The poll below is well what it looks like - a poll to stave off general boredom. I have no idea what to call the thing - Culture Poll with Weather and a few other quirky non-related poll questions??

Since it is a poll and I suck at editing these things and never pre-plan them, there are no doubt tons of errors. My apologies, but can't change them. It is what it is. Tried to leave an "other option" for all categories...because I reached my limit (lj cuts you off at a certain point, not sure what DW would do since I can't figure out how to do it in DW). Thought about asking what your favorite relationship was, but there are more relationship possibilities that you could adore than there are radio buttons, even if I excluded Buffy entirely, I'd still have problems limiting the # choices. So, if you want you can answer that in comments?

This is all radio buttons - because I want a more definite result. If you can't make up your mind or it doesn't apply, just skip those questions that don't work for you - god knows I will.

Thanks for taking my poll. Hope it's more than ten people - one can never tell with these things. Be depressing if it's less. Will state, that's the risk I always take with polls. It's the risk we all take, I guess.

So here it goes:

The Middle isn't my favorite comedy but it gets so little love and I like it a lot, I just had to choose it.

Many difficult questions. I chose 2001/2010 for SF, but I've only actually seen 2001--but 2001 (somewhat narrowly) beats out Blade Runner as my favourite SF film, so I went with that anyway.

For comedy I said The Office, but the UK Office--I remember you saying before that David Brent reminds you of a boss you used to have who was deeply unpleasant, so I know you're not a fan. But I love it irrationally. It's warmhearted despite a chilly exterior. And it's humour constructed out of awkward pauses, which I relate to in my own life. The US Office I also like, though not so much the last few seasons.

Interestingly enough I almost just put The Office (UK version) but changed it to the Office - so could provide wider choice.

Can't really watch either - in part because of past work situations. ;-) But Ricky Gervais does a dead-on impression of the Boss I had at that time (about 8 years ago - don't have him anymore, moved on thank god). A co-worker at that time, who reported to the same Boss - also attempted to watch the British version and had the same response I did. It was so close, that it was almost as if Gervais had studied our boss' mannerisms to develop the role.

Had a hard time with comedies. It varies with my mood and how well the most recent episode went over.

Harder time with procedurals as I basically don't watch them (unless it's a sci-fi version such as X-Files or Fringe)

As to weather, it's wet and miserable around here.

I voted for His Dark Materials, because it's awesome, but I think my true favorite was Sabrial/Lireal/Abhorsen by Garth Nix. It's fantastic, and his book _Shade's Children_ is even better (and probably the darkest "youth fiction" book I've ever read).

Also, I never voted for Fringe (because honestly, Firefly and Buffy take precendence over Fringe and Olivia), but I want to just say that I'm really loving it right now. It's the only show I'm watching at the moment with my limited time.

You know it's been a f$%&ing cold winter when you walk outside and go, "Oh man this is awesome! It's so warm! I'm taking my coat off!" and then find out later that it was 25 degrees. :)

Thanks for the Rec. Hadn't heard of those novels before. Will have to check them out.

Know what you mean. Today - I felt hot out with my coat, sweater, etc - even though it was 26 degrees.

For SciFi films, I'd have trouble deciding between Galaxy Quest and The Fifth Element, but since neither were on your list, I don't have to!

7 of the SciFi TV shows you list could all be my favorite, though! And virtually all of the heroines. Decisive, I am not.

Continue with your poll fun. Though a behind-the-cut would be nice.

Fav Sci-Fi film would be The Matrix.

Fav Supernatural/Horror would not be BtVS for me because I don't really think of the show as primarily horror although of course it draws on those elements. Now, Supernatural, that's horror.

Fav female normally would be Buffy, but I've been a big fan of Anna Torv since she first appeared on Fringe and became even more so when I read fan comments dissing her. (Clueless dolts...) I'm delighted to read that after this season, a great many more people have seen the light, as it were.

Note-- I normally never comment on typos in your posts because I'm aware how fast you write these up, but I will mention that her last name is spelled "Le Guin", and you always spell it "Le Quinn". Sorry, serious fan here.

"The Dispossessed" and "The Left Hand Of Darkness" should be required reading for any SF fan as far as I'm concerned, although I wouldn't necessarily consider either of those titles to be "young adult" material.

I know, I know, for some reason I can't get Ursula's last name right. It sounds like Le Quinn in my head so I spell it that way. But if it comes as any consolation - she's not the only one I do this with. Very bad at names. The only one's I get right are the one's I spell all the time.

Add on answers: Babylon 5 will always be my favorite scifi show, but honorable mentions go to Caprica, Misfits and Firefly and Doctor Who.

Buffy seems kinda the obvious answer to the supernatural show question so I want to mention Being Human too.

Tamora Pierce "Song of the Lioness" is still my favorite YA book, as sarahtales recently but it: It just puts no limits on the awesome.

I find that with the sci fi question I'm really missing asian films, my favorite is 20th century boys (it's a three part epic sci fi triology made from a long running comic book).

Cop shows: LoM is best but The Closer is brilliant!

Best female hero: Honorable mentions to Veronica Mars, River Song,Sarah Jane Smith and President Roselyn. Also missing from the list are Lacy Rand from Caprica and Susan Ivanova from B5.

Male: I was sure Spike was getting lots of votes so I gave mine to G'Kar. It's actually equally split between him and Londo though.

