Humid overcast day, with sunlight filtering through - and a bit on the hazy side. In the mid to upper seventies, although felt warmer due to the humidity. I put on the A/C and installed the new reverse and inverse air window fan in the bedroom - which I'm hoping will help when it gets colder and they start blasting the heat. Now, it's not an issue. I may get one for the living room as well but on the fence. Also considering the kitchen. Although I'm supposed to keep the fire escape window for the most part free? It's not - it has a screen, with a compost bin, and cookbooks in the window. Also that fire escape isn't the safest and I get out in a courtyard surrounded by buildings.

Also cleaned out the chemistry experiments in the fridge - basically transferred them to the compost bin, and the plastic to the recycling bin.
Didn't do a deep clean - I hurt enough, and that would kill my back.
Had lunch, which consisted of gluten free cheddar and chive "American Southern" biscuits (think American scones but puffy?) by way of Capulla's (an Italian Gluten Free Baking company). The biscuits are excellent by the way. Can't tell they are gluten free at all. (Turns out I didn't like biscuits previously because they had gluten - and made me sick.) Added proscuitto, cheddar cheese, and some English mustard, and it was a decent lunch.

Worked it off by going to the health food stores on Courteylou. Flatbush Coop and Frontier Health Food Store. I had an unexpected and somewhat toxic interaction at Frontier with an old guy that shelves things and advises people where to find stuff (he's always in my way, and I get a really bad vibe off of him every time I see him). Frontier usually has in its windows, support of refugees, and we support immigrants. So I'm at the cashiers desk, the cashiers are recent immigrants in which English is their second language, and this old guy, approximately mid-late 70s, white, with white hair - wants to know what to do with the signs (No Kings No Ice) and (Stop for Employees Only, Private), and states - they both should go in the bathroom.

Guy (who shelves things, and tells people where to find pills - he's never helpful, and always in my way):
Me: The Stop for Employees Only goes in the bathroom. The No Kings No Ice in the Window...
Guy: I'll have you know ICE saved my life this last week. Right out there. A guy in a car with a gun. Thank you.
Me: Did they threaten you.
Guy: Yup - held a gun to my head. And everything. The Turkish Restaurant called ICE on them and they saved me. Thank you.
Me: Well that's an isolated incident, and others aren't. Still against ICE. I went to law school and believe in due process.
Guy: So did I.
Me: And clearly you don't believe in due process.
(I paid my bill, and left. I won't return. The two POC and immigrants behind the counter stayed silent, not saying a word, while two priveleged white folks discussed ICE. I've not seen ICE and the Universe has kindly kept this away from me. But I also barely go to the stores on Courteylou, and only on weekends.)

The whole interaction left a bad taste in my mouth and rage in my heart at old farts, Turkish restaurants, people who are desperate enough to carry guns and gun manufacturers.

Spoke to mother, earlier, who regaled me with the story of a snake. They have poisonous snakes in Hilton Head, SC. She's also concerned about a Tropical Storm that is barreling in her general direction, but so far they are just sheltering in place.

Apparently one of her neighbors was watering plants in her garden and got bitten by a copperhead.

Mother: She was wearing Sandals. That's a big no-no. You never wear sandals while gardening.
Me: Good to know. Where was the snake - was it in your area.
Mother: Yes, my street. I've seen garden snakes, and copperheads.
It was in the breezeway between our house and the garage.
Me: Inside?
Mother: no, no, the other house - and outside. Your father saw it. I didn't. He asked if I saw the copperhead when I arrived in the garage. I stepped out, and there it was curled up on the side. I also saw one in the aezelas (flower bed), coiled and almost put my hand on it. I jumped back and stayed out of the shrubbery.
Me: See? This is why I don't garden or camp. Too many critters. I don't mind snakes. But I'd prefer the critters stay where they are, and I stay out of their way.
Mother: I don't mind snakes either just the poisonous ones.

Apparently the neighbor tried to drive herself to the emergency room, got woozy, and ambulance came to her. It had bitten her foot. They couldn't give her the anti-venom because she was on blood thinners. But they monitored her, and it was okay - since it was a more mature snake (younger ones release it all at once apparently), and it was her foot. She also got fined by security - for pulling over, even though it was an emergency. At least they didn't tow her.

Dinner was mixed greens, feta, black pitted kalmata olives, falafal, tahini sauce, glazed pecans, apple cider vinegar/lemon juice. With iced unsweetened black tea (and lemon juice) for beverage. And gluten free vegan chocolate chip cookie for desert. (They only have vegetarian baked gluten free chocolate chip cookies at the bakery, nothing else that is gluten free. Actually, if you want a gluten free cookie from a bakery? It's also vegan by default. I'm not sure what vegetarian version is? There's not meat in cookies, just eggs, milk, butter, flour, sugar, and chocolate chips. So vegan is basically coconut milk, coconut oil, flour, sugar, chocolate chips or some variation. I find it annoying, since I can eat eggs and butter and milk, I just can't have glutens. I don't understand this - they can make all sorts of cookies without the milk, eggs, and butter - why not be able to make ones without gluten flour? Not that I really care? They taste the same more or less, but eggs/butter/milk are more stable and better texture.)

The photo was obviously not taken today but several weeks ago, I just never got around to posting it until now.

Why would the restaurant have called ICE instead of the regular police, if somebody was waving threatening the guy with a gun? Or did they figure ICE would be more enthusiastic about doing something?

The stores here are all starting to stock more vegan than vegetarian food, and I'm with you - I'd rather have the veggie stuff as I am OK with milk/eggs etc. What I'm not OK with is coconut oil, which I'm mildly allergic to. It's so annoying I have to read the ingredients all the time now...
