They say the little things make life worth living, thinking this may be true. Although how little these things truly are, is a matter of point of view. Today much like most of the week, small kindnesses and large ones from folks I met online got me through a tough stretch. Yet again.

Say what you will about this community, it has gotten me through some tough times emotionally.

Today, I received in the mail a lovely little gift from [livejournal.com profile] ladystarlightsj , who if you haven't met her in person, is one of the most beautiful ladies I've met. Truly lovely face and eyes. Her gift of tea and a cute card with a cat looking at a gold fish, made me smile and laugh out-loud. (Okay more explanation is required - I read the note in the card before looking at the front of it, so saw "and you think you got stress? hang in there" then flipped over and saw a cat staring at a gold fish swirling in a fish-bowl. I laughed outloud.
(Now I'm pretty sure I got the right person, if not, tell me quick. She gave real name not online one and I'm sure I've remembered right...the problem with aliases...sigh. And I suck with names.)

And of course the friend on flist who told P about my problem, thank you. Plus all the supportive responses and advice (well-meant, and well-intentioned).

Day was dual in nature. Much like it looked - sunny white hazy heat, I called white hot days, where the sky has a film on it, the humidity is so thick the air feels like mud, and you are soaking wet within five minutes of stepping outside. They had set up cooling shelters for folks around the city - that's how bad it was, heat index of 110. Looked nice though. Now overcast - which I hope means rain...rain would help. Odd hoping for rain. Considering how wet it's been this year. We always want what we don't got, don't we? Never satisfied?

Little things can also irritate and make one grouchy. Even turn things topsy-turvy as much as make one smile.
Funny how that is. Life is not so much black or white as both, black and white - mixed.

At any rate, hopped over to the video store, took twenty to thirty minutes, found two films wanted to see: The Punisher and The Station Agent, took them up to the desk and the guy behind it rudely told me I had a late fee.
I gawked at him. "How? I turned in everything on time. Sunday before 6pm." "Well it says you were late."
"But I wasn't." "You'll have to take it up with the owner, I can't help you." "What's the fee?" I ask thinking, okay its probably just a buck, I'll pay and stop coming. Nope. "14.50" which ahem is more than the rental.
"Stop looking at me like that" he tells me. I stare at him. "I've come here for years, never had a late fee, and I turned those in on time! I'm not paying and I'm renting those movies. I'm gone." I was sooo angry. I'd made a point last Sunday to take the films in, left them on the desk in front of the woman, even had to come back three times to do so, since she'd been gone first two times and just left a message on the door - back in 5. That's it, sick of the damn video stores - impossible to find stuff any more, horrendous late fees, and you can't trust the frigging counter help. I'm going to subscribe to netflix. That is if I can figure out how to subscribe to netflix. Anyone want to help me on this one? It sounds a lot less irritating than the video store deal.
Plus, can see TV shows like Carnival, Deadwood, the L Word, Six Feet Under that I do not have access to.

Came home, vented to mother. Who gave me decent advice. Then watched tv for a little while. Eat half of a small, cup size chocolat mousse. Was fine for a while, then got the worst cramp in my side, until I fixed myself some dinner - small portion of steak, green beans, and half a corn on cob - which oddly made me feel better. Not sure if it was the mousse or not. The person at the shop swore there was no gluten in it. Just hazelnuts, chocolat, cream...Worrying, since I want to have the other half tomorrow.

Oh, got my high-speed internet connection, finally. The cable guy came around 10 to set it up. Had to get up at 7:30, just in case he came at 8, they don't give you an exact time, just a range. Two guys came, both from Dominican Republic, neither spoke great English, but we did have two decent conversations all the same. Body language is about 80% of it anyhow. He told me that I should buy a router and since I've got a wireless card it will connect to the router with a cable necessary. Just plug the cable cord into the router and voila. Or I can buy a long cable from radio shack to connect lap-top to cable connection. The problem is cable doesn't stretch very far - just far enough to connect from tv stand to couch. Not to desk. That said, I still can use dial-up or get router. We also had an odd discussion about how horrid hospitals in US are next to hospitals in Dominican Republic. Apparently in the Dominican Republic - you can go to the hospital and "immediately" be treated, no wait. They will give you a shot to take care of drunkeness or rat poison. Some sort of vitamin B, adrenaline shot? Not clear. Fluid is yellow at any rate. Here, you just wait forever until they call you, ask you to fill out forms and how you'll pay, then finally will take care of you. This in a nutshell is why I don't currently have a nutritionist...apparently insurance only covers diabetes and not gluten intolerance, so for me, nutritionist costs $225 and they are less than eager to help me if insurance doesn't cover. The state of healthcare in this country is not great, and I happen to work at a health insurance company. Ironic, I know.

Also read most of EW today. Will comment on that and stuff saw on flist in separate, public post, since those things aren't personal and are more cultural related.

Keeping the personal in flocked for now.

Okay off to read flist...may come back with ramblings on what see on flist...might not. Read part of flist this morning, now need to read rest, made it as far back as Friday.
