Joyce Carol Oats on Xitter, reminds me of why I don't read Joyce Carol Oats.

There are just some writers that give me a headache and I wonder, why are they published? What idiot decided to torture us in this way?

She was the writer in residence at my college a few years before I got there. She destroyed reputations with spouting gossip and truth, and then wrote it in her stories. Not well respected.

Not surprising, kind of what she likes to do on Xitter.

I find her painful to read - her prose is a bit like wandering through a thorny garden in desperate need of pruning. Much prefer Margaret Atwood, who writes in a similar viene but nowhere near as thorny.
