Buffy Reboot Casting News
I'm not crazy about this? It feels too much like a retread. But I may be wrong? Also there's one too many new regulars or new characters, and none of them look intriguing. Plus a lot of men, and not many women - the original series had more women or female characters and built in new characters as it went.
"Faly Rakotohavana (Unprisoned), Ava Jean (Law & Order: SVU), Severance‘s Sarah Bock, Daniel Di Tomasso (CSI: Vegas) and Frasier star Jack Cutmore-Scott have been cast as series regulars opposite Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Sarah Michelle Gellar in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, which has a pilot order at Hulu.
Armstrong plays the new slayer — an introverted high-school student named Nova — in the untitled Buffyverse project, which Gellar executive produces in addition to reprising her signature role as Buffy Summers.
Rakotohavana will play Hugo, a privileged, likable high-school student who is a geek. Jean will play Larkin, another student described as a “chronic do-gooder.” Bock will play Gracie, the ringleader for a group of church-going students. Di Tomasso will play Abe, Nova’s single father who is a photojournalist. Scott will play Mr. Burke, a popular high school teacher.
Oscar winner Chloé Zhao is directing the pilot, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. No additional information has been provided about the project, referred to as the next chapter in the Buffyverse, which comes from 20th Television and Searchlight TV [this is Disney].
Rakotohavana was a series regular on Hulu’s Unprisoned and a lead of the Disney+ film Secret Society of Second Born Royals. He is repped by Media Artists Group and The ESI Network.
Jean recently guest starred on Law & Order: SVU and is a series regular on the upcoming Angel Studios musical limited series A Week Away. She is repped by Thruline Entertainment, Evolve Artists Agency and Yorn, Levine, Barnes.
Bock is known for her role as Miss Huang in Season 2 of Apple TV+’s Severance. She is repped by the Kutalent Agency, Amplified, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
Major Crimes alum Di Tomasso recently recurred on CSI: Vegas. He is repped by CESD and Authentic Talent & Literary Management.
British actor Cutmore-Scott recently starred opposite Kelsey Grammer in Paramount+’s Frasier reboot and recurred on Hulu’s murder mystery series Death and Other Details. He has appeared in three Christopher Nolan features: Oppenheimer, Tenet and Dunkirk. He is repped by UTA, Independent Talent Group, Entertainment 360, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller."
Here's IGN's take on the above:
https://www.ign.com/articles/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-reboot-casting-confirms-its-new-scooby-gang-backing-up-previous-leaks
"As previously announced, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong will lead the project, while Gellar will appear in its first episode, then appear afterwards in a recurring role.
The rest of the cast are all new to the franchise, TVLine reports, and include Severance's Sarah Bock as Gracie, Law & Order: SVU's Ava Jean as Larkin, and Faly Rakotohavana as Hugo. Major Crimes' Daniel di Tomasso plays Abe, while Frasier's Jack Cutmore-Scott is the mysterious Mr. Burke.
Gellar, meanwhile, was credited on the new script as Buffy "Anne" Summers, which some fans have suggested might mean the Slayer is once again attempting to operate under the radar, and using her middle name as a pseudonym.
While Gellar, who acts as an executive producer on the new show, has said she was keen for the reboot to feature a mix of new and returning characters, including those who were no longer alive, it's perhaps not surprising to see the series' core cast confirmed as all-new characters.
It's been more than 20 years since the original show's finale, and Gellar has said this reboot will need to find its own space to feature fresh stories and characters. That said, fans are still hoping for other classic characters to pop up from time to time, and original Buffy actress Charisma Carpenter has already told IGN she'd be keen to appear, after an "unjust" end to her character on spin-off Angel."
And the casting breakdown leaked on LJ:
https://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/130240609.html
Nova – A high school vampire hunter, determined and fearless, balancing school life with slaying. LEAD
Abe – Nova’s father, a dedicated photojournalist (40s-60s). LEAD
Mr. Burke – The school librarian who later becomes a vampire (30s-60s). LEAD [I truly hope he becomes a vampire - although per Variety and Deadline, he's a favorite teacher not a librarian. If he becomes a vampire - this could bring in Spike and Angel in some way as a new watcher or Wes.]
Cole – The alpha of the group, confident and a natural leader. LEAD [I think he's the hot kid and love interest.]
Hugo – A nerd from a wealthy family, has a thing for Nova but is awkward about it. LEAD [Originally he was supposed to be gay?]
Gracie – Nova's best friend, fascinated by myths and a huge Buffy fan. LEAD
Mia – A social media-obsessed student who gets caught up in the supernatural chaos. SUPPORTING [I think this has changed to church going group leader.]
Again, mixed feelings? I'll try it of course. But I'm going in with low expectations. So much will depend on the writing? It can go in any number of directions.
Unfortunately, they may well need more than just Gellar to pull in the Buffy fandom, since the vast majority of it wasn't watching for just Buffy, and many were watching for the supporting characters.
That said? I remain convinced that Marsters is involved somehow. Along with many others from the original cast (or Disney wouldn't have stopped them from doing Slayers on audio books) and Marsters wouldn't be as tight lipped about it and what he's working on. They don't need to do much - just bring them in as ten minute cameos or recurring - to pull in an audience.
Also they are just shooting the pilot at the moment. Whether it airs, has a lot to do with how well the pilot is received by Disney.
They are also rebooting the Buffy and Angel comics, again.
Kelly Thompson Takes over the Buffy and Angel Comics
"While Dynamite is keeping details on the story - and if it's a reboot, a continuation, or something else of previous TV shows, comics, or even the movie - it has picked out a writer for both the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic and the Angel comic. According to Dynamite series editor Nate Cosby, they didn't look at any previous Buffy writers (from the comics or TV series), or, frankly, anyone - except for one person: Kelly Thompson.
"Her passion for these characters is second-to-none," Cosby says of Thompson. "The interweaving story she’s crafted for both books is going to knock everyone's socks off."
Thompson comes to revive the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic franchise after she just did the same with DC's Wonder Woman in Absolute Wonder Woman, and did it in the past for Jem & The Holograms."
Sigh. I have no idea who Kelly Thompson is? I liked "The Last Slayer" best, with a 50 year old Buffy. But that's just me.

