Music and Moth infestations..
Jun. 29th, 2022 06:28 pm1. Stranger Things has managed to bring a whole new group of fans to the music of Kate Bush (who was popular in the 1980s). Via "Max's Signature Song" - Here's an interview with the iconic singer regarding the song and Stranger Things which she watches.
My brother introduced me to Kate Bush via a mixed tape. He made me mixed tapes when I was in college, from various records that he owned.
Snippet from the Kate Bush interview:
“They’ve really put it in a very special place, and I think music is very special. It’s different from all other art forms, isn’t it, in a way. All art forms sit in their own space, but music has a way of touching people.”
The singer also added that while the 80s was a “great time”, she is excited by the evolution of technology and the new generation’s discovery of the track.
“Incredible things are happening; technology is progressing at this incredible rate that’s pretty overwhelming. There are positive things; you just have to look a bit harder to find them at the moment, I think.”
I actually did see Kate Bush in Concert - unexpectedly. She joined Peter Gabriele's tour in 1987 at Wembley Stadium.
2. I was feeling depressed on the commute home today - the train had stalled at Fort Hamilton Parkway, one stop away, and I found myself crying.
Too many depressing conversations in one week, on top of the barrage of bad news, and various frustrations, I suspect?
At any rate - this song, for some reason or other made me feel better?

3. Got off the phone with mother, who regaled me about various topics including...
Mother: How are you?
ME: Better now. But I got depressed. Feeling kind of isolated and alone of late. Can't figure out how to get together with the few friends I have, and co-workers are unhappy.
Mother: Some good news! Your niece has arrived home - she arrived today. She's back home now.
ME: Wait - I thought she was still in Greece?
Mother: They went to Santorino, Greece then flew to the UK, and he went back to Virginia and she went back to NY. (Pause) Also.. Your poor brother has been living a nightmare for the last four-five days now. They came home to their house infested with moths.
Me: Moths?
Mother: They think your niece brought the larva in via something she bought in the UK or brought over from Europe. She's been buying stuff in Thrift shops and other places..and she just dumped it then left again, and then they left shortly after she did..they've been cleaning everything. Top to bottom. Deep cleaning. Throwing stuff out. Taking it to industrial laundramats to clean. Using cloth insecticides.
Me: Okay...I think I know, but what do moths do?
Mother: Eat things - clothing, linens, wool, rugs...and they lay thousands of eggs, the larva eats the cloth..
Me: Oh My God.
Mother: See, doesn't that make you feel better? You said you wanted to hear some bad news about your brother.
[And people wonder where my brother and I get our morbid sense of humor from.]
My sisterinlaw is a fashion designer, and into textiles. She brought back rugs and textiles from Turkey. They were storing rugs in their loft space. Their sofas have wool cushions. At least most of her fabric is in the barn and niece's stuff never made it into the barn. Nor did it get into the master bedroom which is cut off and below the rest of the house.
But according to mother it took all day for my brother to clean one room.
Dear god.
