1. Still debating the "dresser issue". It's currently between one that has been marked down, and one at the original price. The one that has been marked down is much cheaper - but I don't know. I'm admittedly procrastinating because I don't know what to do with the one I currently have - and worrying about spatial issues. (I've told you all that I have no real depth perception, right? I honestly can't tell how big things are in spaces or spatial distribution. And I suck at measurements. Although pretty certain both will fit.
I hate buying furniture. I avoid it like the plague, and have a tendency to buy it far too cheap. I finally splurged and have a decent arm chair, coffee table and tv stand. Also the file cabinet/side table and night stand are nothing to sneeze at. That said? My gothic cabinet craft dresser has lasted over twenty years.
2. It was only a matter of time but..A US Court has ruled that AI Generated Art Cannot Be Copyrighted. I figured that would happen.
A work of art created by artificial intelligence without any human input cannot be copyrighted under U.S. law, a U.S. court in Washington, D.C., has ruled.
Only works with human authors can receive copyrights, U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell said on Friday, affirming the Copyright Office's rejection of an application filed by computer scientist Stephen Thaler on behalf of his DABUS system.
The Friday decision follows losses for Thaler on bids for U.S. patents covering inventions he said were created by DABUS, short for Device for the Autonomous Bootstrapping of Unified Sentience.
Thaler has also applied for DABUS-generated patents in other countries including the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia and Saudi Arabia with limited success.
Thaler's attorney, Ryan Abbott, on Monday said that he and his client strongly disagree with the decision and will appeal. The Copyright Office in a statement on Monday said it "believes the court reached the correct result."
The fast-growing field of generative AI has raised novel intellectual property issues. The Copyright Office has also rejected an artist's bid for copyrights on images generated through the AI system Midjourney despite the artist's argument that the system was part of their creative process.
3. Okay transphobia doesn't make sense to me, any more than homophobia does. But even if it did? This is just plain dumb. Trans women banned from women's chess tournaments. Why can't they have the chess tournaments be non-gender specific? It's chess. It's not soccer or gymnastics or swimming. It is chess. A cerebral sport. You can play it without ever seeing your opponent or knowing what they look like. This makes no sense. People are stupid.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) says it is temporarily banning transgender women from competing in its women's events.
The FIDE said individual cases would require "further analysis" and that a decision could take up to two years.
The move has been criticised by some players and enthusiasts.
Many sports governing bodies have been working on policies towards transgender athletes, but chess does not involve comparable levels of physical activity.
However the FIDE told the BBC it wanted to analyse the impact of these policies and did not want to rush this process.
"The transgender legislation is rapidly developing in many countries and many sport bodies are adopting their own policies," it said.
"FIDE will be monitoring these developments and see how we can apply them to the world of chess. Two years is a scope of sight that seemed reasonable for the thorough analyses of such developments."
It added that transgender players could still compete in the open section of its tournaments.
4. New TV Shows..as if we needed any more. Part of the reason the television writers strike and actors strike is lasting forever...is well, the studios don't exactly require more content.
Co-worker: Oh, I wanted to talk to you.
Me: About?
Co-worker: Fiske.
Me: Fiske? As in the name Fiske? (I have a character in a book that I published named Fiske - so I admittedly intrigued and confused at the same time.)
Co-worker: It's a tv show about a lawyer named Fiske -
Me: male lawyer?
Co-worker: No female.
Me: Where?
Co-worker: On Netflix. Also there's Almost Australia, both are Australian shows, and blah blah, and blah blah blah. (I can't for the life of me remember the names of the other two television shows he threw at me which are also Australian.)
Me: Where do you find these obscure television series that you feel the need to thrust at me?
Co-worker: (shrugs) Just do.
Apparently it exists - and first popped up on ABC.. It's an Australian Comedy Series called Fisk. Co-worker aka Book Buddy/Sci-Fi Coworker, who is 73 with no plans to retire any time soon...loves to throw comedies at me, even though he knows I don't like comedies. LOL!

I did that for the freezer - I put "stuff" in the space so that I could sort of visualize how much it was going to loom at me in the garage LOL

Date: 2023-08-23 09:31 pm (UTC)I just need to find my metal tape measure - all I can find is the one I use for measuring my waist - or the sewing tape measure. (Not that I sew.)
Part of it is the expense. I'm debating between cheap Wayfair dressers (which most likely won't last long) and expensive Pottery Barn dressers (which will). But damn, everything including my electric bill and rent has gone up in price this year.
The good news is I got a raise over the pandemic. But damn.

Date: 2023-08-23 01:32 pm (UTC)I think in general it is silly making a fuss about trans women because there are not that many of them and plenty of cis women have high testosterone, look at Serena Williams for heaven's sake.
But chess! I really don't get that.
