First if you liked Puppet Angel and like graphic art - you have to look at
this, it's worth the long download time and is the same quality as any graphic novel I've seen.

Amazing.

Two, TV shows for summer

One of the people on my flist the other day asked what is there to watch during the summer? That's when I realized something odd, I actually prefer the Summer and Late Summer tv shows to most of the ones airing in January-May. Time was that the summer months were a literal dead zone for TV. For some reason whenever the temperature began to rise and the days got longer, tv took an extended vacation. I'd eagerly wait for them to start again in the fall and in February. Now, it's the opposite - I look forward to shows airing in June, July and August. And find the series airing during the year less engaging. Very odd.

Course what interests you - has a lot to do with which of the following guestions fascinates you the most. Is it why? how? or what? For me, it is always "why"? The following tv shows are all about "why" or the emotional journeys of the characters, what and how are still important but not the main focus. They are also shows that use visual metaphors, reference literature and science fiction stories, and explore metaphysical, philosophical and psychological issues in a new and twisty way. These are TV shows that probably won't be number one in the Neilsen ratings, and in most cases are considered cult hits. They aren't as mainstream as Lost, Desperate Housewives, Gilmore Girls, Alias or 24. Little more like Veronica Mars, except willing to go a tad darker and take more risks.

My favorite tv shows are airing during these months:

1. BattleStar Galatica (new version) - July 18. BSG in January -March, was the only show that had me on the edge of my seat or held my interest all the way through. It was also one of the few that did not have gender issues. The women and men were equally fascinating and the characters, even the supporting ones, completely used and examined. Possibly the best tv show on.
2. Dead Zone - which is actually better than the Christopher Walken film, premiers June 8. Also a show that delves into its characters, explores all the facets. A mystery show that is more interested in "why" someone does something, their motivation, than how you figure out the mystery or how it was done.
3. The 4400 - it's one of the few missing person sci-fi tales that's not redundant or about alien abductions or government conspiracies regarding aliens. This show doesn't look for an external force causing our downfall or aiding in humanity's downfall/salvation - nope, it's us. Last night's episode referenced a short story by HP Lovercraft called Shadow Land (I think, would have to recheck.) I'd planned on taping the second half of last night's episode, but couldn't stop watching. So ended up staying up much later than I intended.
4. Nip/Tuck - uses plastic surgery as a metaphor for mid-life crisis. One of the darkest and twistiest shows I've seen in a while.
5. Rescue Me - which I plan to retry this summer. It stars Dennis Leary as a self-destructive fireman, who is a bit of an anti-hero.

Sunday: 4400-9pm/Dead Zone on USA-10pm
Tuesday (hopefully starting in August):NipTuck (F/X)-10pm
Wedensday : Rescue Me (F/X)-10pm
Friday: BattleStar Galatica (Sci-Fi) 10pm

and I'll also try Tim Minear's The Inside - premiering 9pm on Wed, I think, on Fox.

Only draw-back is they are, with the exception of 4400, on at 10pm.
