So glad it's Friday finally...
Jan. 23rd, 2026 09:22 pm1. Sleep
I might actually get more than 6 hours sleep tonight. Ate later than usual, and feel bloated and gassy, so, we'll see. Also assorted body parts ache. Twenty-something physical therapist was complaining about his aches and pains and issues - and I'm thinking, just wait until you are in your forties and fifties, forget about thirty. Of course, I had to stop running at 25, when my knees decided that my days of running were gone. Found out today - that apparently the patella, top of the knee, can become problematic if you've done a lot of jumping and running in your youth. (See I told you running was a bad for you. I should know, I ran track and cross country as a kid. Of course there are folks running marathons in their 80s, but they also aren't 6 foot and over 170 pounds.)
2. The Weather outside is frightful...actually it's just really windy and as a result, really cold. (So, I'm dripping faucets in my bathroom, just in case.) It's currently 19 degrees F, and -1 F with windchill. (I don't know what that is in C), tomorrow our high is supposed to 18 F. As stated in a previous post - I'm hibernating this weekend, because it's cold and there's a blizzard on Sunday through Monday. Everyone has cancelled activities for Sunday (except for a crazy hiking club in Ditmas - who thinks it would be a great idea to set a little fire in a charcoal pit in Prospect Park on Sunday during the blizzard) and Saturday, which is supposed to be frigid, (except for the crazy Ditmas hiking club that plans to collect firewood on Saturday for the fire on Sunday). Even the Church is setting services on Zoom. The Mayor requesting that everyone stay inside, if at all possible, and do Sunday services remotely.
Weirdly, the States that normally get snow and winter weather - aren't. Montana has barely gotten much snow, outside of the higher elevations, Idaho doesn't have any, nor does Utah, not much in Colorado, and Minnesota.
No, it's Texas up through the central US and the Eastern seaboard that's getting it, including Florida. I don't know, I think mother nature may be mad at us? Can't think why.
3. The Unasked for, but you will get it anyway...Daily Buffy Rewatch Post - for those who are remotely interested.
On the Buffy Re-Watch - about to enter one of my favorite stretches in the Spike redemption arc - Conversations with Dead People through Never Leave Me. These episodes, along with Lies My Parents Told Me - explain the Spike/Buffy relationship rather well or what drew the characters together.
And what they needed to learn from each other. Both had sick mothers. And both had fathers that abandoned them to their sick mother. The reason Spike starts taking care of Dawn, is close to Joyce, and stays to help with Dawn and help the others fight - after Buffy dies - is explained in the song "Never Leave Me" - which he grew up with. It's why he's still with his mother, as a young man in his twenties. And it's why he sires his mother - hoping to save her. It's also why he sticks with Dru and cares for Dru when she's sick. Why he can't leave Buffy - once Joyce dies, Riley leaves, and then Giles - Spike becomes more devoted to Buffy. It's why he comes back to her after getting the soul, and it probably is also why he gets the soul after he attacks her. Spike can't get past the last thing the human part of him, William, was concerned with - which was his sick mother. Just as Angel couldn't get past his father's disapproval, Spike can't get past his need to please and honor his promise to his mother, that he'll never leave her - which of course he does, when he dies at Dru's hand and comes back to his mother as a vampire.Once Spike deals with that final failing in Lies, he is finally able to leave Buffy (by sacrificing himself) and move on. Angel equally gets past his - but through his relationship with Connor, and finally being in his father's shoes.
And Buffy gets past her need for the older/father figure who won't abandon her once she shuts her bedroom door in Giles' face, allows Spike to sacrifice himself and lets him go, and declines a romantic relationship with Wood.
It's an interesting twist on the old kill the father/confront the father motif in the Hero's Journey.
(This is probably the only television show that I've felt the need to endlessly write about. I've written about others just not to this degree. I don't what it is about Buffy that makes me feel the need to do this...)
4. Social media has found a way to convince me to check out Star Fleet Academy (which I was previously ambivalent about) and breaking my boycott of Paramount +. How? Apparently Holly Hunter and Paul Giametti are in it. (And just...that begs viewing.) Also, it's pissed off that turd Stephen Miller, along with the Muskrat, and the idiot in the White House. So...now, I'm curious. I honestly thought it was just going to be a run of the mill teens train to be space, Star Trek style - which, hard pass. But apparently not?
5. Not that any one cares any longer...(time was I'd see a lot of posts on this, now, John Scalzi didn't even post on it) - the Oscar nominations came out.
Me: The Oscars were announced.
Cubicle Mate: Oh, I don't follow that.
Me: I don't know if you've seen Sinners -
Cubicle Mate: Twice. I loved it.
Me: Yeah, so did I - well, it got 16 nominations, broke records. (It broke Titantic, La La Land and All About Eve's records - all of which are entirely white casts, while Sinners is 80% black cast.)
Actually most of the nominees this year were kind of amazing. 20 Cool, Shocking, and Downright Wild Facts about the 2026 OscarsThey had two international films nominated as Best Picture. Brazil and Norway. Sinners was nominated in almost every category. Kpop Demon Hunters made history as the first KPop song nominated for an Oscar. (Also surprisingly Wicked was completely shut out - in favor of Sinners, which was in theaters in February and March, while Wicked came out in the fall.)
If you haven't seen Sinners? Try to grab it on either HBO Max or rent. It's amazing. I saw it back in April or May? And I can't forget it. It stuck with me. And I saw it on HBO Max. I remember all of it vividly. And want to see it again. Think post-restoration Black historical drama meets angsty romantic musical with vampires by way of Night of the Living Dead. It's the most risky film I've seen in years, and the blend of genres is brilliant. It deserved every nomination it got - not that I care about award shows, but the film industry does care and it does effect film.

January Question a Day Memage
19. What colour scheme is your bedroom?
I don't know - shades of blue, with some red in there? (The bed spread, throw pillows - blue, coverlet, white, rug - it's a turkish red and blue rug, photo on wall of niece and big fluffy white (streaked with red) cats.
20. Have you read any of the Winnie the Pooh books?
Yes. To say I was an avid reader as a child would be a gross understatement. I couldn't read until the second-third grade, but once I figured out how? I read whatever I could find. I also had them read to me at one stage. I've read most of the children's classics. Plus the Winnie the Pooh books had pictures and illustrations.
21. Do you like wearing colourful socks? What do the brightest socks you own look like?
I tend to only wear them at home - and they usually are fluffy stay at home socks. The brightest ones had a raccoon on them - but I lost them, now they are the purple fluffy ones. I also have a pair of fluffy socks with penguins on them. My difficulty with socks is I lose them doing laundry.
22. In January 1496, Leonardo da Vinci unsuccessfully tested a flying machine. Do you like flying?
Not really? I mean it's okay. I don't mind being in the plane. But I'm six foot, and planes are built for midgets. Also, I hate the logistics of flying? Which has only gotten worse over the years? Too many odds and bits to worry about. Personally, I prefer trains - easier to get on and off, not as many things to worry about, more comfortable seats, bigger windows, better views, and more leg room.
23. The pirate William Kidd was born this month in 1645. Have you read Treasure Island?
No. Seen it performed a lot on screen, but never felt the need to read it.
