Feb. 11th, 2024 08:43 pmI watched the Superbowl long enough to determine the following:
1. I lost the Superbowl pot at work. I think Mel got it.
2. The ads are horrible - and appear to have gone downhill. Seriously these are the worst ads in the history of superbowl ads. Are they even trying?
3. How did these teams get this far? They are horrible. And European "football" aka rugby is so much more entertaining, can we do that instead? More importantly, why aren't we? Because some idiot invented grid-iron.
4. My dislike of the Kansas City Chiefs remains justified.
5. I don't like Usher - time to switch to anything else.
I'm watching Upgraded on Amazon Prime instead. Amazon has decided for reasons I do not understand completely to "include" ads for the Amazon Prime, unless you pay an additional $2.99. But, Upgraded only had a Coach ad - and it was at the very beginning, the rest is ad free. Also, the Coach Ad was pretty good and so much better than all of the Superbowl ads. (We now know where the good ads are - on streaming channels. Broadcast television is dead, I tell you. I may cut the cable chord soon.
Upgraded is kind of amusing. (Note it is not for LGBTA fans or slash romance fans - it's a by the numbers poor New Yorker dreaming of owning a gallery meets rich English guy, while working for nightmarish bosses at an auction house. Basic heterosexual 20 something rom-com. Since the two leads look the same age as my niece, they don't do anything for me romantically speaking. But hey, at least there's no sex scenes.)
Marisa Tomei is playing the Devil Wears Prada boss from hell, complete with fake Italian accent. She's hilarious. I can't take her seriously - she's Marisa Tomei. I almost didn't recognize her. And the best pal - is the star from the Derry Girls. Anthony Head is also in it, along with Camilla Mendex, who is in a lot of these. (Honestly, if you see a mean girl in high heels, put down a banana peel and watch them trip.) At any rate, it's thoughtless rom-com. With someone in a job - I'm so glad I don't have. There's no worse job than the glamour jobs - they call them that for a reason, they are hell jobs, but look amazing. The people who rise to the top of the glamour industry are not very nice or kind.
There's a couple of rom-coms on Prime - the other temptation was a romance between a female assassin and her hubby. And a Mr. & Mrs. Smith reboot.

1. What Are Your Favorite Viral Videos?
Don't have any? Do you have any?
2. Should a College Education be Free?
Yes. Although we'd have to find a way to pay the Professors to educate people and that would be a problem. But we could reduce the cost. Or fund it with charitable donations, tickets to football games, I don't know. The funding is the problem.
3. When Did You Last Have a Great Conversation?
I don't know? Define great. I've had good conversations with Mother at various points.
4. How Do You Feel About Valentine’s Day?
I'm writing a novel whose title is "Not Another Valentine's Day".
5. Is Shakespeare Too Hard?
No. But it is best to watch it performed. And by good actors who know how to perform it well, along with a good director. There's nothing worse than poorly performed Shakespeare. And if you read it - well, it's meant to be seen.
The Sonnets are poems - poems work for some, and not for others.
6. Are You the Same Person on Social Media as You Are in Real Life?
Yes. For the most part. Lying is exhausting and pointless. Why bother?
7. Does Punctuation in Text Messages Matter?
If you want to be understood? Yes.
8. Where Do You See Yourself in 10 Years?
Happily retired, and possibly on a cruise, beach or in the mountains writing.
9. Do You Speak a Second, or Third, Language?
I wish. But no. I have no facility for languages.
10. Did You Like School?
Not really. I liked learning, school often got in the way of it. A lot of people don't appear to be in school to learn or teach for that matter - I'm not really sure why they are there.
11. Is It Harder to Grow Up in the 21st Century Than It Was in the Past?
I wouldn't know. I grew up in the 20th Century. I kind of miss it at times, no cell phones, no streaming, no social media. We did have computers, but they were huge and on the clunky side. But it was nice not to feel like I was in a perpetual phone booth no matter where I went. I miss phone booths.
And subway tokens. And coins for washing machines.
12. Have you ever made homemade soup? Care to share your favorite recipe?
Yes. I don't really follow recipes? OR remember them? But Root Vegetable Soup - with sweet potato, turnips, leeks, onions, garlic, olive oil, parsnips, a touch of cream, spices (curry, cumin, pepper, cinnamon, salt, tumeric). Saute the garlic, onions, leeks, and olive oil. Until brown. Add leeks. Broth - vegetable or chicken broth. Then turnips. Add more water and broth. Add spices. Boil. Then use a mixer to grind it all together.
13. National Pizza Day. Have you ever made one from scratch - what are your favourite toppings?
Yes. Pepperoni and Mushrooms.
14. Do you own an umbrella or do you hate using them?
Yes. And Yes.
