Y2/D295 - Remote
Jan. 5th, 2022 05:00 pmWorked remote today - and I found myself constantly nibbling, so apparently I eat less at work. Good to know. I also get more exercise going to and from work and at work - I walk around more. Things are further away. And the computer screen is bigger - and it is easier to do stuff. OTOH, I like rolling out of bed, taking a shower, slowly making oatmeal, meditating, watching the news, and signing in, without rushing off to the train and worrying about getting in on time - or worse waiting forever for the subway to come and hoping for a seat. Instead, I can just sign off, call Mom, do exercises, and write on this thing. If I could teleport to and from work, problem solved. There could be a magical portal - I walk from my apartment to my office merely by walking through a doorway.
So, I have mixed feelings about the whole remote working gig. Which means, I'm kind of relieved crazy workplace has taken the decision out of my hands. I get to come in every other day with the rest of my co-workers. I see roughly half of them, the other half, I do not see.
This is a long way of stating that crazy workplace (to the surprise of absolutely no one) extended the telework from home (aka in-person and remote) hybrid schedule from January 15 to January 31. I personally think they should extend it to March 31 and be done with it. But management continues to bewilder me.

This country calls people heroes in order to use them. We don't compensate them right or listen to what they actually need. We just chew them up and spit them out and then look for another hero with more flavor.
Bought more masks from this site:
Project N95 - which wasn't too pricey.
I've a collection of masks - from cloth to surgical to KN95 to KF94, and soon N95. I switched from the cloth to the KN95 and KF94 towards the end of 2021, when I began going back into the office.

Stay indoors. But also return in person. Wear a mask. Not that one. The expensive one, that you can’t find. Take rapid tests. Which you also can’t find. But if you find them, don’t buy them. Rapid tests don’t work. You need PCR. There are zero appointments in your area.
And all the tweets after it...we're clearly in this together. And I've decided there are three viruses going around - 1) the pandemic, 2) misinformation, 3) hate - and I've no clue which will succeed in taking us all out, it's kind of up in the air at the moment.

Did exercises after work - I'm stiff. Need to do these every other day, and increase as needed. Far too stiff for my own good.
Via the comic fandom, aka scans daily, I found this quote from comic show-runner Jonathan Hickman, where he in turn quotes Vince Gilligan about his writing process...
Then I saw Vince Gilligan (uh, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, X-Files) give an interview where he explained this process [...] Anyway, the process was basically him talking about how, instead of introducing new concepts and characters to your stories with new backstories and unrelated, or parallel, motivations, the thing you should do is ‘mine your own continuity.’ By that, he meant that when you introduce a giant meteor to your story -- that meteor’s history doesn’t begin with it crashing into the planet. It’s not just an inciting incident, and it’s not just a rock (it’s not just a gun, it’s not just a new bad guy, it’s not just a new love interest, it’s not just a cool car, etc, etc) -- it has to have a purpose. And its history should reflect the history of the story you’re telling.
Found that quote to be interesting from a writing perspective. Also, Gilligan is one of the best television plotters out there - his plots tend to be character driven and tighter than most.

As a writer, we cannot write a book to account for every individual reader engagement (nor should we), but I think there's something to be said for having one ideal reader avatar in your mind--how will that person read this? What will their experience be?
I agree.

Story isn't just character + plot, it's character + plot + reader context. There have been lots of conversations around this, especially with historical romance and how it's written in a modern context for a modern reader, but it's true for all genres.

Every book exists slightly differently for each reader.
But as someone who generally speaking doesn't pick up angsty books, but I'm gravitating to them now for inexplicable reasons, this is fascinating to me.Every book exists slightly differently for ME at different times!
I was particularly amused by the statement on Writer Twitter - that every writer the poster knows, prefers to daydream what happens next in their book as opposed to writing it. Yep. It's so much easier to daydream the story in my head. It works better in my head - I can hear the voices, see the scene, feel it, on the page I have to use words.
And the motivational statements?
"Follow your passion to find your purpose."
ME: What if you don't have a passion? Or one that leads easily to a purpose?
"IF you keep at it, you can accomplish your dreams..."
Me: It's not drive that is the problem, it's laziness. I would rather play around writing on social media, watch television, etc than take time out to work on my novel after work each day.

Cough is better. Still hoarse, but when I talk there's no frog in my throat. Still no results on Saliva PCR test that I took at work. I keep buying masks. I swear, I've probably spend over $400 on masks these past two years. Plus all the useless masks crazy org gives me. They gave us a thin cloth mask advertising crazy org the other day.
Me: I can't wear this - it won't protect me. What's the point?
Manager handing them out: I think it's just for show or nostalgia purposes, like a keepsake.
Me: I don't understand this organization.
Manager: I agree - so much money wasted.

Soap Twitter: Male characters are all trash and deserve to be bullied!
ME:Well except for Spike.( But that’s an old fandom and not soap. So we’re good.)
Spike was that rare character that I really didn't care what he did or to whom...I forgave all. I was less forgiving of fans who hated him. I kept wanting to smack them. It's gotten better now, I no longer care. I moved on for the most part.
Soap Twitter is all a Twitter because they killed off Luke or allegedly killed off Luke - offscreen (he was a causality of the tragic cable car accident in Austria). EW was hilarious - it thinks Luke and Laura are still romantically involved, and would have to continue in the afterlife. Uhm no, they broke up over two decades ago, and moved on with other (more appropriate) people.

It was cold and rainy, so I did not venture outside. Tomorrow supposed to be Sunny for my commute to and from work.
