A Somewhat Risky Meme
Jan. 20th, 2010 01:24 pmI ganked this from
anne1962. I never do these memes, because I don't know how to respond to them myself to be honest...and I'm always a bit afraid no one else will. They are like polls, if no one responds...you are sort of sitting there with egg on your face. But here it goes...just because I'm curious to see...assuming you do respond? And I honestly don't think there's much to be suprised by...but one never knows. Into the breach...
What's surprised you the most about me (if anything) since beginning to read my LJ (or when you met me IRL, for those who have)? Has anything about me been completely unexpected or have I always fit the picture of me you had in your head?

Date: 2010-01-20 08:07 pm (UTC)Certainly wasn't the career I'd planned for myself. Lots of number analysis, writing, negotiation, and detail. But ironically enough, the best job I've had. People are pleasant. Duties relatively interesting. Pay relatively good. Commute not all that bad. And...I appear to be really good at it. .go figure.
What more can I ask for in this economy? ;-)

Should I mention that it always surprises me how much you have loved soaps? lol

Date: 2010-01-21 03:29 am (UTC)Regardins soaps? I only watch one, actually, not counting Dollhouse, Grey's, Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters,
The Good Wife, BattleStar Galatica, Caprica, and the Buffy comics - which are also soap operas. Whedon and Ron Moore are very good soap opera writers. ;-) But I only currently watch one that airs in the daytime - which I tape.
I got into them through my mothers (mother and Granny) - it was something we could talk about that we had in common and enjoyed which did not involve politics or religion or family.
We analyzed and critiqued and ragged on and squeed over them in much the same way people squee, critique, analyze, and rag, and predict and puzzle out Buffy or Dollhouse. It's no different. Although I'll state that the plotlines are often less predictable (due to the fact that the writers will often change their minds in mid-stream or the story thread doesn't work), the spoilers far less reliable (same reason), there's far more subplots, and often the emotional payoff is better, it can also be worse. Varies. But much like Buffy - patience pays off. Hee.
But I got into it and am still into it...because of my mother.
It is something private that I only share with her and no one else. Did the same with her mother, my Granny. I used to come home from school, often upset, and she'd make me laugh by regaling me with the adventures of Mimi and the mummified corspe from the soap opera Texas. I sometimes think what makes stories powerful is not the writer, not how they are told, but how we interact with them and retell them to each other.
Thanks for the reply, by the way...sorry probably more than you wanted to know.;-)
