Has been my favourite christmas song since it was released.
Have had more than one 'argument' over the 'cheap lousy faggot' line, which is my favourite line in the whole song.
Used to hang out with people who called each other 'faggot' and 'girl' and 'dude' and didn't give a damn about the gender of the person they were with; especially the Trans peeps who called themselves 'trannies' and 'whore' with abandon.
I miss them, given the age I was then; most of those wonderful people are likely gone from this world now. They went through so may terrible times and survived them and sang and joked about it with the same kind of humour of the men of Easy Company in Band of Brothers.
There are still days when my memories of them keep me going another day.
I would have loved to have sung this song with them.
It's featured on the television series the Wire - or I think it is, because that may be where I heard it first.
Yeah, people don't realize that words like fag, faggot, and even niggah have different meanings depending on who is using them? Also in regards to fag and faggot - it also means a cigarette in British slang.
Anyhow, thanks for sharing the touching memory with me. I have a friend who calls me and pretty much everyone "dude" regardless of gender. And I've heard bitch be used to refer to folks regardless of gender.
Context and subtext is important when it comes to language. Words change their meaning depending on how they are used.
