Here's the thing about posting polls - if you screw up, you can't go back and edit them.
So, keep that in mind when you read this. The other problem with polls, hence the reason I don't do them that often - is they are sort of pointless if no-one does it or only 10 people do it. And well, I always leave something out.

The reason I'm posting this - is I've been reading fanfic off and on again. Hunting for something to scratch an itch, haven't quite found it. So got curious about how others write and read it. What inspires them. What kinks turn them on. I left out the negative crap. Also chose not to ask about ships, because I don't have enough ticky boxes to list all the possible ships in every show that my flist writes about. You'd need 50-60 ticky boxes. So did this as a more general poll - with the hopes it will include everyone. And yes, I know, I left Supernatural off the ticky boxes at the end, but I ran out of ticky boxes - so if you're show or book or whatever isn't listed, feel free to mark other and mention in comments.

Also if you take the poll and know of any fanfics in your area of fandom you want to or would like to recommend - either do it in the comments or just link to an entry in your journal. They can be one's you have written.

[*RPF fic has a bad rep, which is odd considering how much of it has actually been published. Joyce Carol Oats published RPF on Norma Jean. The person does, normally have to be dead for it to be published. But the film Shakespeare in Love is technically RPF fic.]

ETA on Sunday, 9:40 am: Whoops! Apparently I don't know the definition of "bullet-proof" kinks and should have just put "kinks". My bad, guys and gals! Ignore the bullet-proof and just put whatever kinks you have. Crappy writing turns me off of stuff as well. What I meant was kinks that turn you on in fanfic.

I have no bulletproof kinks. There's nothing I love so much that crappy writing won't turn me off of it.

Your icon just made me laugh like a loon. Captain Jack *so* approves!

I made that after several people I knew started making sincere but brain-breaking attempts to map Doctor/Jack/John onto Buffy/Angel/Spike. And just... no.

LMAO! Your comment with the icon made me laugh really hard.
I did not know that. Although, I can see people doing it.
Agreed. Just. No.

. . . yeah, that triangle's missing a few angles, all right. Chief among which is that Cap'n John would purely appall the Doctor.

Considering the Doctor is slightly appalled by Captain Jack...I think that is very true.

Also last time I checked Cap'n John wasn't immortal.
Nor is Buffy for that matter. LOL!

People do love to compare apples to oranges, don't they? ;-)

I screwed up on that category - shouldn't have put "bullet-proof". Sorry about that. Have done an ETA above to explain.

I wondered about that, since most of the things you listed were the very reason(s) I cannot read most fan fic!

One person's kinks/turn-on are often another's button/turnoff - hence the term kink. Kink is often something we are afraid to admit to for fear someone will blast us for it or make fun of us for it. Granted it is not personal...but we take it personally. This is why Discussions about it or indirect denounciations of certain kinks - have lead to many a flamewar. Which is why I decided not to do turn-offs/buttons. ;-)

[FYI: I'm not a fan of babyfic and grudge fic. But I completely get why others adore it.]

No, my clarification was based on the fact that a lot of people understandably interpreted my kink category to mean fanfic that you will read no matter what, regardless of how badly written it is. Uh no. I meant what turns you on to it - what itch do you need scratching.

It is hard to define. I'm moody. Right now - I want something specific...but am having troubles defining it. I know what I don't want.

Yeah, that makes a difference. OTOH, it's still not like I specifically go looking for time travel fics, or whatnot, even though I like them when they're done well. And there are some things I write a lot of (domestic fics, for example) that I often actively avoid when reading because they're so hard to find done well.

I'm more or less the same way when it comes to kinks and reading/writing. What I write often is NOT what I will read fanfic wise.

Also, I've realized today that I did not list one of my biggest kinks - which is the male as damsel. Not weak necessarily - but a damsel, in which the female hero has to save. But it's not the same as say saving someone - like you might in reality. No, I like it when they save them from a villian or bad guy - the action save as opposed to the other save.
