Here's the thing about posting polls - if you screw up, you can't go back and edit them.
So, keep that in mind when you read this. The other problem with polls, hence the reason I don't do them that often - is they are sort of pointless if no-one does it or only 10 people do it. And well, I always leave something out.

The reason I'm posting this - is I've been reading fanfic off and on again. Hunting for something to scratch an itch, haven't quite found it. So got curious about how others write and read it. What inspires them. What kinks turn them on. I left out the negative crap. Also chose not to ask about ships, because I don't have enough ticky boxes to list all the possible ships in every show that my flist writes about. You'd need 50-60 ticky boxes. So did this as a more general poll - with the hopes it will include everyone. And yes, I know, I left Supernatural off the ticky boxes at the end, but I ran out of ticky boxes - so if you're show or book or whatever isn't listed, feel free to mark other and mention in comments.

Also if you take the poll and know of any fanfics in your area of fandom you want to or would like to recommend - either do it in the comments or just link to an entry in your journal. They can be one's you have written.

[*RPF fic has a bad rep, which is odd considering how much of it has actually been published. Joyce Carol Oats published RPF on Norma Jean. The person does, normally have to be dead for it to be published. But the film Shakespeare in Love is technically RPF fic.]

ETA on Sunday, 9:40 am: Whoops! Apparently I don't know the definition of "bullet-proof" kinks and should have just put "kinks". My bad, guys and gals! Ignore the bullet-proof and just put whatever kinks you have. Crappy writing turns me off of stuff as well. What I meant was kinks that turn you on in fanfic.

I had a phase of reading big long-form fanfics like Necessary Evil and Herself's Bittersweets around the time Buffy S6/7 was on but as the fic diverged from the series and I preferred the series I more or less stopped and switched to fluff and high school AUs before stopping all all together after geting my own LJ. I think part of that may have been being finally able to participate in the meta and vid sides of fandom whereas writing stories is something that's always completely terrified me. But I have been following a few TSCC fics recently. [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shifthas a WIP called "Out on the Wire" (http://halcyon-shift.livejournal.com/tag/verse:+out+on+the+wire).

Thanks for the rec.

I realized after posting last night that I forgot to list TSCC as one of the fandoms...course I did run out of ticky boxes.;-)

I am sort of the same way in regards to writing fanfic...don't get me wrong, I love writing stories, but posting fanfic that I've written has always been hard for me. For some reason it's easier to post essays or meta, than it is fic. It is very weird.

A) You used to read fanfic
B) You used to read Spuffy fanfic

Not at all surprised that you disliked it, but I'd always assumed that your dislike was based on general principle rather than specific experience.

I'm horribly unprincipled as a general rule. I read a lot of fic back in the day, the vast majority of it Spuffy and liked it just fine at the time. I'm sorry I never left you any feedback. But then the fandom splintered, Spuffy aredemptionista became a minority taste and it began to be too easy to see where any given writer was coming from and harder to enjoy the writing independently of that. Also I love to argue (my bad), hated not being able to respond in kind and genuinely preferred what they were doing in the show to any of the fic.

Well, you did once leave me feedback of a sort - you compared my writing to Silas Marner. Given that, it's honestly more depressing to know that you actually read it.

I did and I regret it. I think I was going for mischievous and only achieved obnoxious.

Eh, don't worry about it. Does me good to be reminded I can't please everyone once in a while.

I found myself nodding and chuckling along with your response. Because yes, I'm the same way.

I love to argue too much for my own good, because I have a temper and it can get the better of me. (Poor herself_nyc, the one fanfic writer that I chose to comment on and realized rather quickly that my critiques were not wanted. We had this long thread of people saying the opposite of me, which was sort of funny in hindsight, not at the time. So stopped commenting on fanfic unless it really blew me away. Meta is easier.)

Also, I admit, in some ways I prefer the series to the fanfic, or I preferred where the series went. I like how the Buffy series ended. And I liked how Angel ended. The characters arcs made sense to me - during my re-watch, I'm see that all the more.
I'm a bit on the fence regarding the comics, but clearly like them enough to keep buying them. ;-)

But I'm inconsistent. I still read fanfic. Often fanfic that takes place after Not Fade Away, or fills in the gaps. Rarely stuff that is AU or takes place before Not Fade Away and goes AU - although I have read it.

My Dad has a story about the first time he took Mum home for tea to meet my Gran. She left the 'meeting' almost in tears because she thought she's just witnessed Dad and Gran having a blazing row but in fact it was just their version of normal friendly conversation. Sadly I'm my father's daughter in that respect. Raised by wolves (a wolf).
