1. Took a walk. Bought a few groceries - did not use debit card. I'm restricting use for a bit - so I can track purchases. Swung by the book store, and ran into a woman, who apparently was behind me in each store. We ran into each other at the book store - when we both got interested in a tote bag with the words "READ BANNED BOOKS" in bright colored letters across the front. Then we walked together for a bit discussing books, creativity and Rick Rubin, who is a famous music producer that she'd heard interviewed on a podcast. I asked her the name of the book, but promptly forgot it when we parted ways. I did get her first name at least - Susie and I have a visual of her in my head, I could probably draw her.

Ah found it. She'd showed it to me, apparently she loved it so much, she bought two copies of it.

The Creative Act : The Way of Being

It reminds me of Julia Cameron's the Artist's Way. The current trend is artistic inspirational. Which is a definite improvement over self-help entrepreneurial. What's nice about Rubin - is his view is anything can be creative, from gardening, to put together a nice meal, to cleaning out a closet. I kind of like that take on the world.

It's a lovely day today. Blue sky. Crisp air. In the 70s. I wasn't quite up to a long walk. Lack of sleep and the foot is still slightly sore.

2. Good Reads asked on Twitter: "Would you marry or date someone who didn't read?"

No. Definitely not. That's never happening.

3. The television show "Nobody Wants This" is annoying in how it represents Jewish/Gentile relationships. 90% of the men that I've dated in my life were Jewish, my brother is married to a woman who is Jewish - we didn't have ANY problems. No one cared that my brother and I were raised Catholic. Granted they weren't rabbis, but still.

The inter-religious marriage is only an issue for the orthodox religions. These aren't orthodox.

I keep getting jarred out of the story.

4. Friday Five is about Flowers..

* What are your 5 favorite flowers?

- Sunflowers
- Lilies
- Violets
- Roses (my grandmother used to cross bred them)
- Bird of Paradise

* What do you like to do with flowers?

Draw, paint, and photograph them...mostly. I'm not much of a flower arranger or picker. And I am not a gardener.

*. Do you like native flowers, domestic flowers, or a mix of both?

Both. I honestly don't know the difference? I'm not a gardener.

*. Do you grow flowers yourself, or just look at what grows elsewhere?

I look. I let nature and other people do that. I tend to kill plants by accident.

*. Do you know (any version of) the Language of Flowers?

Yes, the Hawaiian version -that I know of. Not in detail. My facility for languages is poor - and I honestly can't remember any of it. I just don't have a memory for the intricacies of languages. I had to work hard to master the language of my birth - specifically the spoken part of it.

It's interesting? People who are linguistically inclined and have a facility for language don't get those of us who don't have those skills or attributes or talents.

"Why can't you learn another language? Anyone can?"
"Can you draw?"
"No, but that's different."
"It's not. It uses a different part of the brain. We all have different skills and facilities and our brains process information differently. Some people can learn languages, some people can draw people from memory. It is what it is. We're not all blessed with the same skills or ways of processing information. Be grateful for the skills you have and don't assume others possess them too."

Sorry, I've fought with one too many language nerds in my lifetime. It's not rocket science, people. Some people can learn a language, some can't. And stating otherwise isn't going to change that.

5. I picked up two more books yesterday via Amazon Kindle. One was advertised by Joe Hill (horror writer of Lock & Key, Nostreftu, and others), and one by Good Reads. I flirted. Said no. Flirted again. And gave in. Damn.

* Withered Hill by David Barnett - a dark and unsettling British Folk Horror Novel, that takes place in Lancaster.

* Home Before Dark by Riley Sager - which I actually got on sale via Kindle points. It's a haunted house horror novel.

Both are my weakness. I love folk horror and haunted house. Anything with ghosts, or folklore.

I love books. It's one of the many things I adore about NYC - it's book country. I have two book stores in my area now, and two libraries, plus one in the basement, and all the little libraries around the neighborhood. And book festivals galore. I also have art and music fests, art museums, and people playing music everywhere. If you are a culture junkie? There's no where better than NYC.

I really like Joe Hill. I think he has a good blend of humor in in there that is actually funny.

* What do you like to do with flowers?
Mostly leave them alone. They have a purpose that has nothing to do with me.

5 favorite flowers
1 Bright red roses. My mother had big ones growing by the front porch, I have little tea roses in the back (from a previous owner.)
2 Daffodils. They popped up through the snow in the Midwest and spring soon followed.
3 Tulips. There is a family story of how tulips in Holland indirectly led to my father's family moving to the U.S.
4 Echinocereus Fendleri (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echinocereus_fendleri) The prettiest flowers in my former Phoenix cactus garden.
5 Saguaro. Big white flowers, high in the air, in my current front yard.

Some people can learn a language, some can't.
Something you learn very quickly trying to teach languages!