It's brutally hot here. In the 90s, feels like the 100s. (I let you figure out the translation to C, since I'm too lazy to google it.) The high today was 94, felt like 104 with the humidity. It's currently 90 degrees. I have A/C on and damn it's costing me a lot this summer. It has to be on all day - or it will work harder to cool down the apartment, and medications, etc could be affected.
Oh well, at least the smoke is gone - it's 58 air quality today as opposed to 100-138 over the weekend.

I was enjoying the Billy Joel Documentary And So it Goes which is coupled with an album of over 155 songs also entitled And So it Goes, Sunday Night on HBO. It told me a lot of things about Billy Joel that I didn't know - such as how Elizabeth Webber was the love of his life and his manager for a good portion of his career. She's interviewed in the documentary, and is responsible for getting him situated in the music business, and ensuring his songs became hit singles - by picking the ones that would take off such as "Just the Way You Are" - she was a better judge of his music and what would become a hit than he was or his producer. Just the Way You Are - is the song that got Paul McCartney's attention and the one McCartney wished he wrote. (Seriously Paul? You can't write all of them.)
Just the Way You Are
Although my favorite Joel songs were the stories he told, such as The Piano Man and Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.

I'm ignoring the news at the moment, and side eyeing it? Or looking at it from the corner of my eye. I can't do anything about it. And it's not like I don't care - I do. But I can't help the Ukraine (there's a lot of Ukrainians in my area and building), and I can't help Gaza. Or any of the other places around the world that are suffering and under fire (sigh, there are so many). I think humans like to kill each other? Today on the morning news - they informed me that over 3000 ghost guns had been taken off the streets. Ghost Guns = illegal guns, that have been purchased illegally. Also shootings have gone down in NYC since they've started the program. There was bad news too, but I jumped away from it.
Work was..frustrating? But I let it go. I edit, then someone else edits, then someone else edits, then I see it again - and I think okay, why did I bother? And why did they make those edits? I'm trying to copy their edits from other reviews, but they aren't consistent, and contradict themselves.
I'm also apparently the financial guru, by default - no one else cares about the financials. So someone has to - me. This amuses me to no end. Oh well, I only have three - four more years left, possibly just three depending.
Example?
Modification No. 5 to ...
Sr VP's previous edit and my Edit: Modification ["MOD"] No. 5 to...
Sr. VP 's new edit: Modification No. 5 ["MOD"].
ME: WTF? That makes no sense. But I leave it alone, and in the next document's edit do - "Modification No. ["MOD"] 5 - thinking maybe that will work.

Date: 2025-07-30 12:07 am (UTC)I imagine that there are various reasons they didn't choose to do a continuation of the series, the first being problems with the original cast as well as the possibility of paying Whedon for their use? Plus they probably want to make this a long-running show for a new generation. It has an interesting group of people behind it but I feel like it would be most interesting to see a combination of old and new.

