or in case of Harrison Sci-Fantasy)/Noir/ and Romance. Genre blenders are the best. And these are character motivated ones, where the characters keep evolving and their relationships change over the progression of the series. You have to read all the books. I don't like books where characters don't evolve and change or learn something new about themselves or their journey. Straight paint-by numbers mystery novels bore me. Give me a good emotional character arc and a fun plot and I'm there. )
