shadowkat: (go ahead make my day)

Baaad day on black rock (that's a film by the way, an old western with Spencer Tracy, which I know zip about but that it's an old western with Spencer Tracy). [ETA: thanks to the comments below - it's not really a western, although TCM called it one in it's description on the DTV info box, baaad DTV writers! My Dad, at any rate confirmed this, not that I don't believe you, stating he'd seen it recently on TCM and that it is brilliant and I should make a point of seeing it someday. Apparently Spencer Tracy was nominated for an Oscar, and possibly won? Also it's been quoted a lot in Film Noir and film books. In short, add to netflix list if it doesn't reappear on TCM any time soon.]

Today started with me wanting to murder the computer people at work who managed to screw up my computer while doing an automatic migration of all the company's computers to a new server. Okay they didn't do it, the script or scrib did, not sure which, I can never understand computer geeks at work - they all speak some foreign language with a very thick slavic accent, no matter the workplace. [ETA: actually he doesn't have a thick slavic accent in person, just over the phone...]

They did fix it, eventually...it's always eventually. I did not handle it that well, I'm afraid (I squeaked and whined) partly due to a lack of sleep the night before, and the shitload of work I needed to finish and was stressing over, which was prevented by the annoying computer malfunctions. If it ain't broke? Trust the computer geek squad to break it and then take two hours more of your time fiddling about to fix it. So That's how they keep their jobs? Now we know.

MEME - I don't feel like fiddling with html script, so hopefully you can make it out.

Name:

shadowkat (what? you think I'd give my real one, not that it matters of course since most people already know it and there's only about 300 people online with the exact same real name, but...you know. (by the way I've been using that last bit of slang far too much lately, no clue where I picked it up from, but must resist continued usage.)

Age: 41 (have no qualms about this...)

Location: Brooklyn, (NY, USA - this last part may be a bit obvious. Unless there are other Brooklyn's around the planet and other New York's??)

Gender: Female (sort of obvious - since I tend to only use female icons and post like a girl well most of the time.)

How long have you been into Angel: The Series and/or, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and/or Firefly/Serenity? Too long. (Since it aired, which was 1997, with frequent laspses or drifts away...like any compulsive habit - you go nuts over it, you get bored, you go nuts again, you get bored, you go nuts, you think it's time to give it up and move on, you go back because it's comforting and makes you happy - like the Harry Potter books do, or Proust, or PG Wodehouse.)

Favourite Heroes(s)?: Buffy, Spike, Angel, Mal,

Favourite Sidekick(s)?: Wesely, Xander, Illyria/Fred, Willow, Jayne, Zoe and Wash

Favourite Monster(s)? Angelus, Spike, Drusilla, Darla, Glorifucus, The Trioka (I like the human brand of villian with less silly makeup with the possible exception of The Gentleman which were truly horrifying.)

Favourite Ship(s)/Slash(es)? Spike/Buffy (and no snark about loving abusive relationships, they were all abusive people. Name one that wasn't in some way. They are after all "horror" shows!), Spike/Angel, Illyria/Spike, Illyria/Wes, Lilah/Wes, Faith/Angel, Willow/Xander, Xander/Spike, Xander/Anya, Anya/Spike, Giles/Jenny, Giles/Joyce, Giles/Ethan, Zoe/Wash, Mal/Inara, Darla/Angel, Drusilla/Spike, Drusilla/Darla
Lindsey/Darla

Favorite Episode(s)?: Beneath You, Fool for Love, Smashed, Becoming II, Innocence, Passion, Tabula Rasa, Once More with Feeling, Destiny, Smile Time, Consequences, Enemies, Dopplegangland, Dead Things (although I find it difficult to rewatch certain sections without wincing, so fast-forward), Lover's Walk (does get old after five viewings, haven't re-watched in ages), School Hard, What's My Line Part II, Obects in Space, War Crimes, Serenity (the episode not the movie), Darla, Dear Boy, the Faith two-parter arc on Angel S1 can't remember the name of, Loyalty, Home, Room with A View, Intervention (sick episode if one thinks about it, but oddly funny and endearing...that's what a good writer can do.) , Selfless

Least favorite episode(s)?: Bad Eggs, Most of S1 (with the exception of the first two episodes, The Pack, Nightmares, Angel, and Prophecy Girl) Go Fish, The Zeppo, The I in Team, Where the Wild Things Are, Wild at Heart, (the other werewolf episode in S2) - (not a fan of werewolves - they look really silly on tv), the portion of S3 Angel between Lullaby and Loyalty, the portion of S2 Angel after Darla left the show (or the last four episodes of that season), Most of the first half of Season 1 Angel, with the exception of Room with a View, Jayne Town, and the episode of Firefly with everyone at the ball.

