Dec. 17th, 2010 09:40 pmMade it safely to Hilton Head, on parent's computer. Have a question - anyone know how to login to your own Facebook page, while on someone else's computer? I try and end up on my parents Facebook pages.
Oh, as an aside, two hours after I got here? All the stress and anxiety just melted away. Now if I could only get rid of the lingering cough that pops up every once and awhile.
Made it to Part II of the Hunger Games - had a lot of time to read in the airport - since plane was delayed two hours. I got to the airport at 6:30, strolled through security without incident by 7, only to discover flight was delayed until 11:03 am. The airline did call people, but I left before they called me. And well, was taking a car service so wouldn't have mattered.
The Hunger Games is turning into quite the wicked satire of our plastic surgery, image laden, technology and reality show obsessed society. Clever. Reminds me more and more of Ronald Dahl.
Suzanne Collins is taking a page from J. K Rowlings. Except she's a bit more wicked in her tale,
and a little less fantastical, but it is sci-fi not fantasy, so that may well be the difference.
In other words the Hunger Games actually has more in common with Harry then Twilight at least in style and tone.

Date: 2010-12-18 03:14 pm (UTC)I agree w/you that Hunger Games has zero to do w/Twilight... all though I think it is a little too dystopian to be very Harry Potter either (it is definitely Sci-fi, not fantasy)... but like you I loved how she satirizes so much in our society.
Have a lovely relaxing holiday!

Date: 2010-12-18 03:42 pm (UTC)Ronald Dahl's novels.
Rowlings is more into fine detail - both in world and character. Which is why she stands above the others - her writing is more intricate in its fine detail.
Also, it's Sci-Fi, dark utopia - and in that regard has far more in common with Roger Cormier - "Chocolat War", Fielding - "Lord of the Flies", Shirley Jackson - "The Lottery", and Logan's Run. As well as "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley.
While Rowlings is far lighter and fantasy. Fantasy isn't necessarily lighter than sci-fi, but in this case it is.
Also both Twilight and Rowlings - which are both fantasy novels tend to take place more or less in our world. Rowlings satirizes the political issues in Britian, particularly divisions of class or class politics (whic makes sense, Welfare Mom), while Meyer wouldn't know what satire was if it hit her over the head with a baseball bat - Meyer's interested in preaching her own values and religious stuff. And Collins, a former television and screenwriter who has worked in Hollywood is satirizing American pop culture and Hollywood or a world ruled by it. Hee - writers really do just write about themselves in the end don't they? ;-)
Hmmm...too much trouble to get on Facebook, and I could screw up my parents ability to do it - so not worth it. Will have to do belated holiday greetings.
