1. I'm trying "Duck Duck Go" as a browser, but I don't know, Google may be better? I'm doing it because Google tracks what you search and has an embedded marketing logarithm, while Duck Duck Go doesn't. (It's why Duck Duck Go is the only browser people could use to search the Dark Net - not that I would - I avoid that like the plague.)
2. The Republicans voted in a new Speaker of the House finally.
Mother: We have a new Speaker.
Me: So I've heard, who is he?
Mother: Mike something or other. His fellow Republicans had to Google him to figure out who he is - he's that obscure. No one knows him.
Me: Oh that's hilarious.
Mother: He is a Trump supporter - but they all have to say that.
Me: Sigh.
Honestly, I think at this point you'd have to be an idiot to vote for a Republican - any Republican. Better off voting Independent or Democrat. That party is just an embarrassment to humanity. They need to be disbanded and thrown out like the Federalists were.
The Republican Party (aka the party with the slogan - Make America Great Again) has ironically made America look stupid and a laughingstock to the rest of the world. Kudos.
3. Working my way through Alix E. Harrow's Starling House - which is interesting. Much like "The Devil Takes You Home" - it features a down-on-your luck Latino, this go around the protagonist is female. And has a little brother she's supporting. Her mother is dead, and her father is non-existent. She lives in a Motel, free in exchange for cleaning it, with her little brother - who she takes care of and is trying to get into college.
Having always been obsessed with the town's haunted house, Starling House, she manages to get the proprietor or current inhabitant, Arthur Starling, who looks a bit like a crow disguised as a man, to pay her to clean it.
Arthur is tall, gangly, unattractive, and has self-inflicted tattoos all over him, much like various areas of the house.
I like haunted houses. The Haunted House trope is my favorite horror trope.
I also like ghost stories. That style of horror works for me.
I don't like zombie stories - which is most likely why The Devil Takes You Home didn't work for me as well as it may have for others?
4. The reviews of "The Killers of the Flower Moon" flick per Twitter and Blue Sky, are suggesting that one may want to prepare oneself for the brutal storyline about a bunch of greedy men killing and abusing women, specifically Native American women. (I still recommend that everyone read or listen to the book first.)
5. I asked folks on FB, if it was just me or if a lot of people on FB were going to Italy, Spain and Greece this year? Actually mostly Italy and Greece and flooding FB with pictures.
They responded, no, it's not just you - they were feeling European Vacation Envy as well.
I can't go to Europe at the moment - work. (I can afford it, I just have no time.)
I may try to go next year - but if I did? I'm thinking either Switzerland, or a cruise of Italy and Spain.
I also want to go to Hawaii and New Zealand.
Mother out of the blue during my vacation - asked: "If you could visit one place in the world right now, where would it be?"
ME (after a minute or two of internal debate): New Zealand.
Mother: Oh. I'm sorry we didn't get you there.
Me: Not an issue. I'll try some day.
Mother: You can't drive - so probably would want to go with a tour.
Me: Most likely.
6. Almost done with Slayers, and it turns out I was right about where it was going.
Spike, as predicted, was just scamming Dru, and actually still Team#Slayers. Although they did do some nice character development there, with him explaining to Dru that he can't do the whole co-dependent sadism bit any longer. Where they get off on each other's sadistic impulses.
He has a soul now, and it just isn't something that he can stand to do any longer. He needs to help others, and atone. But he did love her in his way, and still cares for her.
Juliet Landau makes Dru kind of loveable. And it is all Juliet Landau. Although Amber Benson does give her a bit more depth than Whedon's writers did.
Also this story does slant more towards female empowerment, even in regard to the villains, and the secondary characters are all male. Even the Big Bad is male - but kind of a possession and not a main character.
It's an interesting approach, and very character centric. It does drag on a bit - in a few places, but other than that a fun listen. I'm enjoying it more than some other stuff I've listened to.
7. [ETA] Messaged my Doctor on the Health Portal (they have a great one - offers quick interaction with my medical team without having to get an appointment) - regarding how long after contracting shingles, I have to wait to get the flu/Covid vaccine.
Doctor: I am glad that shingles infection is healing. Pictures show no blisters. Since still having a little tingling I would wait 2 weeks until tingling resolves then get flu shot and wait 1 month from flu shot and then schedule the COVID shot but only if feeling great
Please let me know if tingling is getting worse then will need to start medication to help this.
Remember if had a COVID infection must wait 90 days after first symptoms to get COVID-vaccine.
Feel better.
I didn't ask about when to get the Shingles Vaccine again. I have no blisters, just a healing scar.
