As you presumably know, California's recent court decision regarding same-sex marriage was a huge deal. It was historic, long overdue, and took a hell of a lot of fighting.

Unfortunately(and not surprisingly) Governor Schwarzenegger is receiving tons of phone calls from the supporters of 'Limits on Marriage' (the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in California) about his comment to a group of Log Cabin Republicans that he wouldn't support a constitutional amendment which discriminates against gays by defining marriage as only being between a man and woman.

We don't want him to go back on his word. So he needs to hear from us, too.

Calling to voice your support for California's gay marriage ruling means calling an automated system; you won't have to talk to anyone. And you can call even if you're not from California. So please, the more the better.

The number is 1-916-445-2841; press 1 (For English unless you prefer another language), 5 (Hot Issues), 1 to get to the particular issue, then press 1 again if you want to support upholding the court decision and are against a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

I do not understand why anyone with a modicum of intelligence or the ability to reason for themselves could possibly be against same-sex marriage.

I hope that Schwarzenegger will avoid doing anything to over-turn this court ruling, I think it has a lot of support across the state (particularly up here in the Bay area, of course). I believe that the court was really reflecting the current feelings of the citizens; back in 2000 there was a referendum banning same sex marriage, but a second referendum is being planned for this November and I think the vote will be much different if they do (for one thing, much greater voter turn out with many younger voters).

As I posted (http://cynesthesia.livejournal.com/74314.html) the day of the ruling there likely would be a ballot initiative in CA by the anti same-sex marriage faction trying to get around the court's decision. Sure enough, the Limit on Marriage Amendment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limit_on_Marriage_Amendment) got enough signatures to be make it on the November ballot. So while it's nice that Schwarzenegger said he was opposed to the amendment, he's not committing to much here since it's going to be in the hands of CA voters in the GE. I'll certainly be voting against any amendment trying to codify discrimination.

What's going to make the difference in CA is a well-funded campaign against the Limits amendment and a good GOTV effort in the fall to defeat it.

I just called--thanks for the heads-up, 'kat! With all the political email lists I'm on, I can't believe I hadn't heard about this chance to weigh in.
