Russo Brothers Explain Why They Came Back and Tease New Avengers Films
Over the years, he shared, there have been conversations with the team at Marvel — including President Kevin Feige and Co-President Louis D’Esposito — and ideas thrown around for potential new films on which to collaborate. But “really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon an idea that activated all of us,” said Anthony. “You couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.”
Reunited on the forthcoming Marvel films with screenwriter Steven McFeely — one half of the partnership of Markus and McFeely, who scripted all the prior Russo Brothers Marvel films— Joe Russo, in this week’s profile, recalls calling the latter with a “crazy idea.”
“What do you think if we all go back and do Secret Wars?” he remembers asking. “You were like, ‘F**k no. Absolutely not.’ And then you hung up. And the next morning at 7.30 you called and were like, ‘Alright, I have an idea.'”
The Russos announced their commitment to direct the next two Avengers films at Comic-Con 2024, bringing out Robert Downey Jr. to make the bombshell revelation that he, too, would be returning to the franchise — this time, as villain Doctor Doom — after seeing Iron Man die heroically in Endgame. Coming to direct that film and Avengers: Infinity War following work on a pair of lauded Captain America films — The Winter Soldier and Civil War — the Russos most recently got behind the camera on The Electric State, a new film set to premiere on Netflix on March 14. Based on Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel, the sci-fi pic stars Millie Bobby Brown as Michelle, a teenager traversing a retro-futuristic 1990s U.S. to find her missing brother, accompanied by a robot sent by him. Chris Pratt co-stars as Keats, a drifter who aids Michelle on her journey, with Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, and Giancarlo Esposito rounding out the cast.
Before getting around to the new Avengers films, Marvel is set to release titles including Captain America: Brave New World (February 14), Thunderbolts* (May 2) and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25).
I'm excited. The Russos did an excellent job integrating multiple character stories across multiple films - that's hard to do well.
It's nice to have something to look forward to. Even if it's just a comic book movie. ;-) [These movies and the comics are my comfort food, which I need more than ever these days.]

Date: 2025-03-27 10:53 pm (UTC)No, they are bringing back all the new blood. Or the characters introduced from roughly after Civil War, along with the supporting. (And some are bigger properties - Ms Marvel has become the new Wolverine, she's as if not more popular now than Wolverine is currently in the comic franchise). Also bringing back their headliners, which 20th Century Fox had rights to until Disney bought 20th Century Fox along with all their entertainment properties/franchises (so Disney, who already owns Marvel Comics, pulled back the headliners of Marvel - The X-men and The Fantastic Four into their world).
X-men and Fantastic Four are the biggest comic book properties. They are basically the big sellers for Marvel (kind of like Batman, Superman and Justice League are for DC). The Avengers is not the big seller, nor is Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow or Thor.
The Fantastic Four has been attempted about three-four times by Fox, and not touched the landing as of yet. Hopefully they do it right this go around. (I'm not positive, but I think they are doing with the Fantastic Four what they did with Captain Marvel, and starting back in time, then moving them forward.)
X-men has a mixed history. Some of their films are fantastic and did very very well, others bombed.
A lot of that had to do with the show-runner. Bryan Singer was an asshole apparently, and so was Brett (the director).
The directors and writer are the same from Civil War, Endgame and Infinity War - which are among the best, and most popular superhero films of all time. (I recently rewatched two of them - and they still hold up.)
So I think it may work. It is a large cast though...which is hard to do justice too. But Infinity War and Endgame and Civil War had huge casts as well, which is why they attracted the talent.
