More TV reportage to distract myself
Oct. 18th, 2006 03:22 pm[The job search, social search etc. are driving me batty at the moment. You don't want to know. And I don't want to depress myself talking about it.]
Veronica Mars - am on the fence. Have to say I adore Weevil. But putting the boy in "flannel" shirts and "long sleeve pin stripes" not a good costume choice. Reminds me of some of the funky things they had Spike wearing in Buffy. Yes, I know everyone online is reminded of Spike when they look at Logan, I'm reminded of him by looking at Weevil. Also like Veronica's interactions with Weevil better. Although not sure I can imagine the two in a romantic entanglement. Yes, I'm a Weevil fan. He's sort of Keith junior. Clever. Loses his temper. Not privileged. Also enjoy Logan. And VM/Logan do have good chemistry. But last night's episode was sort of slow. And my attention kept wavering. It is right on target during the Keith scenes, the Weevil scenes (damn every time I think that name, I think Weevils Wobble But they Won't Fall Down...stupid commericial jingles that will not leave your head once they get their claws in), and Logan. Found Veronica and Piz - boring. Veronica and the playbook case difficult to care about. Did however like Ed Begley Jr as the Dean. Can we get rid of Piz and focus on Mack and Wallace instead? At any rate, enjoyed last week's more than this week's which felt sort of lame and predictable in comparison.
There seems to be split - the people who did not like last week's love this week's, and I adored last week's but am sort of ambivalent about this week's. Wondering if it may have to do with what you like about Veronica. This week's episode was more "romantic" and focused more on the Logan/VM relationship as will next week's apparently. While last week's focused more on Mack, Wallace, Logan and Keith and the friendship factor. Did like seeing Weevil again. But missed MAck and Wallace.
Nip/Tuck - much better episode than last weeks. Giggled once or twice. Rosie O'Donnell has developed an interesting, sad, and somewhat sweet character. Also, now I know why I'm watching the show still - Liz. I adore the anesthiologist named Liz who manages somehow to bring out the best in Christian. She may also be the only redeemable character on the show, although the jury is out on that. Am getting tired of the sex jokes aimed a Christian, yes, yes, we know the man looks like a greek god and is fantastic in the sack, as well as jerk, that was set up in Season 1, can we move on please? Growth. I want to see growth. Stupid show. That said, the interaction between Rosie and Liz at the end of the episode made me cry - go Liz. I completely agree - Scean's kidney just is not good enough. Hee.
Didn't really watch anything else. Nothing else appeals to me on Tuesday Nights. Am sort of annoyed to hear that Fox is moving House back to its 9pm time slot after the World Series. Dang it. Why can't it just stay on at 8pm?
Tonight, I am happy to state, will not be watching the box. Am off to eat with a bunch of gluten-intolerant folks who I found on the net. Yes, it's my celiac meetup group. Tonight we check out Peter's Gourmet Diner - which serves gluten-free breads and gluten-free fries. Hoping not too expensive since it is a diner.
Cancellation Olympics:
Say goodbye to Runaways...not that anyone was watching Runaways or it would still be on, along with Kidnapped, Smith and Happy Hour. But Runaways is now cancelled.
The others on deathwatch betting list - which I consider odd picks are: Men in Trees, Vanished (one I keep voting for, so not so odd - except that it's still alive), Ugly Betty (very odd, it's doing well, better than Jericho), Help Me Help You, The Class (which is next to Men in Trees in the ranking), and The Knights of Prosperity (which hasn't even aired). Makes one wonder about the Brilliant But Cancelled Death Watch folks. Also about the biz in general. No rhyme or reason to it.
As bad as my life feels at times, I think to myself, yes it could be worse - I could be working in television.
If I were worrying about TV shows right now - I'd worry about anything that is on CW. CW's shows are in the ratings basement. So, yes, it is more likely VM will get cancelled than FNL or Studio 60.

Date: 2006-10-18 08:48 pm (UTC)Actually I'm not that worried about shows on the CW, neither UPN or WB were ever able to get network numbers. We'll see what happens, but I certainly hope VM is safe.

Date: 2006-10-19 04:07 am (UTC)But seriously, the reason is they only gave it 13 episodes this year not a full slate. (Dang, why couldn't they've done that with GG? Because GG gets higher numbers. Sigh.)
But you're right not to be too worried - ratings are hard to understand, but the reason WB and UPN stayed in the game and CW most likely will for a little while - is the younger demographic.
That's all that matters to them. The pre-18 crowd and the post-18 or 14-26. That was Buffy's market and that's Supernatural, Smallville, GG, and VM's.
Agree with you on VM. It takes a while for it to rev up. The first few episodes out always feel a tad off, then whammo! Either that or I'm just a sadistic television viewer and like to see characters have their world's fall apart? Possibly the later. Nah, I just like things to be shook up a bit.