Almost put Londo down instead of G'Kar (but I was running out of room and G'Kar is admittedly my favorite from Bab 5 - with
Londo and the Security Chief (whose name I always forget) tied in second.) I did include a few people from shows I've never watched though.

Best female hero: Honorable mentions to Veronica Mars, River Song,Sarah Jane Smith and President Roselyn. Also missing from the list are Lacy Rand from Caprica and Susan Ivanova from B5.

Yeah, not enough options - I'm afraid. And for some reason I can never remember Susan Ivanova's name - even though she was my favorite female character on Bab 5.

Tamora Pierce "Song of the Lioness" is still my favorite YA book, as sarahtales recently but it: It just puts no limits on the awesome.

Haven't hear of that book before. Thanks for the Rec. Will have to check it out.

I still think it's a brilliant series, but I read it when I was twelve and it was one of the biggest fiction loves of my childhood and the very first book I read (and I had read a lot of books by the time I was twelve) where I could identify with a girl.

Tamora Pierce virtually invented the Mary Sue in these books (red hair and purple eyes? That's where they come from) but Alanna still kicks ass in my mind.

Best Cop/Procedural Show that you'd rec on tv or DVD?

I'm not saying this is the best but I am enjoying Detroit 1-8-7 and not just because it's filmed locally.

I don't want to quibble, but I'm very surprised that you put Dune in a Children/Young adult category book. Is it because of the science fiction genre?

Frank Herbert's books are quite complex given his writing and the concepts they are based on. I don't think he ever thought he was writing for young readers!

So if you don't mind my asking...I know what children books are but what's the difference between Adult books and Young adult books?

Date: 2011-01-26 06:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shadowkat67.livejournal.com
Oh, it was based on the books I actually read as a kid (ie - favorite book you read as a kid).

I read Frank Herbert's Dune series when I was 14-15 years of age. Actually most of the people I knew read it at that age. Read Lord of the Rings in the Sixth Grade. And Stendhal's Red and the Black in the 8th Grade. CS Lewis - Fifth Grade.

Since I neither have kids or teach or handle them, I go by what I read as a kid as an indicator.

I define Young Adult/Adolescent as between the ages of 14-17 (includes Middle School and High School). Pre-Adolescent 8-14, and Child - 6-8.

I think it's very hard to categorize books...because so many people don't really tend to read age appropriate books. I know that I didn't.

From: [identity profile] frenchani.livejournal.com
I see how you made your poll now.

I read Dune as I was quite young too (13), but I also started reading Borges at that age and other classics (including Lady Chatterley's lover!) but I wouldn't say it's Young Adult literature!

To me there are children books that are for kids because they are "easier to read" in terms of syntax, vocabulary and topics, and the rest of books just belongs to literature.

That category of Young Adult Literature seems really weird to me, although they seem to be more and more books nowadays that typically aim at teenage readers indeed. I think it's a marketing thing and it is rather recent...but so is the notion of "adolescence" after all. And I'm sure there are sociologists working on that phenomenon of Young Adult Books!

Another question could be what is an age appropriate books?
What are the criteria?

Not really sure to be honest. I keep asking my brother and he never really gives me an answer regarding my niece.

My parents who both had wildly eclectic tastes were fairly laid-back about it - obviously. They just wanted me to read.

I think violence and sexual situations probably should be reserved for post tween or high-school. Slaughter-House 5 for example is too old for the pre-teen set. High school kids can handle and often do read adult novels.

I read everything. At 15 - I read Rosemary Rodgers who basically makes Lady Chatterly's Lover look rather tame. Rodgers wrote bodice ripper romance novels with graphic sex and quite a bit of violence. Also read Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. (My parents had them.) Tried Erica Jong's Fear of Flying but got incredibly bored.

So...I read a lot of literature and a lot of highly entertaining pulp. LOL!

fruit juice: varies w/the season, currently I want tangerine...

I didn't love the BtVS S8 comics, but on balance I liked them.

Procedural: Dexter (and maybe Burn Notice too)
it is hard to pick one...

Color: white
(I really love all colors, but I wear a lot of white)

Favorite Male in Sci-fi : Data, or if he isn't male then Mr. Spock....
I really really have trouble picking just one! I love so many.

I'm glad it is never necessary to pick just one!

Date: 2011-01-27 12:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shadowkat67.livejournal.com
Hee - you know White is technically the absence of color, right?
(although I did put black up there - but I decided to make it you have to combine all colors together...)

didn't love the BtVS S8 comics, but on balance I liked them.

I figured that. ;-)

Flist - the portion that reads and posts on the comics, is basically split down the middle. Half hates with a holy passion or merely dislikes and half loves or likes. Poll isn't really going to show that - because I doubt all of them will take it.

Well certainly to a water colorist, like your self, white is the absence of color, but if you are painting in oils or acrylic then you definitely need enormous tubes of white paint....
and if you are dealing in light (as apposed to pigment) then white is all colors
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visible_spectrum
and black is the absence of light....
I know it sounds like nit picking, but I've always used more flake white than all other colors put together when painting.

Date: 2011-01-27 02:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shadowkat67.livejournal.com
But that doesn't make it a color, does it? Eh, it's a question of semantics I suppose. I've had these arguments with my brother and they've gone on for hours. LOL!

Anyhow, just explaining why I chose not to put it in the poll. ;-)
