Things I've learned the hard way (by doing them all myself, too many times to count. These are in the been there, done that, category):
1. If you plan on doing filters on your lj? Don't tell people.
2. If someone sends you a nasty email, text-message, or a response to your lj that makes you want to cry, scream, or kick the person - delete the email, and if a response? Say nothing. Ignore. Silence sometimes speaks better than words and gets one into far less trouble. Plus when you are silent they have no idea if you hate them, love them, or merely were too busy to see it or just didn't get it.
3. If you flock a post, don't tell people on an unflocked post that you flocked the previous one and this is a comment on that. Flock both posts or unflock both posts.
4. Don't take anything said on your flist personally --- which granted seems impossible about 99% of the time. But don't. Chances are? They aren't posting about you. OR in many cases, JUST about you. If they don't state your name, ignore it, and assume they are talking about someone or something else.
5. Do not defriend or get upset with someone just because they hate your favorite fictional character/tv show/book/film or adore your least favorite/most hated fictional character/tv show/book/film.
6. Do not respond to posts that make you want to hit the person or attack them. EVER. No good can come of it.
7. When posting on politics and/or religion, keep in mind that the other point of view is NOT evil.
8. Do not go out in drenching rain regardless of how big an umbrella you have - or if you do, be sure to put everything you don't want to get wet in a sealed plastic bag, along with a spare pair of shoes, socks, and clothes.
9. Do not give unasked for advice...and if you do, try not to sound like a patronizing shithead.
10. When responding to a post on lj, first make sure you've actually READ the post and ALL the Comments accompanying it.
And
11. Do not post on lj when you are cranky and want to hit things...no good can come of this.
[This goes under the category of don't kick your dog because you had a bad day...even if it is very very tempting and the dog peed on your favorite rug, which come to think of it is one of the many many reasons I don't own a dog.]

one of these things is not like the others....
Date: 2009-06-19 03:17 am (UTC)And I also love all your other comments about lj; it is true that we have all created our own lj accounts for our own purposes, and those accounts are intensely personal to us, but too often we only look at it from our own POV and ignore the intensely personal feelings of those we friend, de-friend, lock out of posts, and/or any other interaction here....
Being online is often like walking through a mine field.
Your post should be taken to heart by everyone here!

Date: 2009-06-20 12:37 am (UTC)I've lost count of the number of people who I have pissed off and vice versa. Some numerous times. We push each other's buttons.
It's hard interacting with folks...there's always landmines. Avoiding them sometimes feels a bit like doing the hokey pokey.

....or at least, you should pretend it's not for the sake of public peace and order :D

Date: 2009-06-20 12:23 am (UTC)Yes, amongst other things. I should probably say it's not that I think the other point of view is evil so much as just incredibly puerile and stupid, which I guess is in some respects worse? Hee.
