1. Finished watching Vampire Diaries -- which wasn't quite as entertaining this season as previous seasons. Although, I rather like the Damon, Enzo, Bonnie dynamic. Those three actors are rather charming. Or maybe they just have more interesting characters? For some reason the writers of these types of series struggle with good upstanding characters? Making them a bit too sanctimonious to be stomached. Anyhow, I liked the twist at the end, where Damon and Enzo, who sort of knew what was in the vault, and inadvertently set it free in order to save the life of their friend, end up being twisted into serial killers by it. Poor Bonnie, indeed, considering they are her dearest friends and they got twisted saving her life.

2. Also finished up Call the Midwife which was sort of lack-lustra this season. I'm not sure if the story is being spread too thin or if the writers are focusing far too much on social issues and not enough on characters? Some bits felt a bit contrived, and it lacked the lightness and humor of previous seasons. I missed Chummy, who has disappeared from the cast. And the mouthy nun, who has been killed off. Slow in places and overly melodramatic in others, not to mention a tearjerker each week - drug the season down a bit. I'll watch next season, most likely. Since I'm invested in various characters...but am rapidly losing interest.

3. Up next? I think The Night Manager - I have all six episodes saved. And everyone I know who has seen it, raves about it. It got mixed reviews from various US television critics, but I have not been seeing eye-to-eye with US Television critics for quite some time now.

4. Almost done with the latest Patricia Briggs novel, which was surprisingly better than her last two entries. Considering there's an annoying new character, Adam's ex-wife, Christy, I had low expectations. But the writer managed to further develop Honey as a counter-point, bring in Lucia, and
a half-brother for Mercy. These additions have helped expand the universe and develop existing characters further. Also, I've found that I can ignore the Christy subplot for the most part.
The mythology is more on target, and far more interesting than the previous entry. And the villain more complex. Methinks the writer is better off staying away from the vampires. It's hard to write vampires or zombies for that matter well any longer, both have been overdone.

I know I should branch out and read something other than urban fantasy. But alas, I'm in a mood. So binging I am. It also makes great subway fair. Page-turners or thrillers often do. It's rather hard to read literary novels on the subway, too many distractions. I think that's why people like these sort of books - the fast reads, that you can read quickly, forget in a week or less. They take up no brain space, provide a pleasurable distraction, and you don't have to think too hard. Unfortunately, I don't write quick reads, so...it doesn't work for me as a writer. I don't necessarily read what I write.

5. I think it wants to rain. The air is heavy and dark. Children screaming and playing in the distance, so I'm sort of rooting for it to rain...for them to fall silent. Oh they have, never mind.
But it is heavy, the air, with water. As if the sky desperately has to pee. I just wish it would. The pressure of it is making me edgy.