They don't have to pay Whedon a dime. He sold all rights to the Kuzis, and was work for hire. He doesn't own the characters at all. There's no possibility of having to pay Whedon anything. The Kuzis, 20th Century Fox (Disney), Berman, and Dolly Parton's Sandy Gallin have the rights, not Whedon. Whedon told people that way back in 1997.
Also, I think the original cast may actually pop up in cameos or be involved? They've kind of hinted at it. And they are all fairly close to Gellar. Some of the cast really wants to do a continuation - so badly, they did an audio book - Slayers, which is set records on audio worldwide. They'd have done another, but Disney put a halt to it - because of the Reboot.
But - they want to push the new characters. And I don't know if Buffy is a strong enough verse to make that work and draw people in? I have a feeling they'll fold in the past characters as either recurring or in cameos along the way or as supporting characters with small arcs.
The Buffy Revival; FF/CJL/SK
Date: 2025-07-30 11:36 am (UTC)After watching all of Skeleton Crew, I'm iffy if Ryan Armstrong can carry the series. She definitely has presence, but her character in that series didn't show a lot of range. (Since Gellar is behind her 1000%, I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.)
No complaints about Zhao. Excellent director. No complaints about the Zuckermans. Solid writers and showrunners. I am curious to see how they've reimagined the central concepts of the series. Is their spin on "high school is hell" fresh enough to satisfy us jaded Buffyphiles?
We shall see.

Date: 2025-07-30 01:12 pm (UTC)Just saw an article from TV fanatic. Apparently they are going the pilot route, not an automatic 6 episode order - which means Hulu is being cautious. Also it gives them more time to play with it and see what works. Pilots are often shown to test audiences within the target demo.
While they want to have the original cast come in at some point, SMG wants the new characters to get fully established first. So it may be down the road, if at all - it's unclear.
I foresee issues - the major one being that unless they want to grab a brand new audience (iffy and hard to do), the pull for the existing one needs to be more than Gellar.
Also, I don't know if you've seen SMG's other projects? But they've been...not well received, is probably an understatement. She's not necessarily a good judge of choosing projects or cast. (Wolf Pack, sigh.) Although it is close to impossible.
And I share your reservations about Armstrong. She was okay in Skeleton Crew? Then again, I didn't like Gellar at all when I started watching Buffy (and haven't liked her in literally anything else), so...

(BTW I'm glad Whedon is not earning a penny on this. Sold all the rights to your baby? Another bad move in a line of bad moves, Joss.)
Pretty much. He got all excited when his very first film script out of film school got optioned (he was maybe 21?), and instead of consulting a good lawyer - he sold it lock stock and barrel. All rights. Then when the television show popped up, the deal he made was basically leave me alone to play with all my dolls and do everything my way - but you get to own all the residual, subsidiary, foreign, translation rights and pay me a salary. Which is actually typical in television - television writers are basically work for hire, they own zip in the way of intellectual property rights. The person paying for it - owns it, which is generally speaking the investors and studio.
I never felt sorry for him. And when fandom whined over it - I thought, well, that's how the industry works. And Whedon was an egotistical nitwit and deserved it.

[ETA: I got curious to see if I remembered it correctly and googled it, per AI overview (which is the only thing I find it useful for):
Joss Whedon didn't exactly "give away" all the rights to Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the sense of a voluntary and complete relinquishment. Instead, the ownership of the Buffyverse, including the TV series and spinoffs, is more complex and has evolved over time:
1. Initial Sale for the Movie: Whedon wrote the original screenplay for the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer film. The rights to the movie and its characters, at that time, were owned by Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui, who produced the movie.
2. Television Series and Production Companies: Years later, when the idea for a TV series based on Whedon's Buffy concept emerged, the TV rights were held by Sandollar Television (Dolly Parton), which was headed by Gail Berman and Sandy Gallin. They approached Whedon to develop his vision for television, leading to the creation of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. [Dolly Parton's group
3. Studio Ownership: Ultimately, 20th Century Fox Television owned the rights to the Buffy TV series and the larger Buffyverse franchise.
4. Disney Acquisition: More recently, with Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, Disney now owns the rights to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the entire Buffyverse franchise.
In summary: While Joss Whedon is the creator and mastermind behind the Buffyverse, he did not retain full ownership of the intellectual property after selling the initial movie script and developing the television series under the umbrella of different production companies and studios. The rights and ownership of media franchises in Hollywood often involve complex contracts and agreements that can result in creators not holding onto all rights and control over their creations in the long run." Basically, I don't think Whedon had the power or level of control that Lucas did with Star Wars.]
Oh, Marsters did a Q&A with Juliet about a month ago, and was asked again about the reboot.
Question: Will we see Dru and Spike in the reboot?
Juliette just smiles, they look at each other, and Marsters states: I've been told in no uncertain terms to shut my damn mouth about the reboot. (pause flounders - then gives an analogy about sneaking in finding out what you are getting for Xmas before hand and how his screen-writer friend told him there's a feeding frenzy in Hollywood over who can write for it, assuming it gets picked up - but there's a lot to be excited about).
