For the past 10 years, I've had the following conversation:

ME: I wrote a book.
Friend: Oh, what's it about?
Me: well, uh, hmmm......

So, now that I approved the marketing copy for my book...here's the back cover description, which hopefully will answer everyone's questions regarding what my book is about.

"Unable to find work, romantically challenged, and with only her “net buds,” the anonymous members of her TV series fan discussion boards to turn to, Caddy is ready to call it quits. She has the gun her father gave her for protection, but there’s one small problem: she has no idea how to use it.

Fiske, a private investigator who changed his identity from Hispanic to Londoner, complete with a fake British accent, notices Caddy’s nervousness on the subway and confronts her as she’s attempting to end her life.

Hope, an identity thief and embezzler who collects Loony Tunes action figures, is one of Caddy’s net buds, a fellow obsessed fan of the wildly popular TV show Spywitch. She’s also the subject of Fiske’s current investigation.

Dark humor, cynical satire, and quirky characters drive this ultimately uplifting tale reminding us to make the most of our time here on earth."

See? Not easy to describe and sort of off the beaten track. Been a little wary of self-publishing it - because as you can see, it's incredibly irreverent and dark humor.

So, I asked my brother for marketing advice on my book.

His response?

" If you don't have a following, I think it's unlikely that your book is going to do well, so either figure out how to get a bunch of people to buy it, or start building a following today.”

This is obviously the trickiest, having thousands of contacts to promote it to directly. If you don’t have them find someone who does (do you know Oprah?). Essentially public relations - traditional reviews or social media recommendations - to get the word out. Otherwise it’s buying traffic through Google adwords.

Well, I suppose I have this blog. Although I don't know if I have a following or not.
It's hard to tell. According to my profile, 199 people have friended me. But half of those have either left LJ, are dead (seriously, they are dead, gone from this world),
or not really following it.

Also, of the group that is following - would you buy my book? I don't know. I have to admit I was surprised anyone read my Buffy meta.
