shadowkat: (just breath)

Difficult day. Bio-chemistry is completely off again, so slept miserably last night, complete with the night sweats (even with the air conditioning on) and felt hot and flushed all day long. Haven't felt like this in a while - so am guessing it's dietary related, which means I've got to do some rethinking diet wise, cut back on eating, cut back on sugar/salt intake and alcohol. Maybe go off some of this entirely. Ick. I hate getting older.

Freaked a bit when I found out via flist that geocities is shutting down all their sites and links, which means if your site was on geocities - it will be gone soon. I'd saved over 50 essays on geocities. All written, frighteningly enough between 2002-2004. Actually 90% were written between Feb 2002 and November 2002. Bad time. Very bad time. Some people cope with pills and alcohol, me? I wrote Buffy essays. I'm sure there are better ways...but what works, works.

It's odd that I freaked, considering just a few months ago - I was thinking of taking down the essays myself. But tonight? I spent two hours manically transferring them to my lj - because there is no where else I can store them - hard drive isn't really a good option, takes up too much room. Also the cut past didn't work as well. Was much faster just migrating them here. May move them again to Dreamwidth - haven't decided yet. You've only been spammed by ten - fifteen of them, all behind cut tags, or you would be well within your rights to defriend me for spamming your reading lists with twenty page essays that you don't give a rat's ass about. [**ETA: I migrated over 50 to my lj, they have all been made "JUST ME: PRIVATE". (If you see my Restless or Robot Metaphor or Authority Figures essays let me know, because those were made private.) I did make fifteen or so open to the public, because they pertained to things discussed in recent posts and I'd thought they might be of interest to some of my new readers, regarding the comic book characters arcs. Shouldn't be an issue, since all behind cut-tags tabs, so take up no space, also, like I said - tis a one time thing. Won't happen again.] If one is not polite to others, one suffers the consequences.

Anyhow, sorry for the mini-spam. It's an one night only thing. Promise.

Here's a suggestion, in case you'd like your essays up on an actual website-looking website instead of LJ.

OTW has made this announcement: OTW's GeoCities Rescue Project (http://transformativeworks.org/announcing-otws-geocities-rescue-project)

Also, just for future reference, if you want to post something but not have it show up on other people's flists:

1) Click the little "Edit" link next to your Date (I assume you're posting using a web browser (http://www.livejournal.com/update.bml)).

2) You'll see the "Date Out Of Order" checkbox. Just click that, and when you post your entry, it'll get posted to your journal without showing up on other people's flists.

Thanks. But...Huh? Date out of order??? (Didn't see that.)

I just clicked "Just Me: Private". (Most of the essays, about 65% aren't visible. )

Once you click the little "Edit" link next to your date, the webpage should change and show your month, day, year, and time as editable fields. Below that should be a checkbox for "Date Out of Order".

Making the posts private work too.

Maybe consider an external hard drive? They're both big and fairly cheap these days. You could back up your whole PC and still have room for plenty of essays.

no one could object to you bringing your wonderful essays over here to your lj, I truly can't imagine anyone defriending... instead I would expect more people to want to follow you!

I'm glad you are saving these, I've kept that link to the old location and have gone back to read essays there from time to time... Now I'll just book mark this section of your lj.

thanks!

Thank you for this response. Was feeling a bit self-conscious about it.

You sort of inspire me to go back to it later tonight or tomorrow and unprivatize several of them. I privatized about 80% of them.

If people defriended me over a bunch of essays that are hidden behind an "lj-cut" tab which take up 0 room, considering some of the things they've spammed over the years (some of which almost caused my computer to crash when I was on dial-up - note streaming video spams should always be behind lj-cut's to protect people who have dial-ups), I'm not sure I want them as friends anyhow.

Well definitely the current posts that are showing take up less space than a single picture spam post of mine would take up... and loads onto the page way quicker!
I think you should feel free to put all your stuff up here and at others sites too (just to be sure you have things backed up online).
I've saved a lot of documents at my gmail account (attaching them and sending them to myself), and they are safely stored, but inaccessible because it turns out that word perfect documents can't be opened on my new iMac(!)...
technology is a huge convenience, and a huge pain in the neck!

You are actually very considerate and polite with your posts and you don't post that often.

And thank you.

I've tried gmail, but have one teeny problem - I keep forgetting my account or where it is. LOL! I swear you need a rollerdeck to keep track of all of the passwords, password updates and account names.

May I say I'm happy you didn't delete these essays? I've only recently discovered them and took great pleasure in reading them (not all though, because it's time consuming) and even recced two of them in my own LJ. :)
