Decided to watch the Grammy's on Paramount Plus - to see the Performances, don't care about the Awards. I don't think we should give awards for works of art. (ETA: I don't think ANYONE should be giving awards for works of art.) It's too frigging subjective. And massages our sick narcissistic culture or insecure need for validation. I mean, you've sold your records, gotten to perform, why the frigging hell do we need to give you a trophy? [ETA: or - "why do you need a trophy saying you are the best?"]

But I don't make the rules. And people are weird.

There are great performances in it. Annie Lennox does a great tribute to Sinead O'Connor, with Nothing Compares to You. Plus Tracy Chapman's duet with Luke Coombs on Fast Car. And Joni Mitchellat 80 singing Both Sides Now (which is quite moving when an 80 year old sings that song, particularly one she wrote). It's worth it for the performances. Although, I'm admittedly not much of a Pop fan - it's kind of moany, whiny, and about breaking up with folks. Pop is kind of like the Barbie movie...you either love it or...like bits of it, and try to ignore the rest.

Memage:

1. Are We Becoming ‘Numb’ to School Shootings?

Yes. There's been so many now, that the media barely reacts to them without much more than a flinch, if that.

"There have been 7 school shootings this year that resulted in injuries or deaths, according to an Education Week analysis. There have been 189 such shootings since 2018. There were 38 school shootings with injuries or deaths last year. There were 51 in 2022, 35 in 2021, 10 in 2020, and 24 each in 2019 and 2018."

From Education Week

Yet, still, we refuse to restrict guns. Or do away with them. And we still teach people shoot them as if it's a sport or game. So, yes, we're numb. But maybe we always were?

2. What Words Do You Hate?

Cunt. The "N" word - that rhymes with Trigger. Just the sound of it makes me wince. Faggot. Dyke. Words that have hate behind them.

3. What Recent Events Will Most Likely Be Featured in History Museums Someday?

* The COVID Pandemic
* The War in GAZA, which has bled into Syria, Yemen, and other areas of the Middle East
* January 6th Insurrection

4. When Do You Choose Making a Phone Call Over Sending a Text?

When it requires too much explanation and can't be covered in a text. Also tone becomes an issue - and a voice is required. Such as expressing concern, pain, compassion, etc.

I called my brother to tell him my mother broke her hip - I didn't text him in 2021 for example.

5. What Temperature Do You Set the A/C or Heat To Be Comfortable?

69 degrees at night. 75 degrees during the day for A/C. No control over the Radiator.

6. What Are Your Favorite Works of Art?

Impressionists (Monet and Degas)
Vincent Van Gough
Sculptures by Rodin
Photographs - I love photographs

I'm not much of a fan of hyper-realism. I like more abstract art.

Graphic novel or comic art - that tells a story.

Favorite comics art? Calvin and Hobbes, Bloom County, Doonesbury (I actually met one of the artists for that strip - Gary Trudeu wrote it, he didn't necessarily draw it).

7. How Do You Remember What You Need to Remember?

If I write it down, can visualize it, and connect it to something or it has a rhythm to it and can be interacted with on some level by me? I can remember it. If I can't - it won't. And the more I interact or use it, the more I'll remember it.

I can remember phone numbers and contract numbers and social security and ID numbers for example - because it has some sort of rhythm in my head, and I've used it enough.

But I can't remember song lyrics or tunes to save my life. I don't know why.

8. Have You Ever Stumbled Upon a Cool Public Performance?

Yes. I live in NYC, it kind of goes with the territory.

9. What Are the Animals in Your Life?

I don't have any. I'm allergic, and I can't take care of them. My brother's cats are adorable, whenever I saw them. One passed.

10. What Did/Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

Novelist, Civil Rights Advocate, Diplomat. Novelist is about the closest I got.

Sigh, Best Jazz Performance - didn't get focused on. The Grammy's is very Pop focused. I like Jazz better. I'm clearly my father's daughter.

I don't care about awards either. We aren't giving them a trophy: they're being honored by their peers. Performers are performers for a reason--they give us a great deal of pleasure--why not let them have their night, celebrate themselves. (It's all nonsense, sure. It makes sense to relax and enjoy the performances--we have no input into the nominations or the awards--or what gets filmed for prime time.)