What non-Jossverse fandoms are you into?: None (don't really do fandoms - been into tv shows, but not enough to post like I did with Buffy. As they say - timing is everything.)

Favorite ships/characters in those fandoms?: None

What do you post about in your lj?: Everything under the sun, moon, and stars - ie. Spontaneous Musings - is literally just that. Whatever fits my mood. And my writing style often changes to fit it as well.

Anything else?: (Ummm...time to go to bed not been sleeping grandly, stressed out of my gorge at work, and depressed that I have no time to build a social life? Nah, you don't want to hear thaaat.) I read fanfic, but rarely admit to it. Best right now are rahriah's scrabbles or short Spuffy stories. Which make me smile. Totally G rated. Just about the little day to day things. I miss beanbeans Blue Skies - which she kept promising to finish and clearly never will - I've written fanfic in my head on that one. I've written fanfic, weird fanfic, which I think scared people off. Mostly just wrote essays, lots and lots of weird essays, which for a while got a heck of a lot of attention, now, luckily or unluckily depending on mood and your pov, not so much. (Had mixed feelings about all the attention.)

which I know zip about

It's actually a detective story set in a mid 20th century western town rather than a western, but the bad-day-caused-by-other-folks part is very much apropos.

And it uses the western trope of stranger coming into town... but also the noir trope of someone coming to uncover secrets the locals would rather keep hidden.

Much sympathy on the computers-at-work thing: we are quite used in my workplace to something apparently completely unrelated going wrong every time they do an upgrade or add new software - like messing up existing settings.

I was quite astonished by the ruthlessness with which they killed off a certain character, which I may have been wrong but struck me as something movies of that time Just Would Not Do.

I don't know how they killed them off, having not seen the film, but if my guess is correct?

It is not so surprising really, and typical of the genre. You should see some of the old episodes of Gunsmoke - the black and white ones. That show was really dark when it started. Much darker than most of the tv shows on now. People don't realize it - but the Sheild wasn't the first anti-hero show on TV. (Have Gun Will Travel - was one.) People think that the gritty/dark dramas started in 1960s and 1970s, but sooo not true. Fritz Lang's "M" was in the 1930's, I believe or somewhere around there. And some of the early Westerns were pretty brutal.

That time period was odd - the dark/gritty dramas were often in black and white, while the blockbuster, pretty flicks often in color. Although there were a few exceptions.

Thank you. I've come to dread software upgrades and migrations.

And it looks like I need to rent this movie at some point.

I hope you are TiVoing Burn Notice tonight! (and I hope it is a good start to the new season!)

But mostly I hope you have an easier Friday and a great weekend...

Actually it's a DVR. I know they look similar, but are in fact quite different - in that I can't download stuff to it from my computer or save up to 100 hours or do a "season pass", what I do instead is just say "record all first run episodes" and it does without requiring any reprogramming. Also it's cheaper - because I don't own the box, Time Warner does, and I just pay the subscription rate. Tivo's cost anywhere between 100-500 bucks, last I checked (might be cheaper) for the box, and closer to 10 bucks for subscription. They do more, but are much more expensive and you have to install them and upkeep them and repair them - Time Warner doesn't do it for you. (Only telling you this in case you ever consider getting one.)

Yep, saw Burn Notice tonight! It was great. Really love that show.

Yeah, I love it too...
I've never had a DVR or a TiVo....
I'm still using a Video recorder w/basic cable, but I may change eventually (I don't think I'm saving any money as it is, Comcast cable is currently charging more for basic cable than digital... although I still figure that their digital cost is only a temporary, not a permanent price)

But you're right: it would be easier to just set it up to tape new shows!

All of my cable switches were partly out of necessity. Can't do broadcast tv - no reception in my apartment for it. Basic Cable - had all sorts of issues, and well the last straw was in 2001 when a bunch of Buffy episodes got garbled, so went to DTV. Then upgraded again. I also discovered it was cheaper than what I had, at the time I had HBO and Showtime, along with Basic. DTV was oddly cheaper, got more channels such as TCM, IFC, and Sundance, just no HBO and Showtime, which I decided I could live without. DVR came along - when my VCR died on me. It just decided not to work anymore. And again, cheaper and easier to get DVR. Plus none of those silly tapes taking up space.

I probably would have held out longer if those things hadn't happened. Tivo and DVR's had been out for about three years, before I got one as it is. ;-)

when I moved here basic cable was around $30/month, way less than any other option... but after 2 years it has almost doubled. It would be MUCH better to get digital (my apartment building doesn't allow Dish network as an option) except that I would then have to get DVR because you can't tape one show when you watch another on digital cable.... I've liked having video recordings and keep them and share them.

But I guess it is time for me to switch over, or wait until Dexter is restarting so I can get some free Showtime for a little while... I'd love to see the 3rd season of Dexter!
