For those of us who can't watch Merlin on BBC or on the internet, which might just be me? It premieres on January 6 at 9/10pm on Syfy. The Momster adores it...more than I do. I watch it mainly for her. We discuss it, etc. The Momster has a weakness for these sorts of stories. (Except for Angel, which she didn't like that much because she thought David Boreanze was stiff and unattractive and an incredibly bad actor. The character was interesting, it was just horribly miscast in her opinion. Can't say she's completely wrong about that...but then I feel much the same way about Willow (Hannigan hit the brick wall in S6 and S7) and Buffy (ditto). (The exact opposite pov from Kidbro and sisinlaw who adored him in the role.) I'm guessing if Angel had been portrayed by someone else...this might not have been the case for the Momster.)

Aside on Sims? What language are these people speaking? "So-So"?

I feel similar about Angel and Buffy. They both were painfully bad in the beginning. They got better as they went along but never to heights were I would start to watch out for those actors instead of the characters.

I'll be doing a rewatch of Season 4 on SyFy, so I can watch it with closed captioning and find out what everyone was saying. Maybe catch a few things I missed.

They literally made up a language for them?
It sounds like a combination of Chinese and English, sort of sounds like the one used in Firefly actually...making me wonder if Whedon played Sims?

Considering they went mainly for the looks with Boreanaz, and watching his first episodes in BtVS, it's a miracle that he improved this much over the years. I still don't think he was a good actor in the end of the show (I haven't watched his later works), but the truth is, few of the cast were. SMG was seriously overrated and I never understood the uproar that she didn't get an Emmy. The best of the main bunch is probably Anthony Head, with Charisma Carpenter/Amber Benson being the worst. Still, I love these characters and I think it's due to give some serious credit to the crew for highlighting what was best in the stars and make an amazing show out of it.

Agreed on ASH, SMG, CC, and Boreanze.

Iffy on Amber Bensen. She was okay, no better or worse than Emma Caulfield or Alyson Hannigan.
But then neither was CC for that matter.

I'd rank them as follows:

1. ASH
2. James Marsters
3. Julie Benze
4. Juliet Landau
5. Amy Acker
6. Alexis Denisof
7. Glenn Quinn
8. SMG
9. Allison Hannigan
10. Nick Brendan
11. Amber Benson
12. Emma Caulfield
13. David Boreanze
14. Charisma Carpenter
15. Mercedes McNabe

[You can tell which had extensive theater training and experience - they could make listening to the phone book interesting, and which really didn't. The top six did, with possible exception of Julie Benze.]
