I need to add icons to DW, since I prefer posting to it than LJ - for three reasons: 1) no ads,
2) no video ads, and 3) no Facebook or Twitter ticky boxes.
Still haven't figured out how to put a link so people on lj can just come here and respond.
Wicked lighting storm outside. Keeps flashing and rumbling, with rain, but mostly crashes of thunder and lightning.
Decided against better judgment and mostly out of curiousity to check out those Buffy issue 37 preview pages online and you know what? a) I get the Mac Love now - because those comic pages are much easier to read and really pretty on a computer with a backlight, my old one was sorely lacking in that department and b) I think Whedon's trying to write an absurdist satire of a super-hero comic book, yet really badly. Paging Ben Edlund, who actually knows how to do this. If you've ever seen the Tick, you know whereof I speak. As for the shower scene? Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Besides, Buffy was stinky. Really stinky. As in hold your nose and try not to vomit stinky. It was either make her take a shower or make her sit outside with the clouds. (If you want the story behind the bugs and the alien ship? No reason why you should..but if you do, check out Bryan Lynch's Spike miniseries. And I'm not promising to review it, because I'm not sure if I'll read all of it yet. My interest in the comics along with the fandom, methinks is waning.) You know you are having a problem with the comic books when the only characters who make sense and are likable as both a relationship and as individuals are Dawn and Xander. No offense to Dawn and Xander shippers. But I'm guessing you guys are loving these comic books. Although, Dawn is going die. You all know that right? It's not exactly a spoiler. I mean come on, she's Xander's love interest. Xander's love interests either die, boink Angel and become evil then die (or if they are Buffy, boink Angel and Angel becomes evil etc), or become lesbians. Seriously, is it just me or does Xander have the worst luck? Sometimes I think the series should have been called the trials and tribulations of noble and heroic Xander the everyman's love life or lack thereof. (Did Whedon get dumped a lot in high school or something?) Men - they think they are writing about empowered women, when in reality they are basically writing about their own fantasies regarding empowered women. (Not all men, obviously, just television writers and comic book writers - who are heterosexual.)
Momster just called to tell me to get off the internet and get ready for bed. So will comply. Being on net late at night makes sleeping difficult. It wires my mind. Best way to go to sleep - read a boring book. To which Momster replied - "literary books put me to sleep. But easy reads that are page turners don't for some reason." ME: "Like I said, read a boring book. Literary books tend to be boring...which is why most people don't read them, generally speaking."
Oh final bit - watching this funky sitcom called Raising Hope...that I'm not sure what to make of it. It's sort of Married with Children crossed with Roseanne crossed with that funky series about the boy in the middle that the actor who is the star of Breaking Bad used to be in that I can't remember the name of. It's not bad. Reminds me a bit of the docu comedies such as Arrested Development and Parks and Recreation in both casting choices and sense of humor, although definitely not a dcoumentary. In some respects it is quite realistic and darkly humorous, like Married with Children. Also unlike most of these shows the men and women are various shapes, sizes and looks. They don't all look alike! And the women aren't all pretty like in Modern Family. Martha Plimpton plays this twenty-year old's mother. Said twenty-year old suddenly ended up with a kid, due to the fact he had sex with a hot female serial killer who got the death penalty. The female serial killer was in the habit of killing all her boyfriends, except our hero, whose mother knocked her out with a tv set. See what I mean? Absurdist humor. It's blunt and satirical and wry. But not really that funny. Just sort of absurd. Am on the fence. At least it's different, will give it that. So much of tv looks the same nowadays. A little innovation goes a long way. What can I say? I like the cult shows over the mainstream...well most of the time.

It would make sense. The whole thing reads like a grudge fic with a budget. The college comment sealed that opinion for me.

Date: 2010-09-23 04:42 pm (UTC)It does, doesn't it? Not only a grudge fic but a grudge fic that puts all other grudge fics to shame. I find it fascinating that Whedon is doing it - I mean I've never seen a writer desicrate (sp?) and/or regress his lead and main protagonists to quite this degree before. Plus the plot is hilariously silly. Seed of Wonder is the source of all magic and acts like a cork keeping the evil demons from invading from other dimensions...alrighty, then. LOL! Half tempted to pick up the thing just to ruthlessly mock and snark at it.

On days when I'm feeling less cynical, I wonder if he's foolishly attempting to rip on the stereotypical comic narrative by writing a stereotypical comic narrative. He did the same sort of thing with Dollhouse.
On more cynical days, I do think it actually is a grudge fic, either because he dislikes the public view of the characters (sort of like Chase and Tony Soprano) or he resents the actors who played them and thinks they destroyed the universe. Like I said, the education line seems directed at someone other than Buffy 'cause Spike knows that Buffy did go to college and why she had to leave and also it's completely irrelevant to the situation. A Freudian slip on Joss's part, maybe.

Date: 2010-09-23 10:12 pm (UTC)No, if it's a grudge fic - it's against Fox and the power behind Hollywood. The people who have power over him. The actors? Really don't. (Except for Barr and Sutherland - who did.)
And yes, a lot of the people at the top of the Hollywood food chain never got a college degree, believe it or not. It's a weird biz. I interviewed a tv producer once - powerful and successful guy, who had no degree outside of a high school diploma.

Date: 2010-09-23 04:37 pm (UTC)It was funny, without utterly embarrassing the main characters, which would have instantly activated my embarrassment squick, which is pretty much the death knell for any series as far as I'm concerned.
Agreed. Feel much the same way. Unfortunately 85-90% of the comedies in the US tend to activate my embarrassment squick either within the first fifteen minutes or by the second episode. Which is why I don't tend to watch the vast majority of situation comedies.
So far, Raising Hope hasn't...doesn't mean it won't - it's a US sitcom, that seems to be par for the course with those things. But so far, so good. The Big Bang Theory came really really close a couple of times, but so far it's infrequent enough that I can continue watching for now.
The other's I gave up on.

Make sure you've got the 'crosspost by default' thing checked. :)

Spoooooon! I love the Tick.
As for the shower scene? Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
Yeah, that's my feeling too. (Also, Spike and Buffy have been there, done that.)
Anyway, I think I might have to friend you, since you keep writing interesting things. Would you mind?

Also thanks for the info for dreamwidth. May have to use that.
Still haven't figured out how to get rid of the Facebook ticky box.
Although at least Twitter's has gone by-by.
The Tick was wonderful. I particularly adored the cartoon series. That's how you do superhero comic satire! ;-)

For comments (on your own LJ), this works very well. (And is so straightforward that even *I* could do it.)
I've only seen the cartoon series of the Tick - my brother-in-law gave us a pirated DVD which we treasure muchly! - and it is truly fabulous. Die Fledermaus, in particular, cracks me up, just because of the name. Also "Not Earth! That's where I keep all my stuff!" is one of those phrases that can make me chuckle at very inopportune moments...

Date: 2010-09-25 04:08 pm (UTC)What LJ fails to understand is there is a reason 85% of us aren't using our real names and flock our journals on occasion. I get that they want to make money, but why not make the option - an actual option, instead of automatic? Ugh. No wonder so many of us are posting from DW now.
