1. In case I don't get the chance later, although no idea why..."HAPPY NEW YEAR's EVERYONE" - Here's hoping 2012 treats everyone even better than 2011! (And the whole fuss and bother about the Mayan Calendar coming to an end merely means the Mayans just didn't think they'd be around that long. (ie. they were just a tad short-sighted. Happens to the best of us.) )

2. Bought the New American Heritage Dictionary - 5th Edition - in hard back. Which comes with a free app. Only one small problem - I can't access the bloody thing, because my ipad screwed up my email address. I complained to the ptb (enfour - the people who did the app, and houton mifflin...so we shall see.).

3. During my 1 and a half walk - which resulted in buying groceries (have decided to make myself a quiche tonight), hard cider, gluten-free beer, and the extremely heavy aforementioned book - so that I was walking with the equivalent of 20 pound weights in each hand for ten blocks - I passed the North Shore Animal Shelter Van - with the kitties and puppies. My heart ached for the kitties. But playing Sims...has made me realize that I do not want a kitty, even if my landlord permitted it (he doesn't - the lease states no pets.) Too high maintenance. I have enough problems with the Sims, I keep forgetting their needs or that they exist. This is why I don't have house-plants. I can never remember when I watered them last. (I've been known to kill a cactus.)

An aside? The grocery store was packed. And the news stated people were lining up in Times Square at 10 am this morning. (Okay, keep in mind that you can't bring a back-pack or alcohol into Times Square.) This puzzles me. What are they going to do from 10-12 midnight? There's no seats. No potties to speak of. No food or water. And it's not that warm. Are they crazy??? Folks watching the ball drop in the middle of the street in Times Square on Live TV is not that interesting.
At any rate...this time of year always makes me very very happy that I live in Brooklyn and not Manhattan. Been there, done that. Brooklyn is so much easier.

4. Co-worker and I were discussing reading and television interests.

Co-worker: My favorite Sci-Fi series ended after only 13 episodes...has never been rebroadcast, but it did introduce me to the books.
Me: What was it?
Co-worker: The Dresden Files
Me: Ooooh! That was mine too. I own that on DVD. I don't know why it didn't take off. Probably because the people reading the books had issues with it not following the books closely enough - to watch? (shrug) But I love the books. (We have a 15 minute discussion about the books and our mutual love of the tv series Merlin. He also rec's Eragon to me, stating that I need to read it - it's as good as Harry Potter and has Dragons!).
Co-worker: There's so much negativity in the newspapers...and news, that I read mainly to escape - fantasy works best.
Me: Yes, I don't want a porterhouse steak in a book or a meal, I want dessert. Same with TV right now - I want dessert not a three course meal. I think it has a lot to do with what you do during the day - or work. If work is intellectually stimulating and a three course meal in of itself, plus has levels of frustration and negativity - for entertainment, you want dessert, something fun.
After all can't digest two porterhouse steaks in a row.
Co-worker (who manages to follow my food analogy with no difficulty whatsoever nods in agreement):
I think that may be true. Definitely want dessert in my reading and tv watching.

This is so true for me. pretty much just expanding on the above )

5. Do you have a relative that everyone compares you too? Or at least some people do? Mine was my Aunt Audrey, who died back in 2000 (around the time The Body aired on Buffy, which may explain why I always bawl and sob whenever I watch that episode.) We are alike in some ways, both consummate book-a-philes, both letter writers, both writers...and both somewhat introverted and extremely close to our parents. But that's where the similarities end. Audrey hated change. I actually love change. She was afraid of it. I fear the lack of it - I'm more afraid of being stagnant, of no change. I need change. It comforts me. The knowledge that everything will change in time, people, things, places, relationships, the seasons. No year is the same. Every relationship evolves. All things are temporary. The only constant is change. So there's always the hope things will improve and get better. And they often do.

6. Was thinking about what turns me on in stories. Characters who appear to be one thing, but turn out to be something else. It's why I got obsessed with Buffy - because literally every character on that series had a secret side to them, a side we didn't see. They were one thing on the surface and something else underneath. Xander is the the harmless, sensitive, geek - then in the Pack - we see the suave bully, the nasty side. Or Spike is the nasty, bully, evil vampire, then with Dru and later Buffy - we see the fool for love, the hopeless romantic, the reluctant hero, the nurturer.
That duality fascinates me. It's also why I'm loving Once Upon a Time, Vampire Diaries, Game of Thrones (Jamie Lannister and Tyrion Lannister are just two examples of the dual natures of those characters), Doctor Who, and to a degree Fringe. It's why I got into the Wire. I need that in a story for it to work for me.

Off to make Quiche Lorraine. Here's the recipe:

Although I'm making it with a gluten free pie crust, since I don't own a quiche pan.

The Quiche turned out perfectly, flaky crust via Gillian's Gluten free, Dairy Free, Nut Free...and a great quiche. I halved the recipe.

Rather charming...the song leading into the Ball Drop in NY is Cee Lo Green singing John Lennon's "Imagine". A song that I adore.

HaPPY NEW YEAR's FROM New York City! And big welcome to 2012.

I hear lots of fireworks going off around me. This city takes New Year's seriously.
